This was really interesting in some parts but really hokey and all over the place in other parts. I struggled with her religion/spiritual/ paranormal beliefs.

This is an interesting collection of interconnected stories. some of them I absolutely loved and would love a whole book on just that one story, some less so. Engaging and interesting.

This book was a very strange mixture of hard core science and feminist theory/queer theory. The other point was that the individual is different and sex is not binary, which I agree with. Prum cited some interesting studies and I really enjoyed learning about those. He wanted to write a book for scientists and non scientists and he didn't accomplish that. He didn't define basic terms and made a lot of assumptions about what the reader already knew. As someone with a strong biological background I felt lost at times. The information was all over the place and I never really felt like he got to a point.

Omar El Akkad is a gem of an author. I read his book American War by chance last year and absolutely loved it. This one is a little less complex, a little less dark. it is beautifully written, with deep complex characters and a powerful message. What a book!

I saw this listed a few months ago in the Audible Originals and since I love Rowley I downloaded it. I had a rough couple of days this month and needed a light sweet read so I listened to this one. For the cherry on top, this was narrated by Neil Patrick Harris. This novella is the story of Paul, who has recently had his heart broken and is trying desperately to find himself and move forward alone. It is class Rowley- sweet, a little sad but beautiful. I loved the little addition of the street dogs in Venice and the words we can all use about holding on to our selves and finding our strengths. It was exactly what I needed at the time.

Fantasy little collection of Twilight zone like stories. I enjoyed each and every one although the first one may be my favorite.

This was such an enjoyable read. The story of the first woman to through hike the Appalachian trail. She completed the trail at age 67 in 1955. You get tons of fun information about the trail, what her journey was like, her challenges, and her successes. There are so many wonderful stories about people she meets on the trail. There is also a lot of back story about Emma Gatewood's life story and the story of the Appalachian trial. Super uplifting and fun to read.

Let me start by saying that I always feel guilty judging memoirs badly because it feels bad to judge someone's life story. The first 75% of this book is boring- slow, she moves, she doesn't like where she lives, they are poor, she moves again. Slow, overly detailed and boring. The writing takes away from the story instead of adding to it - moments that could have actually been tense or emotional are blah because of the writing.

The whole basis of the book as "The Polygamist's Daughter" and a look into this branch of polygamy is just silly. She barely knows her dad and they don't even really bother talking about religion to the kids. She lives a fairly "normal" poor American experience imo as a child. She goes to public school for the most part, talks about books and TV she experiences, sneaks out, has boyfriends and friends, and wears regular clothes. She is neglected by her parents, is expected to work long hours, doesn't get enough to eat, and one point is left with family in Mexico for a year. it is a sad story but seems to have little to do with polygamy.

The last bit of the book was the hardest for me. Essentially as she becomes an adult she moves from one cult to another. I could take the hypocrisy of her condemning her parents for their kooky beliefs as she talks about her own. She uses to God to justify stupid things (is God must have made me sick so I had to stay home and avoid tragedy, while other people in her family suffer because I guess God didn't care about them). She talks about years of therapy which she likely needed and then goes into this wacky rant about how she doesn't care about that her human father neglected and abandoned her because he is not her father God is her father. Clearly through the end of the book she does care and is still angry. Using religion to fix all her problems created by religion. just seems goofy to me and I just wanted the book to be over.

I had no idea what to expect, I am not typically a science fiction reader. This was a week thought out, beautifully written story. I absolutely loved the way that the characters crossed and the story unfolded. I loved the consequences on politics, relationships, religion, outlook on life, etc. Just a fantastic book.

I saw this mentioned a few places with good reviews. Dystopian future, bands of roving librarians that bring approved materials and books to isolated communities. it sounded fun and interesting with an LGBTQIA bent. in actuality it was just ok, too much dialogue, too many hidden desires.
