Overall I liked the story but the background music overall ruined the experience. i found it unnecessary and highly distracting, and it didn't change regardless of the tone of the prose and plot.

Enjoyable and Insightful

McConaughey has a fantastic voice for speaking and writing, and an earnest perspective that feels unique despite coming from a package that has little reason to be so. His description of Austin (or that of his brother's) is one that I had to stop and write down. His adventure through Mali caused me to reflect on how many times I've looked for reasons to say no. All of his adventures and stories, even if you can't directly relate to the physical experience, have a solid handful of the shifting sands of modern life. You don't have to agree or understand with his opinions or choices, but you can at least enjoy the ride.

Really enjoyed this BUT...

Overall very enjoyable twist on the murder mystery and sci-fi/fantasy genres but real issues with the author's world building. You get the impression that this is a space age post-apocalyptic magic/science fiction, happening thousands of years in the future. So how is it that the main character is referencing things like dressage? You can't convince me that the Ninth included that in her education, nor do I believe that horses are a regular mode of transportation or recreation for any of the houses. Furthermore, how is it that they're using swords (and rapiers) of all things when they have access to space ships? I could go on further, but bottom line is that despite my many issues with the foundations of this universe and the plot holes, the characters were enjoyable and dynamic, the action well-written, and I will be picking up the sequel.

slightly disjointed storytelling, but what a story. can't believe I'd never heard of SSgt Reckless before. Might accept a duty station to Pendleton just to go see her memorial and grave. Semper Fi
