Historia
Alcohol and Medicine have an inextricably intertwined history, with innovations in each altering the path of the other. The story stretches back to ancient times, when beer and wine were used to provide nutrition and hydration, and were employed as solvents for healing botanicals. Over time, alchemists distilled elixirs designed to cure all diseases, monastic apothecaries developed mystical botanical liqueurs, traveling physicians concocted dubious intoxicating nostrums, and the drinks we’re familiar with today began to take form.

“Doctors and Distillers” is easy to love.
Revisado: 07-24-22
It blends everything you need to understand the long and complex relationship between spirits & health. Like a good cocktail, Mr. English skillfully balances the science, history, and beliefs about alcohol & its medicinal consumption, then serves up a deliciously accessible narrative garnished with the perfect amount of wit. This book is just one clear ice cube shy of Camper sliding a cocktail across the bar and delighting you with his research. Luckily, he’s included recipes for drinks as he speaks to you from the pages.

Historia
From the earliest days of civilization, alcohol has been at the center of social rituals and cultures worldwide. But when exactly did drinking become a gendered act? And why have bars long been considered "places for men" when, without women, they might not even exist? With whip-smart insight and boundless curiosity, Girly Drinks unveils an entire untold history of the female distillers, drinkers and brewers who have played a vital role in the creation and consumption of alcohol, from ancient Sumerian beer goddess Ninkasi to iconic 1920s bartender Ada Coleman.

Poor pronunciation of Tibetan & dharma terms
Revisado: 04-21-18
Having the author narrate the book may have not been an option. But not getting someone who could pronounce names & terms correctly does a disservice to the book & reflects poorly on Audible. With the resources on Tibetan language and culture today, even a couch to give the narrator correct pronunciation would have been a great solution since other than this flaw, he did a nice job.
This is not a book for beginning students. There are no explanations of basic concepts or anecdotes about gurus for entertainment. This is a strait talking book about view and thought provoking for any vajrayana student.

Revisado: 05-27-16
If you have been following sleep science and research, there is nothing new for you in this book. This is geared to those who have not realized that sleep is as important as the food we eat or the air we breath. This is the perfect gift to yourself if sleeping 8 hours a night is a fantasy or you think the less sleep you get the more effective you are.
This is not a how to prescription book. No one is the same so what is offered is a range of solutions and resources once you realize that you need to hop on the train to dreamland.
Good night. Sleep tight.

Cheese geek delight
Revisado: 04-21-16
If you know what a gas spectrometer is, love finding out what ph mozzarella is stretchier at and need to know the only cheese intentionally infested with maggots then this is the book for you. Less geeky types my not enjoy this strait forward science book about cheese. There are no descriptions of green mountain pastures with contented cows, no descriptions of the aroma of early morning fresh from the goat milk or the musings of a cheese maker after a long day. There is great facts, info on appellations, & historical tidbits (spoiler: Kraft did not invent Velveeta!) Nice material on sensory analysis & flavor.

Historia
We live in a world that's very different from the one in which Emily Post came of age. Many of us who are nice (but who also sometimes say "f*ck") are frequently at a loss for guidelines about how to be a good person who deals effectively with the onslaught of rudeness we all encounter. To lead us through this this miasma of modern manners, syndicated columnist Amy Alkon - The Advice Goddess - gives us a new set of manners for our 21st-century lives.

F*ck yeah!
Revisado: 01-09-15
Beyond table manners & thank you note etiquette, Alkon reviews what we already should know about coexisting with other human beings. Tips on dealing with noisy neighbors, tipping and people who want to change seats with you on a flight. Advise on what to do when cancer shows up in your circle of friends or you spill a cab on your host's white carpet, sofa or both.
Funny & helpful without any Polyanna sweetness or prim and proper superiority that could have easily crept in.
Give to all your friends for the next gifting holiday or tomorrow (just to let them know you are thinking of them.).

I missed the golden age of radio by decades. It was a peak in the pre-television days when this was entertainment that people looked forward to. The sitcoms of today will be looked back on like these radio dramas.

I was prepared to be underwhelmed. I was wrong.
Revisado: 02-15-14
If you could sum up Paddle Your Own Canoe in three words, what would they be?
Funny, honest, funny.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Why Nick, of course. I am now inspired to construct a table with my own hands without the use of nails.
Have you listened to any of Nick Offerman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
What? He's narrating other books? Bring them on!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I can't point to one specific one, but I find that I'm eating more meat lately.
Any additional comments?
If I were a male, I would have cultivated some lush facial hair immediately after listening.

Historia
When Ryan O'Connell went to stay for a week at the glamorous Chateau Marmont hotel last summer, he didn't quite know what to expect. Would he become instant BFF's with Lindsay Lohan and do lines of coke off of John Belushi's ghost? Would he have vacuous sex in the hotel elevator with Benicio Del Toro, just like Scarlett Johansson once did during an Oscars after-party? Or would he just be really, really bored like Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning were in the movie, Somewhere? The answer, it turned out, was none of the above.

Not worth the paper it's printed on.
Revisado: 02-15-14
What would have made Sex, Drugs, and $25 Salads better?
A story would have been a good start.
Has Sex, Drugs, and $25 Salads turned you off from other books in this genre?
Genre? Is there a genre of whiny personal journal highlighting the writer's expectations and personal shortcomings?
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Pat Young?
I feel sorry for the narrator. The author was probably too embarrassed to read his own work for the audio.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Boredom. You can her more entertaining stories listening to other's conversations at a Starbucks.
Any additional comments?
Save your money. If you must know what the Chateau is like, go and see for yourself. Or do something else you love. Live the life, don't listen to the book.
