Historia
It’s January 2, 1960: the day that Massachusetts Senator John F. Kennedy declared his candidacy; and with this opening scene, Chris Wallace offers listeners a front-row seat to history. From the challenge of primary battles in a nation that had never elected a Catholic president, to the intense machinations of the national conventions—where JFK chose Lyndon B. Johnson as his running mate over the impassioned objections of his brother Bobby—this is a nonfiction political thriller filled with intrigue, cinematic action, and fresh reporting.

Nixon rehabilitated?
Revisado: 01-25-25
As an 11-year-old I stuffed envelopes for the Kennedy campaign and like so many worshipEd the ground he walked on. Chris Wallace does a good job of reminding us that Kennedy was a sex addict and that the election of 1960 was essentially stolen by Joe Kennedy‘s money, Lyndon Johnson’s ballot box stuffing And the Chicago Democratic machine. Sadly, however, there was very little original material and everything seems to be sourced from other books. The book almost reads as if it was written by artificial intelligence, pedantic & dry. Still, I learned some things I had not known about the election, so I stayed with the book all the way to the end. Chris Wallace’s postscript, reminding us of what a seditionist Donald Trump is,was unnecessary. If even Nixon seems like a constitutional patriot, the book had already made clear how far our political discourse has fallen.

Revisado: 10-29-24
I thought the authors conjecture is probably too fantastical to be true. I thought the narrator was just a little too enthusiastic. It was almost offputting - as if he was trying to sell us readers. Still this is a story worth hearing.

The annoying narrator
Revisado: 09-26-24
Narrator apparently in New York Times critic was hell-bent to injecting himself into every interview when he really didn’t need to be there. Example:while interviewing Barack Obama instead of just letting Obama speak, the narrator has to interject “uh/huh,uh-huh”Unfortunately, his compulsion to put himself into every interview, likely the result of an experience, detracted from the story, which is of course, a fascinating story.

Confusing
Revisado: 08-16-24
I only got about 20% of the way into this Japanese classic. It is extremely difficult to follow on audible and would be better as a printed book I suspect for most people. There is a plethora of names that are unfamiliar to an American ear. More over, after 10 hours of listening, I tired of the endless and frankly tragic mentality of the young man who was constantly looking to draw blood with his sword and prove his manhood. The world doesn’t need stories like this that encourage human beings to go out and slaughter one another.

Presumed Innocent brings to life our worst nightmare: that of an ordinary citizen facing conviction for the most terrible of all crimes. It's the stunning portrayal of one man's all-too-human, all-consuming fatal attraction for a passionate woman who is not his wife, and the story of how his obsession puts everything he loves and values on trial - including his own life. It's an audiobook that lays bare a shocking world of betrayal and murder, as well as the hidden depths of the human heart. It will hold you and haunt you...long after you have reached its shattering conclusion.

One of the most ponderous tones I’ve ever allowed myself to listen
Revisado: 12-17-23
this appears to be largely a transcription from court records and goes into enormously, obscure detail, most of which is unnecessary. I’m mad at myself for listening to this book for some six hours before finally throwing up my hands and discussed and moving onto something more fruitful.

Why is this Story so Enduring?
Revisado: 11-02-23
I read this only after completing Walter Isaacson's recent profile of Elon Musk. Apparently many of Musk's ideas were inspired by this story, so curiosity overcame my aversion to science fiction. Hitchhiker did nothing to change my tendency. The story appears to be have been written when a highly educated guy on LSD was locked in a closet with a tape recorder. It wanders all over the place with unpronouncably named characters.
The narrator does the best he can to give the story life, but comes off sounding like a 1930's british movie character.
In the end, the book is for what Myers-Briggs topology calls "Intuitive Thinkers" (engineers, physicists, scientists ) with vast imagination. I'm a financial guy. End of review.

When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist.

Tortured genius
Revisado: 10-27-23
This is the third Walter Isaacson profile/biography. I’ve listen to on audible. I salute Isaacson for the stamina. It must have taken to keep up with someone as frenetic as Elon Musk. The book did what I hoped it would provide a fairly balanced and seemingly objective profile of a man genius. An individual whose vision and drive are transforming mankind. I have not been an admirer of musk‘s bizarre, conspiracy, theories, and ill advised, pronouncements, and God knows I could never work with this man, or put up with his abuse for five minutes, but one must recognize a force of nature. Musk appears to have good intentions, and a good hard at least for the big picture, but a tragic in ability to empathize with the people immediately before him. The book is a worthwhile read or listen.

Sadly, the author chose to impose some of his political views, especially as a climate denier, but other than that is well written. I’ll be testing the recipes.
