Stick with it. It starts out a bit slowly, with not much happening, but the story eventually becomes interesting. With AI becoming more and more prominent in our world, this story is a fascinating perspective on how it could manifest in unexpected ways. Great story.

Historia
Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

Stick with it
Revisado: 03-20-24
If you have listened to most of the Slough House series, this book provides an interesting backstory for a few of the series characters. A big however is that the first half of the book is painfully boring. If you can stick with it that far, keep going, and you’ll be satisfied that you did.

Eye Rolls
Revisado: 03-13-24
Though the action scenes are engaging, the overall plot and details within the action scenes are highly implausible and elicited eye rolls and an occasional wtf from me. I took a chance on this book since it was on sale and I don’t regret it; however, I won’t be buying any of the other books in the series. If you like a lot of action and high body counts, and don’t mind putting your brain in neutral, you may enjoy the series. Not my cup of tea, though.

Historia
Here is Edward Rutherfurd's classic novel of London, a glorious pageant spanning 2,000 years. He brings this vibrant city's long and noble history alive through the ever-shifting fortunes, fates, and intrigues of half-a-dozen families, from the age of Julius Caesar to the 20th century. Generation after generation, these families embody the passion, struggle, wealth, and verve of the greatest city in the world.

A Loooong Slog
Revisado: 02-27-24
I enjoyed Rutherfurd’s Paris, so I purchased London expecting a similar experience. It wasn’t. It was challenging to follow the family ties from generation to generation, and I was unable to feel a connection to any of the characters. What really turned me off, though, was that the villains were ridiculously stereotyped and the narrator gave them a stereotypical nasally villain voice. The villains would have been right at home in an episode of Scooby Doo. I made it through the entire 39 hours, but I had to bump the playback to 1.4x. I won’t be purchasing any further Rutherfurd titles because the time commitment is too great for a mediocre story.

Beautifully Written, Beautifully Read
Revisado: 12-06-23
A story, ultimately, about love. It’s so well written, with deep character development revealed through actions and dialogue, and is an exploration, via the main character, of what truly makes a life well-lived. Mark Helprin’s writing and Bronson Pinchot’s outstanding narration made this a memorable listen.

Historia
A National Book Award finalist for this epic work, Adrienne Mayor delivers a gripping account of Mithradates, the ruthless visionary who began to challenge Rome’s power in 120 B.C. Machiavelli praised his military genius. Kings coveted his secret elixir against poison. Poets celebrated his victories, intrigues, and panache. But until now, no one has told the full story of his incredible life.

Good, but a lot of speculation
Revisado: 10-23-23
This is an interesting biography of Mithridates, but much of what is stated in the book is of a speculative nature and not based on firm evidence. Numerous “scenes” are similar to what would appear in a historical novel. It’s a worthy read to learn more about Mithridates than is typically found in histories of Rome, but keep your critical thinking engaged.

Ho-hum
Revisado: 04-29-23
I don’t understand the great reviews this book has received. I’m an hour and fifty minutes into it and I’ve decided not to waste any more time on it. The story has progressed very little and is not at all compelling. The narration is mediocre at best. The main character’s voice has a flippant quality regardless of the context, and the differentiation between characters is almost non-existent. It’s difficult to tell which character is speaking. The book was free, thankfully, but I wish I had my two hours back.

Historia
Paris in 1895: Alfred Dreyfus, a young Jewish officer, has just been convicted of treason, sentenced to life imprisonment at Devil's Island, and stripped of his rank in front of a baying crowd of 20,000. Among the witnesses to his humiliation is Georges Picquart, the ambitious, intellectual, recently promoted head of the counterespionage agency that Dreyfus had passed secrets to the Germans. At first, Picquart firmly believes in Dreyfus' guilt. But it is not long after Dreyfus is delivered to his desolate prison that Picquart stumbles on information that leads him to suspect that there is still a spy at large in the French military.

Nicely Done
Revisado: 03-31-23
This is an excellent novelization of the Dreyfus Affair. Also, the narrator did a superb job, and I greatly appreciate that he clearly is familiar with French, so that his pronunciations were spot-on. Too often a narrator is hired to narrate a book with many names and words in a foreign language with which the narrator is unfamiliar, so that their awful pronunciations make it painful to listen to. I thank the producers for appropriately matching the narrator to the book.

Great book, poor audio
Revisado: 02-11-23
This fourth book in the Harry Bosch series continues to impress with Michael Connelly’s superb storytelling skills and Dick Hill’s excellent narration.
The audio is bad though. It sounds “foggy”, as it might sound if the microphone had been placed in a closed cardboard box, and I found it very annoying, but stuck with it. I hope this was a fluke with this book only and that none of the rest of the series has such poor audio quality.
