Historia
A powerful, moving memoir - and a practical guide to healing - written by Dr. Edith Eva Eger, an eminent psychologist whose own experiences as a Holocaust survivor help her treat patients and allow them to escape the prisons of their own minds. The Choice weaves Eger's personal story with case studies from her work as a psychologist. Her patients and their stories illustrate different phases of healing and show how people can choose to escape the prisons they construct in their minds and find freedom, regardless of circumstance.

A true gift to the world
Revisado: 07-24-23
This book has me speechless. Everything I have wanted and needed to hear to accept myself, my past, my choices, and my future, is in this beautiful work. It is absolutely incredible. A pathway to freedom from fear and victimhood. Dr. Eger includes stories and lessons that span her entire life, including but far beyond the the holocaust. The narration is excellent too—performed with the passion and sincerity that is usually only possible when an author narrates their own work. A must read/listen for anyone and everyone. Thank you, Dr. Eger.

Historia
Glucose, or blood sugar, is a tiny molecule in our body that has a huge impact on our health. It enters our bloodstream through the starchy or sweet foods we eat. Ninety percent of us suffer from too much glucose in our system—and most of us don’t know it. The symptoms? Cravings, fatigue, infertility, hormonal issues, acne, wrinkles. Drawing on cutting-edge science and her own pioneering research, biochemist Jessie Inchauspé offers ten simple, surprising hacks to help you balance your glucose levels and reverse your symptoms—without going on a diet or giving up the foods you love.

Excellent book. Easy for lay people like me to understand.
Revisado: 06-27-23
This book is extremely helpful. The hacks are backed up by science. I am not in medicine or the science field, but the science is communicated in a way that is incredibly easy to comprehend. As someone who needs to be on a lower carb diet, but find keto and other strict diets to be unsustainable, I can’t wait to implement the hacks going forward. Also, I am so glad the author narrates the book; it makes such a difference! She has a charming yet authoritative voice. Highly recommended!

Historia
Most people want to avoid thinking about death, but Caitlin Doughty - a 20-something with a degree in medieval history and a flair for the macabre - took a job at a crematory, turning morbid curiosity into her life’s work. With an original voice that combines fearless curiosity and mordant wit, Caitlin tells an unusual coming-of-age story full of bizarre encounters, gallows humor, and vivid characters (both living and very dead).

Bingeworthy
Revisado: 06-19-23
I absolutely LOVED this book. It was the first book in a long time that I could not "put down." I finished the audiobook in two days, in between work hours. What I expected was a memoir of a mortician, but this book was so much more than that--woven throughout her story are bits and pieces of history and anthropology. Caitlin Doughty is both very intelligent and a brilliant, poetic, writer. I am so glad she narrates her own books too. I will definitely read/listen to this one again. I can't wait to read her other books.

Historia
In Push Off from Here, McKowen delves deeply into each of her nine points: what they mean, how they work, and how every person can live them. She addresses topics such as the correlation between trauma and addiction, the importance of radical honesty, letting go of the illusion of control, the value of community, a reminder that healing is a continual process, and that the process is a gift. Whether you’re just starting out or have been sober for decades, McKowen instructs us to be kind to ourselves: Change is messy and progress is rarely linear, but we can always push off from here.

Wise, vulnerable, and beautiful
Revisado: 03-18-23
I loved We are the Luckiest and Push Off from Here was next level. McKowen has more sobriety now and the wisdom and maturity of her recovery shines through. What I love about this book is that it fills in the gaps that my 12 Step program leaves out, such as discussing the mourning process of losing our substance of choice, and questions not addressed by our regular inventories. There are so many nuggets of wisdom that I binged the audiobook, finishing it within just a few days, and will be listening to it again and again. Thank you for sharing your recovery with us, Laura!

But now, instead of being talked about, Jessica is doing the talking. Her audiobook shares the wisdom and inspirations she’s learned and shows the real woman behind all the pop-culture clichés. Open Book is an opportunity to laugh and cry with a close friend, one that will inspire you to live your best, most authentic life, now that she is finally living hers.

Vulnerable, raw, and inspiring
Revisado: 06-05-22
I have so much respect for Jessica Simpson after listening to this book. She was part of the "soundtrack" of my youth, as we are about the same age, but I had no idea we had so much in common. Jessica's transparency about her childhood experiences gave me chills. I will forever be grateful to her for sharing her story as I can have peace now, knowing I am not alone. And her substance abuse unfolded in a way so many of us can relate to as well. But what I most respect about Jessica is her willingness to stand up after every fall, to stay in game after every fumble--most poignantly after repeated public humiliation, including in front of heads of state. Her tenancy and faith are unmatched.

Historia
At the end of 2017, feeling burnt out and broken, Emma decided to go on a year-long quest for inner peace - from the comfort of her own home. She tried all sorts of spiritual practices in a bid to derive more meaning from life. The result was a year that changed everything. A year that turned frantic chaos into life in the slow lane. A year of magic and moonlight and pink sky sunrises. A year fragranced with incense and burning herbs (that sometimes smelled suspiciously illegal).

Well narrated; a fun read
Revisado: 11-22-21
This was a fun book and the author’s narration is beautifully done. I enjoyed the author’s often poetic prose and I thought the ending was well done; a great wrap up. I also appreciated the author’s authenticity in the epilogue. Deducting stars because the mention of politics and politically trigger phrases on several occasions was a huge turn off. In the first half of the book, there were at least three references to cultural appropriation. Not only did this “take the fun out of it,” but it is self-contradictory because literally all of the practices mentioned are appropriated from another culture. Once I got over that, I was greeted by the author’s slamming of American politics toward the end of the book. I did not expect this when I chose to purchase the book. I was looking for spiritual inspiration. Political commentary detracted from, and in my opinion, undermined an otherwise good book.

The perfect balance of science and action steps
Revisado: 07-27-21
First, I am so grateful that Dr. Ramsey narrated his book. Narration by the author makes a world of difference. Dr. Ramsey provides just the right amount of science to substantiate his recommendations, in a straightforward, easy-to-understand way. I love the stories and examples he provides from his own life and patients as they made the book personal and authentic. The reason I stumbled upon this book in the first place is that after a few weeks of eating primarily whole, unprocessed foods, I noticed my chronic “blue mood” significantly improved. This was a huge awakening for me, especially given that I’ve been on and off antidepressants for my entire adult life. This book confirmed that food really is medicine. It gave me all the information and direction I need to up the ante and take this journey of eating to feel better to the next level.

Probably the best book on courage I have read (and I have read a lot). I am so happy the author narrated the book herself. It always makes a world of difference when a book is read by its author. And this author has an amazing Australian accent to boot!

Poetic, powerful and authentic
Revisado: 09-21-18
Poetic, powerful and authentic. As an evangelical adherent to 12-step recovery, I was initially afraid Brand would renounce the core principles of the 12 steps like so many high profile recovering addicts do. Instead, he embraces the orthodoxy behind them and gives them credit where credit is due. He has the wisdom of an AA/NA “old-timer” and I am so grateful he waited to write this book until he attained long-term recovery. His perspective on the steps enhanced my own understanding of them. I love that it is self-narrated. Highly recommended for any 12-Stepper or “normie” who wants to learn about them.
