Historia
"To boldly go where no man has gone before" was a phrase made popular by Gene Rodenberry in a science fiction setting, but it was certainly the creed of countless explorers during the Age of Discovery and afterwards. In fact, as recently as the mid-18th century, a young sailor named James Cook determined to go "farther than any man has been before me, but as far as I think it is possible for a man to go." And unlike so many others who tried, he did just that.

I thought that this book expecting would be an interesting tale of discovery. It wasn't. There were too many references to latitude and longitude for it to be meaningful. Furthermore, the references to the ships and rigging were also redundant and boring. Finally, the coverage of his death was not particularly moving.

Historia
Based on exclusive interviews with justices themselves, The Nine tells the story of the Supreme Court through personalities, from Anthony Kennedy's overwhelming sense of self-importance to Clarence Thomas' well-tended grievances against his critics to David Souter's odd 19th century lifestyle. There is also, for the first time, the full behind-the-scenes story of Bush v. Gore and Sandra Day O'Connor's fateful breach with George W. Bush, the president she helped place in office.

I have enjoyed other books by this author, but this one just did not gel in my mind, so I put it down. No interest. DNF.

Historia
The butcher of the Alamo and Goliad. The traitor who sold half of Mexico. The Napoleon of the West. Mr. Fifteen Nails. The Mother Country's seducer. Almost 150 years after his death, a lot of name-calling is still being directed towards Antonio López de Santa Anna, president of Mexico 11 times in the 19th century, and today, the vast majority of his compatriots consider him the greatest traitor in history.

Useful biography of one of the Mexico's 19th century leaders. He is a controversial person--traitor or hero. Santa Anna's life was full of intrigue, adventure, and controversy. Narrator murdered most of the Spanish words; he should research pronunciation.

Historia
For much of the 20th century, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain's life and career remained mostly obscure outside of dedicated scholars of the Battle of Gettysburg and alumni and students of Bowdoin College. Colonel Chamberlain had led the 20th Maine regiment at Gettysburg, holding the extreme left of the Union line on Little Round Top, and he continued to rise up the ranks toward the end of the war until he was commanding a brigade and present at the surrender ceremony of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox.

Chamberlain is a story worth being told. His contribution at Little Round Top hinged American history. This 2.7 hour work is about twice as long for Charles River Editors usual production. I thought that the background history of the Civil War was unnecessary and added to the length without much purpose.

Historia
Of all the Americans who became renowned for expeditions to the West, few were as famous - or infamous - as John Charles Fremont, whose work produced some of the region’s most detailed maps and propelled him to national fame. Among other things, he taught mathematics to midshipmen on a Navy warship on a long cruise off South America, served as governor of two states and a Senator for one, was court-martialed for insubordination, issued the first emancipation proclamation, and eloped with the daughter of a powerful U.S. Senator.

Historia
In an astonishing feat of empathy and narrative invention, our most ambitious novelist imagines an alternate version of American history. In 1940 Charles A. Lindbergh, heroic aviator and rabid isolationist, is elected president. Shortly thereafter, he negotiates a cordial "understanding" with Adolf Hitler while the new government embarks on a program of folksy anti-Semitism.

Big picture wasn't evident until about two hours to go in the listen. It was obscured by the musings of an 8-year-old kid. who wondered about irrelevant things. I was promised alternative history and got current events. Published first in 2004, it's very relevant today if the reader substitutes "Jewish" for "immigration" and swap Lindbergh for Trump. The plot never consummates; it just dribbles away. I won't bother with this author again. The narration is heavy "Jersey" accent --missing lots of "R" sounds...yugh!

Historia
Nineteenth century Americans were all too happy and eager for the transcontinental railroad to help speed their passage west and render overland paths obsolete. One early trail got its start in Independence, Missouri, one of many cities marked as starting points for pioneers, settlers, or traders. From there, the trail went all the way to Santa Fe, which at that time was part of the newly independent country of Mexico.

Of all the types of books that I read, end of the world novels are grand. The method of storytelling put reality into a doomsday scenario--how it would impact and affect the average person. The characters are believable and that contributes to the book's authenticity. Great read.

Historia
Fought over bitterly cold flecks of rock and tundra scattered across the remote waters marking the boundary between the Bering Sea and the Pacific Ocean, the Aleutian Islands campaign represented one of the strangest encounters of World War II. Curving southwestward from the southwest coast of Alaska like the tail of a stingray, the rugged, volcanic Aleutians belong to both the United States and Russia.
