Ensemble cast is offputting till you get used to it.
Revisado: 04-27-22
Don’t listen to people who say that Dolly Parton ruins this book. I’m not a Dolly Parton fan, I do like some of her music but I’m not a rabid fan. When her voice comes on it is dominating, it’s a very distinctive voice that takes over. However, if you keep listening and get used to it, you will never forget it’s Dolly Parton but you will concentrate more on the story and less on her voice. Plus, her character in the story is not the main character. So she doesn’t dominate the entire book just the excerpts that she’s in.
The book itself is enjoyable to listen to. The other characters are very well cast and it’s easy to Immerse yourself in the story. It was a little bit of a formula story, but because the narration was so expertly done, I still enjoyed listening to it. The ending was a little anti-climatic, but that’s OK because I was happy for the characters.
All in all, an easy, enjoyable listen.

Spoiler alert!
Revisado: 03-14-17
Very disappointed in this installment. Someone very dear to Mike dies needlessly in a ridiculous manner. They go on a quest, which they accomplish, but to what end? I can't figure out what was the purpose of this book except, to possibly kill off Paul, and tell stories of his past. The plot of the story is in no way advanced, and this leaves the death of Paul seemingly gratuitous. I probably could have skipped this volume entirely and not missed a thing. I will however go onto the next buyer hoping Tufo regains his footing in the series.

Always leave a little salt on the bread. Ikey Solomon's favorite saying is also his way of doing business, and in the business of thieving he's very successful indeed. Ikey's partner in crime is his mistress, the forthright Mary Abacus, until misfortune befalls them. They are parted and each must make the harsh journey from thriving nineteenth century London to the convict settlement of Van Diemen's Land.

Great story, but...
Revisado: 07-06-16
I love Orson Scott card, I really do. But in this book, the juvenile bickering and arguing that goes on forever and ever and ever, drove me absolutely insane. I love the story, the premise, the twists and turns. But, my goodness, if those two boys don't stop their arguing, I'm going to kill one of them myself and, they won't be coming back!

But it all becomes horrifyingly real when a murder in the past destroys the foundation of Kate’s present-day life. Suddenly, that medallion is the only thing protecting Kate from blinking out of existence. Kate learns that the 1893 killing is part of something much more sinister, and her genetic ability to time travel makes Kate the only one who can fix the future.

OK book, but narration has a problem.
Revisado: 03-10-16
This book was OK. Definitely geared toward a younger adult set. The problem I had was with the narration. The narrator is obviously foreign, although she has excellent English skills. The problem is her enunciation is overly precise. Given that the cast characters and location are all USA, it is very distracting to hear them speak with a foreign accent, possibly Brazilian? She is excellent with delineating characters, I always knew who was speaking, it was just that darn enunciation. Every single syllable vowel and consonant is heard and nobody native to USA speaks like that. Maybe it's just me, but I will not be reading the rest of the series.

Good story, mediocre performance.
Revisado: 12-09-15
I found the storyline good enough that I am curious to read more books and see what happens with the characters. My only objection would be the narration. The performer, does well enough with the narrative and voice of the main character. However, when it comes to other characters, especially men, she falls woefully short. Their voices come across as stereo typical and forced. She does not realize that it is the content, wording and flow that allow us to perceive the differences between characters be they men or women. Her rendering of male voices I find so ridiculous, that I'm not sure I can even listen to another book. Rather than buy sequels from audible books, I will more than likely buy them from Kindle and read them myself. I'm sure my imagination will be a vast improvement over the Audible performance.

Dead heat: good story, less than adequate narration.
Revisado: 05-19-15
Story is what I have come to expect, very entertaining and interesting. Narration however is a different matter: fine for adult voices but, narrator is out of his depth when it comes to portraying children. They come across as simply being irritating. Indian voices come across as somewhat stereotypical.

If not for the Yawn!
Revisado: 10-16-13
Would you try another book from Dane St. John and/or David DeBoy?
St John No, Deboy Yes
Has If Not for the Dawn turned you off from other books in this genre?
Certainly not.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Its been a while since I attempted to listen to this book. The narrator was fine, but the story Is so slow and boring I could not get through the book. after two tries, I have given up. The premise of the story is so impossible and the author does nothing to suspend our common sense logic of science The book is terrible and I will not try this author again
