People Need Books Need People
Revisado: 12-17-23
A beautiful story of very disparate characters coming together through the book list. The characters in the book become real people in the reader’s imagination. A great story …maybe not a rough & tumble intense mystery, but a gentle reminder of the power of literature to help us understand who we are meant to be.

Historia
Instantly recognizable, Auguste Renoir's masterpiece depicts a gathering of his real friends enjoying a summer Sunday on a café terrace along the Seine near Paris. A wealthy painter, an art collector, an Italian journalist, a war hero, a celebrated actress, and Renoir's future wife, among others, share this moment of la vie moderne, a time when social constraints were loosening and Paris was healing after the Franco-Prussian War.

Connecting to all who HAVE TO paint?
Revisado: 12-10-23
Liked: excellent delineation of character, insight into painting/impressionism. Realistic characters. Renoir was a real person as Vreeland portrayed him.
Disliked: Way too much detail about 1880 Paris, the subjects of the painting & the entire boat race could have been omitted and the novel would have still been impressive .

Historia
Among the most celebrated and beloved novels of 2021, Anthony Doerr’s gorgeous third novel is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope—and a book. In Cloud Cuckoo Land, Doerr has created a magnificent tapestry of times and places that reflects our vast interconnectedness—with other species, with each other, with those who lived before us, and with those who will be here after we’re gone.

Revisado: 07-16-23
In Cloud Cuckoo Land Anthony Doerr brings to life 4 different worlds bound together by an ancient tale from a fifth world. Moments in the story are very compelling. A bit too much detail for my liking, but he does create an intriguing story.

Historia
When a peculiar letter arrives inviting Armand Gamache to an abandoned farmhouse, the former head of the Sûreté du Québec discovers that a complete stranger has named him one of the executors of her will. Still on suspension, and frankly curious, Gamache accepts and soon learns that the other two executors are Myrna Landers, the bookseller from Three Pines, and a young builder. None of them had ever met the elderly woman. The will is so odd and includes bequests that are so wildly unlikely that Gamache and the others suspect the woman must have been delusional.

Historia
Rare-book dealer Ashlyn Greer’s affinity for books extends beyond the intoxicating scent of old paper, ink, and leather. She can feel the echoes of the books’ previous owners—an emotional fingerprint only she can read. When Ashlyn discovers a pair of beautifully bound volumes that appear to have never been published, her gift quickly becomes an obsession. Not only is each inscribed with a startling incrimination, but the authors, Hemi and Belle, tell conflicting sides of a tragic romance.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Warm delightful characters for whom you cheer when they make the right decisions and become sad when they don’t. And a wise omniscient octopus whose actions make you consider just how remarkably bright creatures they are. Delightful story.
