Historia
In the not-too-distant future, a 21-member crew launches from Earth. Their mission: to establish a temporary colony on Mars. Little do they know that colony will become permanent–and the last stand of the human race. Because, without warning, every single person left on Earth simply...vanishes. Now, a thousand years later, the resources needed to sustain life are running out, and the very existence of the Mars colony is threatened. Humankind has only one option–to return to its home planet.

What?
Revisado: 02-26-25
The ending was confusing and unsatisfactory in general. The performances were good, but overall it just left me feeling generally meh.

Historia
As a necromancer, Shae loses a little more of himself every time he uses his magic. Always cold, always touch-starved, the only thing that helps is human contact. But that's hard to come by when those same dark powers scare everyone away from him. Nobody likes a necromancer. Arthur's still bitter and broken after his last lover stabbed him in the back, and the last thing he needs is another brush with evil. When he agrees to escort the wandering necromancer north, he's just doing a public service. But he never expected Shae to be so clingy. Or distractingly attractive.

A surprising love of mine
Revisado: 10-10-24
I loved the world building, the magic system, and the gods. The characters felt truly real. The narration was slow, but not as bad as some people have made it out to be. I thought Shae and Arthur had distinctive voices that fit their characters. That isn’t an easy feat for everyone.

The Politics Were Important
Revisado: 09-04-24
I liked the book. The political conversation was grating at times, even though I believe everything that Holly does. But what I recognize is that when your mother has just died of a plague and people are telling you it isn’t real, you’re going to be really angry about it. You’re going to rant inside your head. It was authentic, and the same sort of obsessive thinking Rodney displayed except he felt emboldened to spout his nonsense aloud and she felt forced to keep her righteous sense inside. Holly was a compelling character, all of them were. Standing on the precipice of transitions with all of the good and bad that comes with change. I love King and am grateful he continues to write.

Not my favorite Stephen King but I loved the ending. The audio needs to either be cleaned up, or they need to re-record it with a voice actor.

Great story!
Revisado: 07-17-24
I’ve read a lot of Hendrix’s books, and this was a bit of a departure, in the best way possible. Getting in the nitty gritty of family dynamics can be challenging as a writer. I think he did an admirable job. And the narration was top notch.

Jarring, sad, a great depiction of the cycle of pain within families. Katherine was a lot at times, but I imagine that’s the point.

Narration or Editing?
Revisado: 05-21-24
I think some people’s issues with the narration is partially due to the editing. It’s very choppy and rough, like a first draft instead of a final product. The story was okay, could have been shorter and tighter.

Good, But Prepare For Sadness
Revisado: 05-16-24
Skillfully written and performed. Beyond a shiver of nervousness during the Cube scene, I didn’t feel scared. Just sad for everyone. It’s thought provoking, but a tad pretentious.

Prejudice dressed up as philosophy
Revisado: 05-15-23
I think Taoism is probably a beautiful religion and a natural companion to Buddhism, at least that’s what I always heard. That is not how it’s depicted here. It paints Buddhism as a religion of bitterness and misrepresents basic Buddhist concepts. It discounts science for no real reason. And scientists know why birds fly south. What the heck? Taoism can’t possibly be so haughty and bigoted, right? Why do people like this book and see it as positive when it’s so mean? The narrator portrayed the arrogance perfectly, I have to say. Good job narrator.

Great even to the non-novice
Revisado: 05-04-23
I have studied Buddhism for a long time and sometimes I feel as if I forget basic concepts or the meaning of certain words as I fill my mind with more abstract concepts. This is an easy guide that I think I will revisit in order to double check my knowledge when necessary. It’s almost an encyclopedia of basic Buddhist ideas. Highly effective primer.
