Historia
Thrawn’s latest triumph still rests newly on his shoulders. He has led the Chiss to victory and brought glory to the House of Mitth, but the true threat to the Ascendancy has not yet been extinguished. Their foes do not send threats or ultimatums, do not mass ships on the edge of the Chaos. Their weapons come cloaked in smiles and generosity: Gifts offered freely. Services granted unconditionally. Across the Ascendancy, seemingly inconsequential events could herald the doom of the Chiss.

Boring battles yet again
Revisado: 02-14-24
I like these books, but I feel like Zahn needs to work on his space battles. Having one or two ships angling around and launching spheres to take out one to two other ships just isn’t very interesting or exciting.

Historia
Beyond the edge of the galaxy lies the Unknown Regions: chaotic, uncharted, and near impassable, with hidden secrets and dangers in equal measure. And nestled within its swirling chaos is the Ascendancy, home to the enigmatic Chiss and the Nine Ruling Families that lead them. The peace of the Ascendancy, a beacon of calm and stability, is shattered after a daring attack on the Chiss capital that leaves no trace of the enemy.

Lazy battles
Revisado: 02-04-24
Thrawn has no strategic or tactical sense. He’s just a slightly racist wizard that uses cultural stereotypes to predict the future with implausible precision.
I love the characters. I love the politics and world building. For the love of god, please give us some better battles and actual strategy

Thrawn is not a believable character
Revisado: 01-03-24
It’s a fun book, but ultimately a letdown. We are supposed to believe that Thrawn is a brilliant strategist and tactician, but he does not display the characteristics of a a real strategist. His ability to predict the actions of his enemies is so ridiculously detailed that he needs no understanding of military theory and can be completely reckless without fear of consequences, as his plans miraculously have 100% chance of success. Zahn might as well say that he is force-sensitive and is using the force to predict the actions of his opponents, because his supposed “insights” are just as magical.

Historia
Hugh Quarshie reads the extraordinary autobiography of Solomon Northup. His harrowing true story, first published in 1853, was a key factor in the national debate over slavery prior to the American Civil War, significantly changing public opinion on the topic of abolition. It tells the horrifying tale of Solomon Northup, an educated, free black man living with his wife and children in New York State, whose life takes an appalling turn when he is kidnapped, drugged and sold into slavery.

Here are the thrills, grandeur, and unabashed fun of the Greek myths, stylishly retold by Stephen Fry. The legendary writer, actor, and comedian breathes life into ancient tales, from Pandora's box to Prometheus's fire, and transforms the adventures of Zeus and the Olympians into emotionally resonant and deeply funny stories, without losing any of their original wonder. Learned notes from the author offer rich cultural context. This volume is a doorway into a captivating world.

Magnificent, marvelous, and mellifluous Mythos
Revisado: 10-20-20
Stephen Fry retells the ancient myths with joy as the primary objective; his own as well as that of the listener. It is clear that, like a good teacher, he had a lot of fun in presenting and retelling the subject matter. If you are unsure, (perhaps Myth isn’t normally your thing), I say download the book just to listen to Stephen Fry; he’s quite entertaining, and in the process, you might even learn something.

Everything about this audiobook is worth a listen. Noah’s narration is seriously excellent. His writing is clear, humorous and relatable. His life story is more interesting than most fiction. Highly recommend.

A powerful novel for a unique character
Revisado: 10-26-17
Thrawn’s philosophy, ethics and genius are all displayed in this book. Like his subordinates, the listener is compelled to learn from Thrawn’s wisdom. Yet, the book, if taken to be Thrawn’s opus of sorts, serves also as its own critique. We can see in Thrawn’s successes how he sowed the seeds of his failure. It is apparent that despite his own firm sense of ethics, and almost certainly unwillingly, he is nevertheless an agent of the dark side. What then can the listener learn from Thrawn? He is certainly a unique character, and very likable at that, yet ultimately he strays from the path of light to the dark side.

Historia
Growing up in rural China during Mao's Cultural Revolution, Da Chen was part Horatio Alger, part Holden Caulfeld, befriending both a gang of young thugs, as well as an elegant, older Chinese woman who teaches him English - and opens the door to a new life. Chen's remarkable story of triumph is filled with the universal qualities that distinguish the very best memoirs as it masterfully recounts the concerns of childhood that transcend both time and place.

Not the most interesting murakami book
Revisado: 09-06-16
To me the characters felt a bit too depressed and unmoved to make for an interesting story. Different from many other murakami books, like 1q84 or even Kafka on the shore, which feature unique and interesting characters

Uncompromisingly clear
Revisado: 08-19-16
Do you want theories about the future? Do you want a catch all template for how to build a startup company? This isn't the book for you.
Thiel's book is an unqualified, common sense look at how entrepreneurs can and have succeeded in building companies that truly innovate, bringing the world from zero to one. Eloquent, but unconcerned with nuance, Thiel succeeds like a master salesman. When you finish reading the book, you feel as if the arguments had been your own all along.
