Historia
After facing war, death, unruly gods, and unmitigated evil, Minalan the Spellmonger is forced to return to Farise, the site of his earliest battles, with the simple assignment to conquer the subtropical city-state and expel the pirates that plague the kingdom’s shipping. Tired of warfare, Minalan embarks on a clandestine campaign to do so, assuming an alias and setting up shop in Farise as a mere Practical Adept as cover for his operation. Recruiting a cadre of talented agents to assist, he reluctantly begins the task of infiltrating and observing Farisian society.

Wonderful return to the charm of the series
Revisado: 09-26-24
I did not love the last couple books of Spellmonger series. They felt a bit overloaded and didn’t have the buildups for the payoffs, or felt like the author at time was trying to shoehorn the title in as much as possible. Which I understand, Terry is on a very demanding publishing schedule, but not being able to sit on the book more and ruminate on them had consequences.
This however was a delightfully slower book. It was not over crammed. It showed how mentally bruised Minalin is and how he needed time away to recover, and yet still get spellmonger stuff done. Old questions were answered and new powers revealed. I was extremely happy with this book.

Loved every minuter
Revisado: 06-16-24
Read it on the website first and this was one of the arcs that stood out to me. Old magic, divisions, revenge, politics, and witches. It’s an arc I kept finding myself thinking about in idle moments. So glad I get to enjoy it as an audiobook now too.

More of the same great content you expect from this series. Tom the clown is back and this book does a great job at showing the beginnings of how having a class in this world influences and changes you

Who would have guessed that? When these cruel gods shuffled Earth like a deck of cards, nothing was in the same place anymore. Monsters, dungeons, and magical items appear scattered across the globe. Not what I was expecting
Revisado: 02-02-24
I was expecting this to be somewhere between slice of life and some dungeon diving and trading. Market and town grow, good relationships, some conflict, but he sticks largely to the shop.
This was the case in the beginning, but it takes some extreme turns later. Enough turns I don’t really think it was fair to title the series “Jake’s magical Market” but I’ll find out with book 2. But without spoilers, I’ll just say this story is a wild ride
Travis Baldree was of course great as usual.

Great Conclusion!
Revisado: 01-31-24
I love this series and would pre order the kindle books, read them within a day of release, then get the audiobooks as they were released a couple months later.
This book exceeded my expectations of my wait for an epic conclusion. The last echo was full of surprises and was an epic conclusion to the series. I cannot wait for Bierce’s next series of the aetheriad.

Historia
Just as Fred is settling down in his new abode, he receives word that a favor is being called in, one he promised to a dangerously powerful member of otherworldly royalty. Bracing danger, adventure, and unknown threats, Fred is instead asked to take on an entirely different role than anticipated. Acting as interim professor at one of the few universities for supernatural entities, Fred will have to navigate a strange environment, eccentric coworkers, and unenthusiastic students. Yet that alone won't be enough, for this college has more history than the tales in its tomes.

Good but it lacked the house of Fred charm
Revisado: 09-16-23
The previous books were about Fred exploring the para-human world more, making friends, allies and enemies. And through it all, it’s mostly been focused on Fred building those relationships through the various chaos and secrets he finds himself embroiled in time and again. And that’s been the real charm to this series. How uninteresting Fred wants to be as a bit of a foil to the more chaotic para-humans around him, and how his relationships with the para-humans grows in the midst of that conflict. And while he does still want to live his simple life and doesn’t want the chaos of the para-human world, it grows his relationships with his house and that makes it worth it.
Fred spends this book at a school as a guest teacher removed from that environment. Some of the friends come by to visit, but they do so as guest lecturers at the school, and that type of dynamic made them more formal by nature, when they are typically a bit more fun and chaotic. Conflict and chaos happen, but his friends are more composed and professional in response to the brashness of students. And so in that more formalized type role, you also didn’t have many opportunities to show that side or the growth of the house of Fred aside from the necromancer battle and revelation about Al. Fred’s relationships with his students was also more formal because of this environment, so the new characters he meets are not giving the feelings of bonds of equals through chaos in the same way the house of Fred
It felt more like a bridge book. The book didn’t do to much interesting to grow the main characters, but it set up one (possibly two) foes, introduced some students, established a change in the conflict of the battle against Quinn, and it introduced the mysterious vampire book. There were absolutely feels, surprises, revelations, and conflict, but I am happy that Fred is done with his time teaching and will return to his home and clan in the next book.

It’s good but it will punch you in the feels
Revisado: 06-02-23
Not going to spoil more than the title and the cover, but this book is the heaviest in the series so far, and you know how good the author is with having characters be the cruelest kind of unfair. Just make sure you’re in a place for a lot of anger, goblin chapters, and tragedy before you listen.
