Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

So Disappointed in the Narration of Jean Brassard
Revisado: 12-04-24
I was unable to get very far into the story, and I LOVE this series. I've had the audio preordered for months, and was unaware there would be a new narrator. In my opinion, Mr. Brassard is not able to capture the "voices" of the characters very well. They all have a specific cadence and rhythm, in addition to their sound -- he is not true to any of this. It was very difficult to discern which character was speaking, making it hard to follow the story and paint the mind pictures that have been so easy with our previous 2 narrators. I will carve out time to read this one, rather than listen, because I don't want to miss the story, but I fervently hope Ms. Penny will invite Robert Bathurst to narrate for us again with the next book, so we're able to listen and enjoy once more.

Historia
Anne Gallagher grew up enchanted by her grandfather’s stories of Ireland. Heartbroken at his death, she travels to his childhood home to spread his ashes. There, overcome with memories of the man she adored and consumed by a history she never knew, she is pulled into another time. The Ireland of 1921, teetering on the edge of war, is a dangerous place in which to awaken. But there Anne finds herself, hurt, disoriented, and under the care of Dr. Thomas Smith, guardian to a young boy who is oddly familiar.

Oh My Goodness...!!
Revisado: 03-06-24
I purchased this when I had several extra credits, finding the premise to be something I might enjoy. It's been sitting in my library for WAY too long, and when I chose it, I had no idea just how much I would love it. The beautiful, reality suspending story, the history, the narration -- all so fabulous. Part of the reason I chose this book was the narration of Saskia Maarleveld, which I had enjoyed from another selection. She didn't disappoint, nor did Will Damron - they were both riveting in their delivery. I know the narration plays a big part in the enjoyment of a story, but had I read this rather than listening, I would still have been entranced by the evocative prose, and the lovely way things were woven together. I will be looking for more stories by Amy Harmon, and more narration by Saskia and Will - either together or separately. You'll not be disappointed in the time you spend, getting lost in the lives of Thomas and Anne.

Historia
It’s spring and Three Pines is reemerging after the harsh winter. But not everything buried should come alive again. Not everything lying dormant should reemerge. But something has. As the villagers prepare for a special celebration, Armand Gamache and Jean-Guy Beauvoir find themselves increasingly worried. A young man and woman have reappeared in the Sûreté du Québec investigators’ lives after many years. The two were young children when their troubled mother was murdered, leaving them damaged, shattered. Now they’ve arrived in the village of Three Pines. But to what end?

Another Fabulous Installment!!
Revisado: 08-14-23
I preordered this book, I downloaded it when it became available to me, and then I hoarded it. I was loath to begin, because I would, after being unable to "put it down", have to wait for the next book. It was all I hoped for, and then some. This series captured my heart-- so well written, with deep character depth and well drawn plots. I feel as though these people are my friends, and I'd like to visit them in Three Pines. Bravo Louise Penny!!

Historia
August 1939: London is dismal under the weight of impending war with Germany as Hitler’s forces continue to sweep across Europe. Into this uncertain maelstrom steps Grace Bennett, young and ready for a fresh start in the bustling city streets she’s always dreamed of - and miles away from her troubled past in the countryside. With aspirations of working at a department store, Grace never imagined she’d wind up employed at Primrose Hill, an offbeat bookshop nestled in the heart of the city - after all, she’s never been much of a reader.

Wonderful Story!!
Revisado: 04-24-23
What a delight this book was!! It was heartening to hear of the love of reading coming alive in someone, and how beautifully it was used to forge a bond between people, especially at such a horrific time. The narrator was adept at voicing the different characters, so I was always aware of who was speaking. I will be looking for more like this one, for sure.

Maybe Reading It Would Be Better for Me
Revisado: 04-23-23
I seem to be unable to return this book, though I would do so if I could. I must have had it in my library too long before I decided to give it a "read". I think the story is probably good, as I am a few chapters in now, but it's very hard to follow. I love Lesley Manville, as an actress, but not so much as a narrater. It's hard for me to follow the story, or know which character is talking, if I've left the book for any length of time. As I listen on my way to and from work for the most part, starting and stopping is very much the routine for me. I may try reading it for myself, to see if it's any easier to follow the story that way.

Enchanting!
Revisado: 02-24-23
I so enjoyed the first book in this series, that I wanted to continue the adventures with Jack and Flora! The story is well written, and I really like the narration by Charlie Norfolk. I don't appreciate it when the narrators change mid series, as I've developed an association between voice and character, so was very pleased Charlie has remained the narrator -- Charlie IS Flora for me. I'll be continuing on with the series, and will look for other things by this author.

Wonderful Story...average narrator.
Revisado: 06-10-22
This was such a wonderful journey through the lives, and emotions of the characters within. I was deeply moved, several times, and appreciated the honesty with which the story was told. The narrator, while having a lovely voice, did not do justice to the dialect of the mountain people. That was a bit of a detraction, at times, but still well worth the listen.

Historia
Headstrong and beautiful, the young housemaid Sally Jupp is put rudely in her place, strangled in her bed behind a bolted door. Coolly brilliant policeman Adam Dalgliesh of Scotland Yard must find her killer among a houseful of suspects, most of whom had very good reason to wish her ill. Cover Her Face is P. D. James' electric debut novel, an ingeniously plotted mystery that immediately placed her among the masters of suspense.

Not Interested in More of This Series
Revisado: 12-25-19
I was very excited to try this series, but I think I might like it better as a video, which is unusual for me. I'm sorry to say that I was very disappointed in this and, when I found that I had to talk myself into listening, I just stopped short of the ending by a couple of hours. Also, VERY unusual for me. The story is slow, and I don't care for the narration. She sounds very much the same for all the characters, so it's hard to follow the story if you have to start and stop very much at all.

Historia
A successful LA artist, Roman Velasco appears to have everything he could possibly want - money, women, fame. Only Grace Moore, his reluctant, newly hired personal assistant, knows how little he truly has. The demons of Roman's past seem to echo through the halls of his empty mansion and out across his breathtaking Topanga Canyon view. But Grace doesn't know how her boss secretly wrestles with those demons: by tagging buildings as the Bird, a notorious but unidentified graffiti artist - an alter ego that could destroy his career and land him in prison.

I really love Francine Rivers books, and this one didn't let me down. She has such a way of telling a story and the message she brings is timely, important and real. I would recommend this, and the many others she's written, wholeheartedly. Susan Bennett did a wonderful job performing the story, as well. This is the first Francine Rivers book I've listened to, as opposed to reading, and I hope Susan Bennett will be the performer on more of these.

Historia
Set during the time of the Napoleonic Wars, this classic gives a satirical picture of a worldly society. The novel revolves around the exploits of the impoverished but beautiful and devious Becky Sharp who craves wealth and a position in society. Calculating and determined to succeed, she charms, deceives and manipulates everyone she meets. A novel of early 19th-century English society, it takes its title from the place designated as the centre of human corruption in John Bunyan's 17th-century allegory.
