D.J. Molles has really forced his way into my top five favorite authors in the last few years. Not only can he create an engaging world, but he has a gripping ability to put the reader into the tense action built within his work. The Purge of District 89 is perhaps his most action-packed tale yet.

Aside from telling a good story, Molles can really write. I often found myself surprised by the depth of his comparisons and analogies when viewing events through the eyes of his characters. If I had one criticism, it would be to ask him to delve deeper into his characters and their backstories. Molles creates characters that are very believable and already demonstrates the ability to make you like or dislike them. It's clear that he could push that ability further and have the reader love or hate the characters.

This book was a great read. I'm eagerly anticipating more in this series.

This book is a very interesting read offering insights into events that I saw unfold from a much more innocent perspective when I was a child. This book spurred me to look deeper into the events surrounding Waco, and the facts do not paint a pretty picture of our government. While I will never agree with the way of life these folks chose, it does not appear that they were bothering anyone else, and to say that they got a raw deal from government agencies is understatement in the extreme.

Some of this book will anger you, all of it will interest you.

I liked this book far more than I thought I would. Hofstetter narrates his own material, which definitely lends to the feeling of the book. I'll look for more from Steve Hofstetter; my only detraction of this book is that I wanted more. That's the sign of an enjoyable experience. I also dropped the author an email to let him know that I enjoyed the book...he got back to me within 24 hours to thank me. I didn't expect a response, and thoroughly appreciate the contact. Hoping Steve has a few more books in him, and the time to narrate them himself.

There's simply no story here. I'm getting the feeling that Bourne's "Day by Day Armageddon" was a fluke, which is sad because it was so good and I want to hold a torch that the author has another round of that level of story in him. This is the second book in the Tomorrow War series, and it is as uninspired as the first. One might say that the tale is riddled with plot holes, but that would be inaccurate. There is simply no plot. The book just meanders until the author either gets bored, finishes his contractual obligation for word count, or finishes heating up his burrito in the microwave...dunno, but the setup for the ending comes about in one page and then the book just coughs to an end.

The main character asks about a resistance group and is told that they are impossible to find. Ten minutes later, he is having coffee with them. The protagonist says that he will start shooting anyone riding a motorcycle because the bikers are always bad guys. Ten minutes later, he's riding a stolen motorcycle as if no one else has come to the same conclusion.

The narration is good.

Avoid this book.

Eames blends the nostalgic idea of getting the band back together perfectly with a sword and sorcery tale. So many sly music references without any heavyhanded forcing. As an aging musician myself, I found myself grinning very frequently at names and concepts presented in the story. Listeners who are not musicians do not suffer for a lack of familiarity, either. The story is just that well done.

Jeff Harding's narration is great, really bringing to life the grizzled main character and the world that Eames builds. I spent the credit on this one solely based on some positive reviews, and I couldn't be happier with the result. I am solidly a new fan, and will be looking forward to anything else Nicholas Eames has to offer. I will also be looking for other titles Harding narrates.

Great narration - weak stories

The selection of readers for this production is great. I was enthralled to hear how each reader would treat the material. While they are all good, a special commendation should be noted for Ice T, who killed it despite sword and sorcery fantasy literature not having been part of his former wheelhouse. I hope he narrates more in the future.

As much fun as it was to hear this first rate group of narrators, the short stories are pretty weak. While I'm tempted to say that I just might have moved on from the iconic Drizzt, I don't feel that this is the case. These are just shorts that seem like they are filler; stories written because the author was offered a paycheck for a few thousand words. Salvatore, of course, has every right to make bank for the creation of one of the genre's standout characters, but that doesn't mean that the tales are going to be great. The majority of the stories just seem to be tired belaborings of the same philosophical rhetoric that has been covered again and again in the Drizzt stories. Appearances aren't everything.

Audlible should be praised for making this production happen, though, and I hope that this is the beginning of a trend that may continue. The narrator of an audiobook is as important as the story itself, and Audible continues to look for interesting ways to present material.

I stopped listening with about an hour left and just could not bring myself to care enough to finish. The story is well-performed by Stephen R. Thorne, but it just a collection of weird experiences with holes everywhere in its premise. The best comparison to reading this book would be if you were the designated driver for a group of your dumbest friends and you had to listen to them piece together and "awesome and hip" story. Not annoying enough to return for a credit, but I really wish I hadn't bought it.

Another really good book from Molles, and I can understand why he leaves the main character how he does, but one gets the feeling that the author simply got tired of his character and world. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the book, but felt as if there were many threads left unfinished and unexplored.

EDIT: Molles is now releasing the "Lee Harden" series which will likely address the loose ends from his "The Remaining" series. Get the popcorn ready and settle in for more of a great ride!

In all it's gritty glory, this is a Mountain Man tale. I was glad to see this on Audible and hope Keith C. Blackmore has some other Mountain Man tales lurking around his notebook or hard drive.

I'm not usually a fan of short stories. The author explains that he grew up being a fan of the format during his forward. He must have learned some great lessons from those short stories of his childhood; this collection is great.
