Historia
Shari Franke’s childhood was a constant battle for survival. Her mother, Ruby Franke, enforced a severe moral code while maintaining a façade of a picture-perfect family for their wildly popular YouTube channel 8 Passengers, which documented the day-to-day life of raising six children for a staggering 2.5 million subscribers. But a darker truth lurked beneath the surface—Ruby’s wholesome online persona masked a more tyrannical parenting style than anyone could have imagined.

When Michael Lewis first met him, Sam Bankman-Fried was the world’s youngest billionaire and crypto’s Gatsby. CEOs, celebrities, and leaders of small countries all vied for his time and cash after he catapulted, practically overnight, onto the Forbes billionaire list. Who was this rumpled guy in cargo shorts and limp white socks, whose eyes twitched across Zoom meetings as he played video games on the side?

When Kristina Kuzmič started to see signs that her otherwise sunny, resilient teenage son was struggling, she was sure a few simple fixes could right the ship. But over the following months, the issues her family faced became more nuanced, complicated, and pervasive than she could've predicted—and what began as a clear to do list spiraled into an emotionally fraught and seemingly endless push and pull between signs of progress and overwhelming fear.

Fantastic
Revisado: 10-23-24
I do not have children, and I did not know/follow Kristina before buying this book, but was drawn in by the high reviews...and wow - what a fantastic book! I am so glad to have read it, as it will be the first thing I give to friends who have a struggling child. So beautifully and vulnerably written with so much helpful wisdom - and Luca's own perspective at the end was the cherry on top! Highly recommend.

Historia
When a state trooper appeared at Rachel Zimmerman’s door to report that her husband had jumped to his death off a nearby bridge, she fell to her knees, unable to fully absorb the news. How could the man she’d married, a devoted father and robotics professor at MIT, have committed such a violent act? How would she explain this to her young daughters? And could she have stopped him? A longtime journalist, she probed obsessively, believing answers would help her survive. She interviewed doctors, suicide researchers, and a man who jumped off the same bridge and lived.

Historia
Growing up in the Hasidic community of Brooklyn’s Borough Park, Sara Glass knew one painful truth: what was expected of her and what she desperately wanted were impossibly opposed. Tormented by her attraction to women and trapped in a loveless arranged marriage, she found herself unable to conform to her religious upbringing and soon, she made the difficult decision to walk away from the world she knew. Sara’s journey to self-acceptance began with the challenging battle for a divorce and custody of her children, an act that left her on the verge of estrangement from her family and community.

Historia
Susan Lieu has long been searching for answers. About her family’s past and about her own future. Refugees from the Vietnam War, Susan’s family escaped to California in the 1980s after five failed attempts. Upon arrival, Susan’s mother was their savvy, charismatic North Star, setting up two successful nail salons and orchestrating every success—until Susan was eleven. That year, her mother died from a botched tummy tuck. After the funeral, no one was ever allowed to talk about her or what had happened.

So glad Lieu brought her family's story to light!
Revisado: 03-20-24
I don't usually purchase a newly-released book until there are a few reviews to go off of, but the cover and description drew me in to Lieu's story. I'm so glad I didn't wait - I LOVE this memoir! What a compelling story with ALL of the feels...I adore Lieu's humor and narration...and wow, such heart to persevere for SO many years in the face of so much resistance to discover who her mom really was and what really happened. I'm so glad you took your mom's advice, Susan, and you did not cover up the story - thank you for sharing it with us!

An entertaining story of a life full of paradox!
Revisado: 02-03-24
I did not expect to like this book as much as I did, and I was really blown away by Crystal's account of everything. She has way more depth than I ever gave her credit for, and I'm so happy to have had my assumptions and misconceptions corrected! Crystal does such a beautiful job of holding the paradox of her experience, of acknowledging both the light and the dark, the complexity of it all. The story was engaging, revealing, and entertaining without being sleazy. Really glad Crystal shared her story!
