Historia
As a botanist and professor of plant ecology, Robin Wall Kimmerer has spent a career learning how to ask questions of nature using the tools of science. As a Potawatomi woman, she learned from elders, family, and history that the Potawatomi, as well as a majority of other cultures indigenous to this land, consider plants and animals to be our oldest teachers.

Historia
Intense, brilliant and moving, The Door is a compelling story about the relationship between two women of opposing backgrounds and personalities: one, an intellectual and writer; the other, her housekeeper, a mysterious, elderly woman who sets her own rules and abjures religion, education, pretense and any kind of authority. Beneath this hardened exterior of Emerence lies a painful story that must be concealed.

Odd and interesting

Very deep investigation into relationship between two exceptional women— a writer and her servant, though each is much more than her label. It’s not an easy book but it’s a fascinating book.

Historia
Romania, 1989. Communist regimes are crumbling across Europe. Seventeen-year-old Cristian Florescu dreams of becoming a writer, but Romanians aren’t free to dream; they are bound by rules and force. Amidst the tyrannical dictatorship of Nicolae Ceaușescu in a country governed by isolation and fear, Cristian is blackmailed by the secret police to become an informer. He’s left with only two choices: betray everyone and everything he loves—or use his position to creatively undermine the most notoriously evil dictator in Eastern Europe.

This well-researched story was startling for me. There is terrible horror in it, and usually I avoid that, but when it comes to historical truth I don’t want to hide my head in the sand. The reader was excellent. I am grateful to Ruta Sepetys for writing this book, and grateful that I read it.

Good historical setting and sympathetic characters, but not always believable in terms of human behavior. I did enjoy it and learned more about some of Spain’s painful history. Good narration.

Historia
Lojong is the Tibetan Buddhist practice that involves working with short phrases (called "slogans") as a way of generating bodhichitta, the heart and mind of enlightened compassion. Though the practice is more than a millennium old, it has become popular in the West in only the last 20 years or so - and it has become very popular indeed because it's a practice that one can fit very well into an ordinary life, and because it works.

Historia
For three crucial years in the 1930s, the Spanish Civil War dominated headlines in America and around the world as volunteers flooded to Spain to help its democratic government fight off a fascist uprising led by Francisco Franco and aided by Hitler and Mussolini. Today we're accustomed to remembering the war through Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls and Robert Capa's photographs. But Adam Hochschild has discovered some less familiar yet far more compelling characters who reveal the full tragedy and importance of the war.

This book is jam packed with history told with the complexity that it needs in order to be truthful. The issues and horrors described are absolutely relevant to our times. May we all pay attention, and may we become better at this weird hard job of being humans. Aiy!

Historia
Set in the turbulent years following the death of Lorenzo de' Medici, George Eliot's fourth novel, Romola, moves the stage from the English countryside of the 19th century to an Italy four centuries before her time. It tells the tale of a young Florentine woman, Romola de' Bardi, and her coming of age through her troubled marriage to the suave and self-absorbed Greek Tito. Slowly Tito's true character begins to unfurl, and his lies and treachery push Romola toward a more spiritual path, where she transcends into a majestic, Madonna-like role.

Another great Eliot
Revisado: 12-14-22
I am a huge fan ofGeorge Eliot, but I delayed in reading this because I didn’t know if I’d like the historical setting. But I shouldn’t have worried. It has all the elements we count on— great story, complex characters who go through big changes, and plenty of twists of fate. Clearly the research was extensive, which makes the author at home in this long-ago world and allows her to write with her usual fluidity. There is more about the political and religious intrigues of the day than I would have preferred, but I learned a lot too. The reader is amazing. Each character comes alive with her in depth portrayal.
It’s not my favorite of Eliot’s works, but, like all of them, it is brilliant.

Historia
A Russian author, playwright, and physician, Anton Chekhov is widely considered one of the best short-story writers of all time. Having influenced such writers as Ernest Hemingway, Raymond Carver, and James Joyce, Chekhov’s stories are often noted for their stream-of-consciousness style and their vast number.

This extraordinary evocation of a grown daughter’s attachment to her mother - and of both women’s strength and resiliency - recounts Annie’s attempt to first help her mother recover from Alzheimer’s disease and, then, when that proves futile, bear witness to the older woman’s gradual decline and her own experience as a daughter losing a beloved parent. I Remain in Darkness is a new high-water mark for Ernaux, surging with raw emotional power and her sublime ability to use language to apprehend her own life’s particular music.

Historia
Two on a Tower is Hardy's ninth novel and contains perhaps his most complete use of the theme of love across the class and age divide, to beautifully depict Hardy's reverence for science and astronomy. The unhappily married Lady Constantine breaks all the rules of social etiquette when she falls in love with young Swithin St. Cleeve, an astronomer and her social inferior. Despite their differences that society deems unacceptable, together, from an astronomical observatory, the lovers 'sweep the heavens'.

Great with a few reservations
Revisado: 07-05-22
Once again Hardy’s beautiful language takes us through a plot full of perfect impossibilities, with a pair of star-crossed lovers. This time the actual stars play a part, and this gives the story an unusual and interesting frame of reference. Somehow it just doesn’t quite come up to Hardy’s highest standards for me, as the characters are not quite as multidimensional as in other books. But still a fine book that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Michael Kitchen’s precise reading and meticulous pacing bring attention to Hardy’s phrasing and language, which is so masterful. I liked that, but it is true that one is very conscious of the reader all the time, and sometimes that seems like too much.
