I really wanted to Love the book but..
Revisado: 03-06-19
Let me just get the fact that the narration of the book was decent out of the way. With that said, I will briefly share my opinion.
Okay, we all love Harry Potter ( if you don't, what's wrong with you), and I completely understand not wanting the Harry Potter series to end, but did we really need the African version?
As a Black American ( who has a problem with the word Akata but I digress), I loved the idea of a book written based on African culture. I loved that this book mentioned several different African cultures, good food, the Orisha, JuJu, etc.
What I didn't like is that it was an entire Harry Potter series crammed into one book so I feel there were a lot of missed opportunities. I felt like the author spent a lot of time focusing on certain areas that kinda dragged on whereas sometimes I felt like I wanted more. At times I even feel like I was bouncing around as the flow of the book seemed to be off in some areas.
Also, the letter from her grandmother seemed like it was written to meet some kind of word count quota. I was looking for it to have more substance.
Overall, I think the book is okay. Although there were. Any similarities to Potter, there were still unique components. I will listen to Akata Warrior in hopes that it is better written. I can still appreciate a journey and I'm curious to see where these kids end up next.

She assumes she still has time - until her family arrives on her doorstep with a young woman they introduce as Akin's second wife.

Twists and Turns galore!
Revisado: 11-21-18
This was a Book Club book. I had no idea what I was about to get. I love that "I didn't expect that" feeling! It was a crazy story that I loved! Great job.

Had no clue what I was getting in to.
Revisado: 10-29-18
I purchased this book as it was on my book club roster. It was so moving...captivating. Her story-the realness and emotional narration... I'm a barrel of emotions. I have so many things that I can relate to with "Nikki". I am touched. Thanks for sharing your most intimate self with the world. I pray I will grow from it.
