Historia
Ingrassia lost his mother, two sisters, brother, and nephew to cancer—different cancers developing at different points throughout their lives. And while highly unusual, his family is not the only one to wonder whether their heartbreak is the result of unbelievable bad luck, or if there might be another explanation. Through meticulous research and riveting storytelling, Ingrassia takes us from the 1960s—when Dr. Frederick Pei Li and Dr. Joseph Fraumeni Jr. first met, not yet knowing that they would help make a groundbreaking discovery that would affect cancer patients for decades to come.

Touching story with powerful lessons in hope.
Revisado: 07-05-24
This book provides an overview of the history of cancer diagnosis and treatments in a thoughtful way that is accessible to the non-scientific community. It sets the story context in the lives of cancer patients and their families. If you have a loved one who experienced cancer, you will cry painful tears and hopeful ones. I had to take breaks from the book, and each time it was easy to pick it back up. 🫶

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Historia
Victor Rios grew up in the ghetto of Oakland, California, in the 1980s and '90s. A former gang member and juvenile delinquent, Rios managed to escape the bleak outcome of many of his friends and earned a PhD at Berkeley and returned to his hometown to study how inner-city young Latino and African American boys develop their sense of self in the midst of crime and intense policing. Punished examines the difficult lives of these young men.

The story of why WE should do better!
Revisado: 10-06-18
Thank you Victor Rios for writing this book. We should do better by these boys. No child should hear “you won’t succeed” even one time. I will do my part to be part of the Youth Support complex.

Historia
Oliver Sacks' The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat tells the stories of individuals afflicted with fantastic perceptual and intellectual aberrations: patients who have lost their memories and with them the greater part of their pasts; who are no longer able to recognize people and common objects; who are stricken with violent tics and grimaces or who shout involuntary obscenities; whose limbs have become alien; who have been dismissed as retarded yet are gifted with uncanny artistic or mathematical talents.

I rarely stop reading a book halfway through...
- De Rusty en 09-04-15
A thoughtful exploration of the beautiful yet vulnerable complexity that is human.
Revisado: 02-10-18
The approach to the subject matter of this book was honest, reflective, and insightful. You don’t have to be a psychologist to glean the hidden gems in the stories of real people trapped in the intersection of disorder and Western culture. My take away is not to overlook the talents, skills, and expression of every person I meet. These people who cross my path may not act/react to stimuli according to my expectation, but they are genuine and worthy of respect.
The reader does a wonderful job of keeping the listener’s attention.

Historia
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

Historia
Former Broadway dancer and current agoraphobic Billy Shine has not set foot outside his apartment in almost a decade. He has glimpsed his neighbors--beautiful manicurist Rayleen, lonely old Ms. Hinman, bigoted and angry Mr. Lafferty, kind-hearted Felipe, and nine-year-old Grace and her former addict mother, Eileen. But most of them have never seen Billy. Not until Grace begins to sit outside on the building's front stoop for hours every day, inches from Billy's patio.
