Historia
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

Neil Gaiman has a charming northern accent that makes this very pleasant to listen to. These are really entertaining and endearing stories, also very sad and tragic.

Historia
As President Trump’s national security advisor, John Bolton spent many of his 453 days in the room where it happened, and the facts speak for themselves. The result is one of the few White House memoirs to date by a top-level official. With almost daily access to the president, John Bolton has produced a precise rendering of his days in and around the Oval Office. What Bolton saw astonished him: a president for whom getting reelected was the only thing that mattered, even if it meant endangering or weakening the nation.

was expecting a tell-all not a litany of excuses
Revisado: 12-15-21
went into it with an open mind but the entire book is written like a defense of the author's inability to make trump more of an extremist than he already is. it is also suffused with Bolton's sad, kicked puppy feelings about how hard he tried to invade Iran and no one listened to him. poor warmonger. this was supposed to be his Cheney moment.

Historia
When the Empire threatens the galaxy’s new hope, will Han, Luke, and Leia become its last chance? When the mission is to extract a high-level rebel spy from the very heart of the Empire, Leia Organa knows the best man for the job is Han Solo - something the princess and the smuggler can finally agree on. After all, for a guy who broke into an Imperial cell block and helped destroy the Death Star, the assignment sounds simple enough.
But when Han locates the brash rebel agent, Scarlet Hark, she’s determined to stay behind enemy lines.

Pretty Good
Revisado: 07-23-19
Some parts felt a little silly considering the other work by the authors -- I was expecting the grounded, well-crafted gravitas of the The Expanse meets Star Wars, and you get some of that. Han Solo's political ruminations come off as a little underdeveloped, then again it must be hard to pull of character development working within the Star Wars canon. The character of Scarlett Hark is a great idea but comes off as more of a distraction than anything else.

Historia
Before the Great Wars and the Old Race of Man, there was a world populated by different beings: elves, demons, faeries, and the like. The Elves and the Demons constantly fought each other, until the Elves finally imprisoned them with the enchanted tree called the Ellcrys. Thousands of years later the Ellcrys still survives and still keeps the Demons imprisoned within the Spell of Forbidding, but not for much longer, the Ellcrys is dying.

a Feminist fantasy epic!
Revisado: 07-22-18
Terry Brooks is unique among fantasy authors in that his work foregrounds feminist themes, particularly this book. The main protagonist is kind of an idiot, and needs to be constantly bailed out, and, ultimately, redeemed, by very capable and nuanced female characters. At the same time, Brooks is not afraid to let his characters make mistakes, fail, and learn. When you dig into the metaphors beneath the demons, the Elcrist, and the Elfstones, the book rewards multiple readings.

Excellent
Revisado: 07-03-18
Pretty sure I reviewed this after I read it but OK whatever. Super excellent book, amazing, original take on space travel. Gravity is a central metaphor for injustice and power, and it swings in several different directions, as we learn later in the series. One of the best science fiction series ever written and James SA Corey is just cranking these out. If you're a jaded SOIAF fan like I was, Corey's series far surpasses anything George RR Martin came up with in SOIAF and continues to outpace other "series genre" writers.

Historia
The fourth book in the NYT best-selling Expanse series, Cibola Burn sees the crew of the Rocinante on a new frontier, as the rush to colonize the new planets threatens to outrun law and order and give way to war and chaos. Enter a new frontier. "An empty apartment, a missing family, that's creepy. But this is like finding a military base with no one on it. Fighters and tanks idling on the runway with no drivers. This is bad juju. Something wrong happened here. What you should do is tell everyone to leave".

Revisado: 07-03-18
Can't underscore the value that Mays brings to this series - he brings characters like Chrisjenn and Amos to life in very subtle, expertly crafted inflections that speak volumes about the histories and lives of these characters. To the point where I just can't listen to anyone else doing the narration for this series.

Classic fantasy tale with a cool twist
Revisado: 07-03-18
There's a deceptive allusion to a destroyed modern world in the Shannara series that is very satisfying, as are the weird collisions of science fiction and magic that suffuse throughout the book. Scott Brick's narration is epic in scope and he is the living voice of the druid Allanon. My only criticism is that Brooks writes his Valemen protagonists out to be irritatingly provincial and cowardly, to the point where you really kind of are hoping for them to get squished. And this comes back in the later books. Brick doesn't help by softening their voices so that they sound like Elijah Wood's equally irritating interpretation of a Hobbit. If you can get past that annoyance, and it is a minor one, then this is an amazing story in an incredible and highly under-rated series.
