Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Wow
Revisado: 12-06-24
Huck Finn wasn’t a great selling point, but after all the praise this book has received I went for it. This is incredible. Sure Huck is in it, but it’s much much more than that. This novel is precise, consistent, engaging, and deserving of all the praise and more.

Meh
Revisado: 11-01-24
Being gay and having read, watched and seen many stories about the AIDS crisis, this one just didn’t land. I was expecting a tear jerker but didn’t go through any tissues. There were interesting moments with grandma and his sister, but otherwise the characters just weren’t engaging or realistic.

Historia
A dark history lingers in Chapel Croft. Five hundred years ago, local Protestant martyrs were betrayed - then burned. Thirty years ago, two teenage girls disappeared without a trace. And a few weeks ago, the vicar of the local parish hanged himself in the nave of the church. Reverend Jack Brooks, a single parent with a fourteen-year-old daughter and a heavy conscience, arrives in the village hoping for a fresh start. Instead, Jack finds a town rife with conspiracies and secrets, and is greeted with a strange welcome package.

Too many priests
Revisado: 11-01-24
For as many vicars that were in the story, it was more holey than holy. It was hard to track, partially because of the wide array of characters (many of them vicars who were referred to as either “vicar”, their first name and/or their last name) and partially because it was an erratic story with plot holes the size of a destroyed church floor.

Visiting her family's South Carolina estate, socialite Gray Godfrey wakes from a night out to an empty bed. Her husband, Paul, is gone, and a thrashing hangover has wiped her memory clean. And Gray may not want him found. Her life is unraveling. When a stranger named Annie calls claiming to know Paul's whereabouts, Gray reluctantly accepts her help.

Were all the twists perfect? No. But I was here for the ride. The discussion of alcoholism reflected some of my experiences and brought me into the story. Both narrators did an amazing job at defining their voice which helped bring the story to life.

Young Hiram Walker was born into bondage. When his mother was sold away, Hiram was robbed of all memory of her - but was gifted with a mysterious power. Years later, when Hiram almost drowns in a river, that same power saves his life. This brush with death births an urgency in Hiram and a daring scheme: to escape from the only home he’s ever known. So begins an unexpected journey that takes Hiram from the corrupt grandeur of Virginia’s proud plantations to desperate guerrilla cells in the wilderness, from the coffin of the South to dangerously idealistic movements in the North.

Historia
Theo Coatl was supposed to be just a job. On paper, my twin and I are recent grads moving into the eccentric artist's mansion for a once-in-a-lifetime internship opportunity. In reality, Dre and I are spies for our clan—a pair of supes known as Shock and Awe who could melt our enemy's brain as easily as we could extract the intel we were after. Whatever works. Our mark isn't the only one keeping secrets, and Theo's proximity is… doing things to me. This man could fulfill every dark desire I've buried beneath the surface, things even my twin doesn't know I crave.

Revisado: 09-05-24
Five stars for the series, but this book gets three. Many open threads were satisfactorily resolved, and the stage is set for the upcoming spinoff (Ziggy randomly has a chapter in this!?!). Overall, much more soap opera than comic book – I like explosions inside AND outside the bedroom! It’s great that the twins get a turn in the spotlight but I wish each twin had their own narrator, or that Philip Alces defined each character more.

Historia
It's time for me to start pulling my weight in the Suarez clan—to prove I'm worth more than the plays I make on the field or the dirt I dig up on rival families. I want to make Wolfy proud. And to not get unalived by Simon. So I volunteered what I had to offer, knowing my infamous genes could be used for uniting two powerful clans in marriage. After all, I'm the only not gay one in my family, so that alone should entice the super-babes looking to get busy with baby-making. I mean, as long as they don't ask me to do math or anything.

Philip Alces is the best narrator on this platform. The writing is cheeky and thoroughly entertaining. Bonus stars for this line: “… And right now, he’s treating me like the slutty, sporty princess I am.”

Ambrose wakes up on the Coordinated Endeavor with no memory of a launch. There’s more that doesn’t add up: evidence indicates strangers have been on board, the ship’s operating system is voiced by his mother, and his handsome, brooding shipmate has barricaded himself away. But nothing will stop Ambrose from making his mission succeed—not when he’s rescuing his own sister.
