Penelope Auberge is at her breaking point. With an overbearing mother, a married boyfriend, and a boss who gives Pen’s high-profile finance clients to male colleagues, it feels like nothing she’s accomplished in her thirty-two years belongs to her. There, she meets siblings Deanna and Grant, who attempt to coax Pen out of her socially anxious shell.

Historia
Although Everett Cline can hardly keep up with the demands of his homestead, he won't humiliate himself by looking for a helpmate ever again--not after being jilted by three mail-order brides. When a well-meaning neighbor goes behind his back to bring yet another mail-order bride to town, he has good reason to doubt it will work, especially after getting a glimpse at the woman in question. She's the prettiest woman he's ever seen, and it's just not possible she's there to marry a simple homesteader like him.

This should be labeled as a Christian romance
Revisado: 08-14-23
The characters were mostly likable in this story about a couple living on Kansas homestead. The only problem I had was with the use of Christian scripture throughout. I don’t like books that rely on religion to tell their stories. It feels stilted and artificial due to all the prayers and such that don’t seem true to the time and place. It should be labeled as a Christian romance.

Historia
Montreal, 1947. To support her once-prosperous family, June Grant joins a steno pool in a prestigious advertising firm. For June, it’s hard to imagine having the kind of life her parents want—the kind of life her sister Daisy has, with a well-off husband and two precocious kids. But Daisy might not be a picture-perfect housewife after all. As June makes her own waves in the advertising world, she probes a hidden side of her sister’s life.

Absorbing storyline
Revisado: 07-15-23
I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. The characters were multifaceted and well developed. The dialog is extremely believable. The narrator did a great job and has a pleasant voice. This semi-biographical novel portrays a very specific time in the life of a young woman in Montreal after WWII.

Historia
In Tokyo, 16-year-old Nao has decided there's only one escape from her aching loneliness and her classmates' bullying. But before she ends it all, Nao first plans to document the life of her great grandmother, a Buddhist nun who's lived more than a century. A diary is Nao's only solace—and will touch lives in ways she can scarcely imagine. Across the Pacific, we meet Ruth, a novelist living on a remote island who discovers a collection of artifacts washed ashore in a Hello Kitty lunchbox - possibly debris from the devastating 2011 tsunami.

Author narration for the win!
Revisado: 05-31-23
When the author narrates their own book, one is able to literally hear the writing in their voice, with proper emphasis and intonation. A Tale for the Time Being is an excellent example of this. The storyline is unique and enjoyable, thought provoking.

Abridged version?
Revisado: 11-25-21
Having read this book years ago, I remembered parts of it… parts which seem to be missing from the audiobook. While the book is one of my favorites of all time, the audiobook seems to be missing a good chunk of the original; I remember descriptions of NYC during the battles over unions as well as mention of a wife and children Cormac had and outlived. My advice, find the original and read it for yourself if you are able.

"Just three dates. That's all I'm asking. One boy shares your sense of humor. Another has similar interests and ideals. The third boy has a helpful heart like yours." When Aditi Gupta comes home late from work as a pediatric resident one night and her grandfather offers this pitch, she reluctantly agrees. She's far too busy with med school to be dating, and besides, she dreams of a love for the ages, like her parents, not an arranged marriage. And yet she finds herself agreeing to three dates because she loves her grandfather. All she has to do is make herself utterly ineligible.

Paint your toes. Pick up the wrong coffee and bagel order. Drive from Brooklyn to Jersey in traffic so slow you want to tear your hair out. It’s amazing all the useless things I can accomplish while on hold for three hours with customer service. Three hours when I should be getting the Date-in-a-Box website ready to launch at the big business expo in a few days. Except my shiny new website is glitching, and my inner rage-monster is ready to scorch some earth...when he finally picks up. Not the robot voice I expected but a real live human named Kal.

Unique romance
Revisado: 04-01-21
I read/listen to a lot of books. Romances have all started to sound the same. While this one does have a similar plot line, the dialog and the storyline are very well done and provided a unique view. Overall, well done and fun.
