Historia
In Christopher Moore's ingenious debut novel, we meet one of the most memorably mismatched pairs in the annals of literature. The good-looking one is one-hundred-year-old ex-seminarian and "roads" scholar Travis O'Hearn. The green one is Catch, a demon with a nasty habit of eating most of the people he meets.

controlled Chaos
Revisado: 03-22-23
Never frantic but always busy, never obvious but always entertaining. I never call a book a "must read" but this one I strongly recommend. Darkly fun and uplifting by turns, come and see the violence inherent in the system.

Historia
Mars is changing. Seemingly overnight the once "Red" planet is turning to gray. Something is happening, something unnatural. A team of, literally, rocket scientists figure out a way to send a probe, very fast, to Mars to determine how and why it is changing. However, when the probe is destroyed well short of the formerly red planet, it's apparent that Mars is being used as a staging ground. The only viable target for that staging ground is Earth.

Slow but different
Revisado: 03-25-22
Not the military fiction I was expecting. After a slow but enjoyable "hard" science fiction start the story rush to a somewhat anticlimactic end. I would recommend this to someone looking for alien invasion fiction that avoids the common tropes in favor of sticking with the rather interesting premise it started with. I would not recommend it to someone looking for fast paced adventure.

Historia
Eighteen-year-old Aidan Salt isn't a superhero. With his powerful (and unpredictable) telekinetic abilities, he could be one if he wanted to, but he doesn't. He's unambitious, selfish, and cowardly, and he doesn't want to have to deal with all the paperwork required to become a professional superhero. But since the money, fame, and women that come with wearing the cape are appealing, he decides to become the first supervillain the world has seen in more than 20 years: Apex Strike.

Childish
Revisado: 02-01-22
(I stopped at chapter 7) This reads like a horny 15 year old boy wrote it. Perhaps that is what the author was going for so keep that in mind. I found it off putting. The protagonist (18 years old) Blithely ignores everything and comes off more like a person playing a role playing game than a person. Chapters of his deeply ignorant actions (too shallow and short sighted to be interesting) are interspersed with exposition dumps that attempt to set the stage for something (I hope) but were just boring as you listened to them. I could have seen this as a YA novel were it not for the pointless vulgarity and general horniness that seems stuck in just to make it NOT a young adult novel. The reader does a find job but you can't give voice to characters that are written in a monotone.

Historia
Newlyweds Lina and Cain don’t make it out to their property on gorgeous Lake Tarawera as often as they’d like, so when Cain suggests they rent the house out to vacationers, Lina reluctantly agrees. While the home has been in her family for generations, they could use the extra money. And at first, Lina is amazed at how quickly guests line up, and at how much they’re willing to pay. But both Lina and Cain have been keeping secrets, secrets that won’t be put off by fresh paint or a new alarm system. And someone has been watching them.

Overall I enjoyed the story. it kept me listening and never became boring. I'd likely rate it higher but I'm less familiar with this genre than others. the reader's voice was very suitable and she did a great job with the material.

Historia
Best-selling author Mary Roach returns with a new adventure to the invisible realm we carry around inside. Roach takes us down the hatch on an unforgettable tour. The alimentary canal is classic Mary Roach terrain: The questions explored in Gulp are as taboo, in their way, as the cadavers in Stiff and every bit as surreal as the universe of zero gravity explored in Packing for Mars. Why is crunchy food so appealing? Why is it so hard to find words for flavors and smells? Why doesn’t the stomach digest itself? How much can you eat before your stomach bursts?

Historia
In this gripping, intimate memoir about health, illness, and the invisible reverberating effects of our medical system, Standefer recounts the astonishing true story of the rare diagnosis that upended her rugged life in the mountains of Wyoming and sent her tumbling into a fraught maze of cardiology units, dramatic surgeries, and slow, painful recoveries. As her life increasingly comes to revolve around the internal defibrillator freshly wired into her heart, she becomes consumed with questions about the supply chain that allows such an ostensibly miraculous device to exist.

Couldn't get into it
Revisado: 06-21-21
An interesting premise and well performed. that said it just didn't draw me in. the world seemed to be setting up for something but almost everything was presented as an exception to the rules. The "odd thing" is "odd color" but everyone knows it should be "other odd color". Here's a guy with a weird magic, a weird curse, a weird job, weird coworkers, weird relationships, and unfathomable motivations... wtf do I, as the reader, do with that information? The descriptions were vivid and the action enjoyable, but that just didn't ground the story enough to make it reliable.

Historia
Gen X Man, the latest album from comedian Erik Myers, is a laugh riot that feels like an actual riot. Erik is a foul-mouthed, whirling buzzsaw of brilliant observational comedy. He runs hotter and cuts deeper than a flaming house filled with razor blades. Cleared-eyed rage, true-to-life grievances, and commonplace annoyances, Gen X Man blasts with hilarious, fiery, righteous anger. His social commentary avoids the trappings of trendy, hot-button topics.

an enjoyable stand-up gig, the comedian's signature style was mildly grating to me but the quality and relatability of his material more than made up for that minor concern.
