Historia
Belgian detective Hercule Poirot is summoned to France after receiving a distressing letter with a urgent cry for help. Upon his arrival in Merlinville-sur-Mer, the investigator finds the man who penned the letter, the South American millionaire Monsieur Renauld, stabbed to death and his body flung into a freshly dug open grave on the golf course adjoining the property. Meanwhile the millionaire's wife is found bound and gagged in her room. Apparently, it seems that Renauld and his wife were victims of a failed break-in, resulting in Renauld's kidnapping and death.

Excellent and enjoyable!
Revisado: 10-06-21
Although I am a big fan of Sherlock Holmes, I haven't read a lot of Agatha Christie's works. I found that this book, with it's Inspector Poirot and his sidekick Hastings gave me hmuch the same pleasure as my old friend Holmes and Dr. Watson have through the years. Christie has woven an intricate plot that kept me guessing right up until the end. The narration was top notch as well.

An old favorite, given new life.
Revisado: 06-24-21
The Call of the Wild has a special place in my heart, as it was the first grown-up novel that I ever read as a young man. It kicked off my love of reading. I'm in my sixties now, and this is the first time I have revisited it. it was both familiar and new, especially as it was so expertly read. It reminded me of why I loved it and its genre so much all those years ago. it was my first glimpse of how reading can open a window to a whole new world.

Through decades of music by one of the best-selling musicians of all time, who created classics like "Fire and Rain" and "Carolina in My Mind", James Taylor has doled out his history in the poetry of his work. Taylor says his early life is, "the source of many of my songs", and Break Shot is a tour of his first 21 years in rich, new detail.

Revealing.
Revisado: 02-12-21
James Taylor's music has always resonated with me, but I have known next to nothing about him as a person. I found this honest and candid look into his life intriguing. Taylor and I have had life experiences that are pretty much polar opposites, yet somehow listening to these reminiscences of his early life made me feel like I just spent an evening talking with an old friend. I just wish I could spend a few more such evenings with him, especially if he brought his guitar along.

Eye-opening.
Revisado: 06-27-20
I have been aware of this book since air was a teenager in the 70's. it's been in my Audible library for quite a long time. What finally compelled me to give it a listen is the recent wave of rioting in wake of the killing of George Floyd. While I detest the treatment that Floyd had received at the hands of some vicious and dishonorable policemen, I confess that I was nevertheless perplexed at the level and scope of outrage that was touched off by this event. Perhaps I had deluded myself into thinking that we had made greater strides in racial equality in this country than we had.
I found Black Like Me to be an engaging and enjoyable read. I was frequently touched by the sincerity and tenderness in Griffin's descriptions of the plight of the black people he encountered during his experiment. What impacted me more was his analysis in the latter part of the book. I read this book in order to gain more understanding of the roots of racial unrest in our country, and that I did. What was unexpected is what I learned about myself. Griffin turned a bright and at times uncomfortable spotlight on my own conceptions (and sometimes misconceptions) about race in ways that surprised me. While I still do not approve of the recent violence, destruction, and looting, I also see that the "powderkegs" that Griffin described in the black communities of his day, which had as their origins a long history of discrimination and abuse, are apparently still smoldering today. I believe racism is a two way street, but we all still have work to do. I am grateful for this newfound perspective.

Revisado: 12-24-18
I have never watched Fixer Upper, and I knew almost nothing about Chip and Joanna Gaines. I bought this book on the strength of the reviews. I was not disappointed. On the contrary, I found it to be one of my alltime favorite listens on Audible. Chip's sincerity is palpable, as is his desire to give practical advice to anyone who is trying to make their way in life, and make a positive difference in the world. I have recommended it to my kids.

A Book that Made Me a Better Person
- De Jeff Diamond en 03-29-13
Amazing!
Revisado: 10-20-18
None of the theatrical performances of this work do it justice. Even the abridged versions of the book sacrifice too much in the name of brevity and readability. In my view, one must read at least the chapter on the Bishop, in order to fully appreciate the deeper meaning of Jean Valjean's character. I admit that there are parts of this book that are tough sledding to get through, but then there other parts mixed in that are deeply moving and thought provoking.
I have always enjoyed Guidall's narration, but I was skeptical about how it would play in this story. Looking back, it is hard to imagine it being read as well, and with as much feeling by anyone else. Bravo George!

Julius Caesar is one of Shakespeare’s most compelling Roman plays. The plot against Caesar and the infamous assassination scene make for unforgettable listening. Brutus, the true protagonist of the play, is mesmerizing in his psychological state of anguish, forced to choose between the bonds of friendship and his desire for patriotic justice.

Historia
On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

Great story telling.
Revisado: 02-24-18
I enjoyed the plot and character development, and it was a fun twist on time travel. The narrator is quiet talented, and added a great deal.
My biggest reservation is the language, which is very course, including many f-bombs. I am not a prude, but I object to the usual defense regarding such copious use of crude language: that is a reflection of, and portrayal of the real world. It certainly does not reflect the world I live in, nor does it sound like the people that I associate with. I wish authors would seek better ways to create a sense of authenticity.

Great adventures and fun on land and sea!
Revisado: 01-23-18
It boggles my mind how someone who is so contemporary as O'Brian can write with a voice that is so true to the period, especially given the fact that sailing tall ships is essentially a lost art. I am also impressed at the scope of topics that he tackles, from sailing to music, to matters of the heart. Tull's narration is spot on, and adds so much to the joy of "reading" these Aubrey-Maturin books.
