Historia
Two branches of the McAllister family lead very different lives on cattle stations in Central Australia. Rob, a stickler for correctness, manages a wealthy, company-owned property while his easygoing brother Sandy struggles to support his wife and son on an impoverished leasehold. When tragedy throws the families together, ultimately driving them even further apart, it's Sandy's young son Jim who suffers the most.

I picked this for the narrator, but really enjoyed the story. If you like Brice Courtenay, you'll probably like this too.

Historia
At just 16 years Danny Dunn has everything going for him: brains, looks, sporting aptitude - and luck with the ladies. His mother steers him towards a university education, but with just six months of his degree to go, he signs up for the AIF, driven by a desire to serve his country and plain wanderlust. Danny serves in South-east Asia, spends three and a half years as a POW, and returns a broken man, embittered and facially disfigured. He is scared and overwhelmed by the need to sort himself out, to find out who the hell he is....

classic Courtenay

I know it's probably a bit formulaic, morally upstanding, handsome good guy, faithful bright woman at his side, but the story is told so well. I don't mind at all. Quirky cast of characters. Love the narrator.

Historia
In the spring of 1939, a top-secret organization was founded in London: Its purpose was to plot the destruction of Hitler's war machine through spectacular acts of sabotage. The guerrilla campaign that followed was every bit as extraordinary as the six men who directed it. One of them, Cecil Clarke, was a maverick engineer who had spent the 1930s inventing futuristic caravans. Now his talents were put to more devious use: He built the dirty bomb used to assassinate Hitler's favorite, Reinhard Heydrich.

An unusual tale of the triump of ingenuity in a time of adversity. If you have any interest in warfare or weaponry, you'll probably like this book. If you don't, you still might. the people and their inventions are almost unbelieveable.

A rich and detailed narrative. The author brings to life the rich world of Bombay, particulaly the rarely discussed slums, through the adventures and misadventures of the "bad guy" protagonist.

A fascinating tale of a time period and parts of the world you don't often hear about. Graphic without being gory when it came to the war and POW scenes. A positive story about the depths of friendships.

Revisado: 05-11-17
if youre looking for high class literature, this probably isn't it. But if you're looking for a well told narrative with excellent narration to pass the time commuting or otherwise, I'd say you've found your book. I really enjoyed it, and I don't typically go in for romance. For those who complained about graphic sexual content, I'd say they must have pretty vivid imaginations, because for the most part there were suggestions, but not descriptions of physical intimacy.

three good books in one
Revisado: 11-12-16
I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed these three overlapping stories. the first two meshed together and we're both enjoyable and instructive in concepts of finance and espionage. it took me so while to get into the third, as it didn't align quite as smoothly as the other two had done, but ultimately it all played out. I think I would have enjoyed each independently as well. I'm quite tempted to start listening get all over again, now that I see how it all ties together.
The author's style and characters remind me a bit of Jeffrey Archer.

beautifully told story of three generations
Revisado: 08-26-16
this is the second book I read by this author. while the setting and plot were very different, it is evident that her talent lies in her ability to develop rich characters in a deeply imagined world. my only hang up was in suspending my disbelief around the fact that with all the interracial relationships, the children always seemed to come out looking white.

Historia
Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.
