Ms. Butler's encyclopedic research and Mr. Guidall's superb reading make this a wonderful Audible experience. Makes me want to read more of her books and other books read by Mr. Guidall.

What made the experience of listening to Village of Secrets the most enjoyable?

Suzanne Toren's outstanding reading of this book made the overall experience of the book far better than could be obtained from the printed page

What about Suzanne Toren’s performance did you like?

Ms. Toren's ability to put feeling into her reading gave the book a depth that the printed word just doesn't have. In addition, as many of the names and places are French, Ms. Toren's apparent knowledge of French and her superb ability to properly pronounce the French words and names made her rendition especially good. In many other books, the reader doesn't take the time to get the correct pronunciation of the proper names, but Ms. Toren did. Without question, this was the best reading of all the many Audible books I have read.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes

Where does The Guns at Last Light rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This ranks high - partly because of its historical importance, but mostly because of Mr. Ganzer, the reader. Unlike many readers, he researched the characters' names enough to know how to pronounce all of them - and his ability with German names made a huge difference in the clarity of the narrative. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

What does L. J. Ganser bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I couldn't possibly pronounce the German names as well as Mr. Ganzer.

What did you love best about The Second World War?

A wonderfully written and thorough history of the War, read magnificently. Sean Barrett not only speaks melodious and extremely clear "English English," but is a master of other European languages as well. When he speaks a German, French or Russian name, he does it in German, French or Russian - adding much to the enjoyment of the listener. The book itself is a continuum of small stories which, in their aggregate, give a total picture of the horrors or WWII. Mr. Beevor calls it like it is - no favoritism whatsover, whether to Ike, Monty, De Gaulle, Stalin, Churchill or Roosevelt. I have read (or listened to) other WWII histories, but none was as exceptional as this one. I give much credit to the reader for holding my attention (even while driving).

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Second World War?

Beevor's description of the Holocaust, although necessarily short, gave one of the best pictures I've read. His blow-by-blow tales of each of the major WWII battles makes you feel like you were there.

What does Sean Barrett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He brings the book to life!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

The film would last days!

If you lived during Eisenhower's time ....

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. If you lived during Eisenhower's time, you've probably forgotten most of the story the book tells -- and it is a story well worth remembering. This book permanently puts to rest the old tale that "Eisenhower proved you don't need a President!!!!" Hearing all the things he accomplished (both in WW II and in his later presidency), you see what a marvelous man he was and how much he really accomplished. You appreciate not only the things he did, but also the things he didn't do!! In my opinion, this book is a must read (or listen to).
