love Philippa, don't love this book
Revisado: 05-01-21
I LOVE Philippa Gregory. my favorite author of all time, however, this is my least favorite of her "Tudor" books. idk why, maybe because lady Salsbarry is so unlikable or or there just isn't enough interesting subject matter but I cannot get lost in this story in the same way I do all of her other books

the narrorator is DREADFUL! I got to chapter 3 and I just couldn't take it anymore. his voices for the ladies, one sounds like a 90 year old smoker and the other just sounds like a man doing a woman's voice incredibly unconvincingly... his style of reading is just quick and passive and doesn't flow with the different moods of each scene.... so painful to listen to....

Historia
America in 2105 is beset with mass inequality, poverty, and increasingly large numbers of the poor. A fractured and divided America ushers in an authoritarian government that promises to solve all these problems in one stroke with a radical solution. Welcome to the CRAS: the Child Redistribution Adoption System. It is the bane of 19-year-old Robin Sylvone's existence. Under the system, millions of poor families have their children taken and given to the rich. As a single teen mother, Robin fell within the scope of the scheme and lost her baby two years ago.

I thought the story sounded interesting. something good and light to listen to on a drive. The writing style is super immature and I feel like it is something I would have written in 10th grads. The narrator is good, I thinlk.... I don't like her but it might just be the copy she is performing.

Historia
New York Times best-selling author Philippa Gregory presents a new and unique view of one of history's most intriguing, romantic, and maddening heroines. Biographers often neglect the captive years of Mary Queen of Scots, who trusted Queen Elizabeth's promise of sanctuary when she fled from rebels in Scotland and then found herself imprisoned as the "guest" of George Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury and his indomitable wife, Bess of Hardwick.

narrorators are painful!
Revisado: 04-02-18
I used to own this book on either ITunes or CD can't remember which, but it has different, much better, narrators. I loved this book, it was fantastic but oh my gosh, these people are TERRIBLE! The woman voicing Mary Queen of Scots is good and does an excellent, but the last one has a French accent which was nice. the other two are so bad I returned the book after 30 minutes of listening. why they even have it recorded more than once by different voice actors is beyond me.... sad....

Terrible Narrator
Revisado: 12-25-17
I returned this book because the narrator was terrible. her performance is stilted, choppy and monotone. There is little difference between the voices of different characters I could have read this book better and I can't read out loud worth beans.

She also discusses life's everyday trials, like the horrors of attempting a crafts project, the anxieties of being a houseguest, and the ever-changing rules of recycling.

Nonsense
Revisado: 07-02-17
Was excited about this book, heard about it on NPR and the interview made it seem promising. It was spastic and nonsensical and what the heck was the Elmer Fud bit?!?! Terrible. Listened for 3 hours just waiting for it to get good, never happened.

Historia
Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in "The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas". As her family lay dying, little Libby fled their tiny farmhouse into the freezing January snow. She lost some fingers and toes, but she survived, and famously testified that her 15-year-old brother, Ben, was the killer. Twenty-five years later, Ben sits in prison, and troubled Libby lives off the dregs of a trust created by well-wishers who've long forgotten her.

Narration AMAZING.....story not so much (SPOILERS)
Revisado: 07-05-16
The narrators KILLED IT in the best way. A great performance with great character voices, personality etc. It is too bad that the story itself was slow and at some points terribly gruesome! Yikes! I found the characters to be boring and really frustrating. And the worst of all was the ending. It seems SUPER far fetched and like mrs Flynn was trying really hard to add an unexpected twist which just made for an ending that completely comes out of left field, and not in a good way. I LOVED Sharp Objects and Gone Girl! Thought they were interesting, dynamic and intriguing! But this book kept me looking to see how much time I had left and like I said, the ending was trying WAY too hard and it kind of killed the book for me. Will read others by this author but this one is not going to hang out in my library they way Gone Girl has.

Historia
A jaw-dropping story of how a girl from the suburbs ends up in a prince's harem and emerges from the secret Xanadu both richer and wiser. At 18, Jillian Lauren was an NYU theater school dropout with a tip about an upcoming audition. The "casting director" told her that a rich businessman would pay pretty girls $20,000 if they stayed for two weeks to spice up his parties. Soon, Jillian was on a plane to Borneo, where she would spend the next 18 months in the harem of Prince Jefri Bolkiah....

Realm liked it
Revisado: 10-14-15
Reading some other reviews I was very skeptical about this book but i was very pleasantly surprised! I don't think she was touting her poor decisions, I think she was just telling people about her life. I enjoyed the performance and the writing as well.
