Historia
Ryana, a worthless girl-child, is sold to a mysterious woman who takes her to the home of the Shadow Sisters who are prized for their abilities as spies and assassins. She survives years of training in spite of being unconventional: adopting poisonous bats as familiars - something no one else would dare to do; choosing the blow dart as her weapon of choice - a weapon the Sisters don't teach; and relying on intuition rather than logic. As she completes her training, the Shadow Sisters are under attack and send Ryana out to find out who is killing Sisters and why.

Fun adventure
Revisado: 08-21-22
Fun story of a young female warrior. Kind of super hero story for girls. Older girls anyway. It reads like you g adult fiction but there are couple of scenes in which women experience violence, and while it is not described in detail I would give it an R rating for that reason.

Historia
Beth Culpepper is a lady's maid who is mistaken for a lady! Cast off and stranded at an inn in the way to London, she doesn't feel strong enough to dispute it. The handsome Marquis of Wrexham mistakes her youthful appearance as that of a gently bred schoolgirl whom he feels impelled to help. How did a good girl, proud of her position as lady's maid to Miss Sophy Ludgate, come to this?

My least favorite Alicia Cameron
Revisado: 07-06-19
I have Alicia Cameron's other novels and have really enjoyed listening to them. I like that her stories are "nice" with amusing dialog and sweet romances, very much in the vein of Georgette Heyer. This story is a little bit more unlikely for the time period than her other books and as a result, I am having a hard time finishing it. There are also a couple of editing errors in both the writing and the audio production that are a challenge to get past in the beginning of the book. 1. In the first chapter the narration moves from one character and setting to another so abruptly I had to go back 3 times to figure out what was going on. There are a few of audio repeats that are small, but should have been caught.

My name is Alice Long, and I've always known I was different. When I was little I used to climb up to the highest branches of the housetree at night, and watch the starships docking at the orbital stations high above. Forty meters off the ground, watching ships 30,000 kilometers overhead, with senses that could pick out radar pings and comm chatter as easily as the ships themselves. It all seemed perfectly natural at the time.

Fun youth fiction.
Revisado: 05-30-18
I enjoyed this fast moving Sci-fi book and the world the author created for it, I look forward to a sequel. The characters are very appealing, if a bit unrealistic.
PLEASE BE AWARE! There is about an hours worth of appendixes after the end of the book, so it ended more abruptly than I expected. I was waiting for certain things that were eluded to to be wrapped up more tightly in that last hour, but it looks like I will have to wait for the sequel.
While this book stands up fairly well to adult LIGHT reading, it does somewhat dwell on the pre-pubescent awareness of the heroin's impending sexuality that made the book feel far more juvenile than it otherwise would. Not a complaint, per se, as it was obviously written with a particular audience in mind. I just think the book has the potential for more of a general audience that may be turned off by this aspect to the book. (I would love to share this with my 12 year old son, but he would be very embarrassed by certain things.) One of the things I enjoy about youth and young adult fiction is that sex is less of a focus in general. In this book in particular, having such a young heroin allowed the author to delve into a certain "sexual" aspect of this future world without going into gritty details an adult book might have gone to or focused on.

But Markie and Jesse are unable to escape the attention of their new neighbor Mrs. Saint, an irascible, elderly New European woman who takes it upon herself, along with her ragtag group of "defectives," to identify and fix the flaws in those around her, whether they want her to or not.

Horrible!
Revisado: 02-15-18
What would have made Mrs. Saint and the Defectives better?
The main character was annoying, shallow and predictably stupid. The book had the makings for a cute/fun story, which is what I expected based on the description. However, the execution was excruciatingly melodramatic.. I couldn't finish it. Narration was ok, but the writing was painful.

Over the top
Revisado: 11-07-16
A stereotypical, to the point of sounding satirical, romance story. I was brought to the point of laughing numerous times at the absurdity of the plot and dialog. The breathy, dramatic narration enhanced the feeling of it almost being a satire. I could envision it being played on SNL.
I love a charming romance in the style of Georgette Heyer and Carola Dunn. This is NOT one of those.

Knowledge is power. That would be the motto of Lander University, had it not been snatched up and used to death by others long before the school was founded. For while Lander offers a full range of courses to nearly all students, it also offers a small number of specialty classes to a very select few. Lander is home to the Hero Certification Program, a curriculum designed to develop students with superhuman capabilities, commonly known as Supers, into official Heroes.

Flat, one dimensional and insipid
Revisado: 08-19-16
Any additional comments?
One dimensional, flat characters with no charm. I can tolerate predictable if there is charm and wit, think Gorgette Heyer and Carola Dunn. This has neither. It is tedious and dull. The best thing to be said about it is that it is NOT full of sex.
