Historia
In the middle of the holidays, a biological attack wreaks havoc on the U.S. The virus is quick. Deadly. Unstoppable. The country is left in tatters. For Isaac Race, it’s especially bitter. After the death of his parents and sister, he was just getting his life back on track - the weaponized virus changes all that. Battered by the fresh deaths of his foster parents, but hardened by the year he’s endured, he emerges from the temporary safety of his home to seek out other survivors during the worst winter in years.

Word of warning
Revisado: 04-23-25
This is a young adult story set. It’s not bad for what it is but if teenage feelings and discoveries in a PG-13 context are not what you’re after (I definitely wasn’t expecting it), then you should probably look elsewhere.

Historia
Preble Jefferson can see five seconds into the future. Otherwise, he lives an ordinary life. But when a confrontation with a cop on a New York City subway goes tragically wrong, those seconds give Preble the chance to dodge a bullet, causing another man to die in his place. Government agencies become aware of Preble's gift, a manhunt ensues, and their ambitions shift from law enforcement to military R&D. Preble will do whatever it takes to protect his family, but as events spiral out of control, he must weigh the cost of his gift against the loss of his humanity.

Absurd
Revisado: 02-10-25
Without giving away much, the story starts fairly dynamic and logical, quickly degenerating into insane mix of ridiculously over the top action, anarchism, conspiracy theories, neuroscience and anything else you can think of. Neither subject is well-thought out and merely seems to be just a filler for time. The further it gets, less believable anything becomes and at times it almost feels as if someone narrated a comics book. I know it won some awards; I fail to recognize for what.

Hugh Howey is known for crafting riveting and immersive tales of boundless imagination. Now comes Machine Learning, an impressive collection of Howey's science fiction and fantasy short fiction, including three stories set in the world of Wool, two never-before-published tales written exclusively for this volume, and 15 additional stories collected here for the first time. These stories explore everything from artificial intelligence to parallel universes to video games, and each story is accompanied by an author's note.

Not what I hoped it would be
Revisado: 12-19-24
Generally a fan of Howie, I enjoyed the preface more than the stories themselves. They’re fairly short and PG-13ish in a way that you feel like it was something written for middle schoolers. Also not a fan of author’s post-story commentary after each little piece - we are old enough where we can make our own determinations and often times the author’s reminiscing will kind of ruin the story for you.

Historia
Fetter was raised to kill, honed as a knife to cut down his sainted father. This gave him plenty to talk about in therapy. He walked among invisible powers: devils and anti-gods that mock the mortal form. He learned a lethal catechism, lost his shadow, and gained a habit for secrecy. After a blood-soaked childhood, Fetter escaped his rural hometown for the big city, and fell into a broader world where divine destinies are a dime a dozen.

Just couldn’t get into it
Revisado: 12-19-24
Made it to about a half point. The story seems to have a promise of something new and unusual but it’s droning on and on to the point where you don’t even remember what was the point of it all. Wanted to like it but just couldn’t get through it.

Not bad but clearly tired
Revisado: 04-12-24
This is still your typical excellent Winslow but it’s clear that the story has gone a bit too long in a tooth. Majority of the material are the throwbacks to the past events. Very little fresh new developments and those that make an appearance are cliche’d and predictable as it gets. Sugary sweet ending ruins the trilogy, in my opinion, but overall an entertaining enough listen where you can just turn it on and use it as a background and not miss much.

Historia
Jane Pool likes her safe, suburban existence just fine. She has a house, a family, (an infuriating mother-in-law,) and a quiet-if-unfulfilling administrative job at the local college. Everything is wonderfully, numbingly normal. Yet Jane remains haunted by her past: her mercurial, absent mother, her parents’ secrets, and the act of violence that transformed her life.

Strong start, lackluster finish
Revisado: 04-04-24
Not really a thriller, not exactly a fiction in a strict sense of the word. Starts interesting and dynamic, bogs down half way through and comes to a predictable and somewhat boring end. Not exactly a waste of time but would not something I’d buy in a paper form a re-read later.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Dynamic, well written, keeps you engaged and does not succumb to common stereotypes associated with describing rural folks. Never conferencing or overly protective of its characters. Great read.

Very Cormack McCarthy I’m a way it doesn’t pull any punches yet retains philosophical, almost meditative side to it that is often lost in modern day works of literature. A true treasure!
