Historia
In Pequot Landing, there are two sights to see: The largest elm in America, which dominates the stately old village green, and the house of Lady Harleigh. When the Great War ended, she was the most beautiful bride in the village, and though she was widowed soon after, mourning dampened neither her beauty nor her spirits. By the time the Great Depression rolls around, she is the unchallenged center of Pequot society - lovely and energetic, but subject to bouts of grim melancholy that hint at something dark beneath her surface.

Excellent novel; weak narration
Revisado: 09-28-24
I love this novel. I found the reading distracting. Many words were mispronounced with the emphasis on the wrong syllable. I found the voicing of the main female character off putting. She sounded like a child. I think the reader was trying too hard to make her sound feminine. Read the kindle version.

Don’t get the audiobook version!
Revisado: 10-17-22
This is, hands down, the worst performance of an audiobook I have ever listened to. Get the kindle edition or the paper book. Do not get this audiobook. Craig swallows loudly every few seconds and doesn’t move his head away from the mic to do it. This alone is pure torture. In addition, he reads like an average 4th grader, faltering during sentences, leaving gaps and putting the emphasis on the wrong places. He pronounces nearly all the medical terms wrong and there are lots of them. This, at least, is I comical. The book itself is fairly interesting. I have learned that it’s ok to eat a lot of protein on a keto diet among other useful facts. It is more of a reference book, so an audiobook is not a good format. A physical book would probably be the best.

Historia
Sy Montgomery's popular 2011 Orion magazine piece, "Deep Intellect", about her friendship with a sensitive, sweet-natured octopus named Athena and the grief she felt at her death, went viral, indicating the widespread fascination with these mysterious, almost alien-like creatures. Since then Sy has practiced true immersion journalism, from New England aquarium tanks to the reefs of French Polynesia and the Gulf of Mexico, pursuing these wild, solitary shape-shifters.

Too much anthropomorphizing and not enough science
Revisado: 04-26-22
I listened to the entire book to glean the occasional tidbits of fact. Her awed, whispery voice is hard to stomach. Montgomery modulates her volume too much for an audiobook. Often I missed parts because her already whispering voice had dropped even quieter. I thought I was getting a scientific book about octopuses (which the author tells us is the correct plural), but although sprinkled with facts, the book is mostly emotion-laden anthropomorphizing about what the octopuses are thinking. If you want science about octopuses, find another book.

Historia
Lissie is a nurse in a gritty, hectic London neighborhood. Always terribly competent and good at keeping it all together, she’s been suffering quietly with PTSD after helping to save the victim of a shocking crime. Her supervisor quietly arranges for Lissie to spend a few months doing a much less demanding job in the little town of Kirrinfeif in Scottish Highlands, hoping that the change of scenery will help her heal. Lissie will be swapping places with Cormack, an Army veteran who’s Kirrinfeif’s easygoing nurse/paramedic/all-purpose medical man.

Disappointing
Revisado: 05-06-21
I never really lost myself in the story. So many times. The storyline was so contrived that I rolled my eyes. Some parts were supposed to be funny? But I think I only chuckled one time.
