Historia
One of seven children of a high-ranking government official, Loung Ung lived a privileged life in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh until the age of five. Then, in April 1975, Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge army stormed into the city, forcing Ung's family to flee and, eventually, to disperse. Loung was trained as a child soldier in a work camp for orphans, her siblings were sent to labor camps, and those who survived the horrors would not be reunited until the Khmer Rouge was destroyed.

Man's inhumanity to man. The horror and cruelty.
Revisado: 05-08-25
It's a good book but incredibly sad. I'm trying to read up on Cambodia because I'm going there soon. I know this period of the Khmer Rouge was only 4 years but so incredibly horrific. I don't regret reading this book but I almost stopped a few times.

Historia
Love and Loss in Cambodia is a memoir by Debra Groves Harman. As a teenager, she carried a heavy burden of grief and responsibility. First, her closest person died. Next, her father was critically injured in a traumatic car accident. Perhaps that explains why she's willing to leave the US and go to parts unknown--ending up in Cambodia, or more likely, she's following a traveling man she married in 1993. Memories are drawn from the '90s when the author lived in Sihanoukville and Phnom Penh. That decade was considered dangerous, with Khmer Rouge active on Route 4. When she first arrived in ...

The worst book I ever listened to to and I've listened to a lot.
Revisado: 05-03-25
Everyone involved in the production of this audio book should be embarrassed. The Ai reading was awful. The pronunciations were at times laughable and always incorrect. I listened to the whole book because I really wanted to learn about Cambodia but all I learned about was this woman's sad life. I have never written this bad a review. The reading, the pacing, the alternating speed were awful.

A haunting and beautiful memoir from a Cambodian refugee who lost her country and her family during Pol Pot's genocide in the 1970s but who finds hope by reclaiming the recipes she tasted in her mother's kitchen.

I loved this book! I learned so much on so many different subjects. History, cooking and culture. I didn't want to recommend it until I was all the way through but now I will recommend it to everyone I know.

Unfortunately, not my favorite Ann Bennet.
Revisado: 02-03-25
I have really liked every book of Ann Bennet's that i have read and I think I've read most. This one was different. It was more of a romance novel and the characters were Americans rather than Brits or Asians. The narrator had a pretty annoying American accent at times very slow and elderly sounding. In the past books, tgere were generally at least 2 scenarios and times while in this one there was only one so,IMHO, the plot wS not that interesting. I look forward to reading Ann's next book and I hope I will like it better.

Revisado: 12-27-24
The book is good. I learned some new history and I'm always interested in Asia. But the book has two sides- one the actual history and secondarily the romance laid on top of it. I am not a fan of romance novels. I don't think I've ever read one but maybe now, I have.

This is an incredible, well-written story. Well researched. A tale of a time we Westerners are kust beginning to learn about. I’m so glad that I listened and learned.

Plenty of mystery, interesting time in an interesting place. Well- crafted interplay amongst 2 time periods. I get tired of the praying, God talk but I’m learning to overlook it. I wish there was a warning about it.

Early on , I was put off by the reader’s lilting Southern accent. I wasn’t sure I could endure. But I did and it is a really good book. A bit brutal but that’s the story.

Historia
The rumblings of war in distant countries mattered little to Danny McClain. Growing up in Chicago, his world revolved around afterschool jobs, a rescued beagle, his pen pal in Holland, and the Cubs' chance to go to the World Series. Then, in December of 1941, news of the attack on Pearl Harbor hit much too close to home. In a few years, Danny found himself in the copilot seat of a B-17, stationed with the 390th Bomb Group in Framlingham, England.

The Netherlands and WW2
Revisado: 06-23-24
I liked the story very much and although I have listened to manyHF WW2 novels I learned a lot about how The Netherlands suffered at the hands of the Nazis. The only drawback was the constant references to Christianity and praying. To a non-Christian it felt like intended indoctrination and was unnecessary to the story. Beware if you don’t want to get a dose of religion with your HF.
