A positivity injection
Revisado: 10-06-17
Keep moving and aging is a very loose theme for this book. There are lots of small stories covering a wide range of topics and he gives a very open insight into his life.
The one thing that was constant throughout this book was his positive attitude. He has a great attitude to life and I loved his narration even though you can sense a slight slurring of some words.
I’m really glad I got this book. It was entertaining and easy to listen to in the car and it has given me a better appreciation of life. Thanks Dick.

Great character. Open and Honest Biography
Revisado: 08-12-16
Firstly, I assume that you are interested in English football (soccer) to get so far as to read this review. If you are not interested in football, this book most likely won't be for you, even though Sam is a really interesting character.. Me, I love football, and I loved this book.
This audiobook lasts for over 10 hours, but it felt like no time at all. I loved listening to this. There are...
- Some great insights into his playing days. Wow, how the world has changed so quickly from his days as a player
- Stories from his roller coaster life of difficult and good times
- A few moments of laughter from some funny little stories from the training field and dressing room. I'm sure there must be hundreds more though.
- Honest opinions on other managers and characters from the world of football
- His opinions on the way the game is developing.
- Open details of his personal and family life.
I can understand why he has been a successful manager. Sam is simply a great character and he communicates in a straight forward no nonsense way, and I liked that in this book.
Just a word of warning. There is some use of strong language used in this book, as the stories from the dressing room and contract negotiations etc. get told.
The book tells the story up to the end of his West Ham days. I'm already looking forward to a Part 2 that tells of him coming out of retirement to save Sunderland from relegation and of course...he is manager of England now!

Public speaking can be terrifying. For David Nihill, the idea of standing in front of an audience was scarier than cliff jumping into a thorny pit of spiders and mothers-in-law. Without a parachute or advanced weaponry. Something had to change.
In what doesn't sound like the best plan ever, David decided to overcome his fears by pretending to be a comedian called "Irish Dave" for one full year, crashing as many comedy clubs, festivals, and shows as possible.

This WILL improve your public speaking performance
Revisado: 07-16-16
My business presentations have always been as entertaining as watching paint dry. Doing my own research I noticed that the best presenters more or less ditched powerpoint - only used pictures or graphics, and they told stories related to the picture. I've bought and read various books on incorporating story telling into presentations without seeing any improvements in the feedback for my business presentations.
Finally, this book provided all the research, tips and guidance that I had been looking for.
It doesn't provide tips on structuring your powerpoint slides. I guess after all, stand-up comics don't use powerpoint. This book is aimed at your public speaking performance, and it had lots of valuable tips and yes, some exercises to do as well.
Three of the very many tips in this book that have been invaluable for me:
- Start with the story. After this book, finding the stories from everyday life that can be used in public speaking is much more natural to me. I have my list to choose from and it is steadily growing.
- Learn to appreciate the nerves. I used to be a nervous bumbling wreck, but now I appreciate that the nerves are a good sign, that I am primed, ready for action and at the top of my game.
- Practice makes perfect. Film yourself, examine, correct, practice and improve.
There were lots of other great tips, those are just my top 3.
In addition, the book was a joy to listen to. Never boring.
The Irish accent might seem difficult to understand at the very beginning, but you soon get used to it, and I always appreciate the enthuisiasm in the voice of a narrator reading their own work.

Irony - This book needed more stories
Revisado: 05-17-16
Telling stories instead of boring bullet point facts and figures is the most effective way to communicate your message is something that is covered in numerous other books (e.g. Tell to Win by Peter Guber).
This book was different from most others on this subject because instead of just providing arguments to convince us that story telling is more engaging for audiences to hear, it tried to provide a recipe or formula for constructing good stories.
Unfortunately, it fell into its own trap by presenting the theories in list format. This book was crying out for some good stories and examples to explain why certain things (e.g. good guy meets challenges and bad guy) should be in a story.
Time and time again, I got frustrated when I heard the author was going to rattle off a list of points to consider when constructing a story.
All in all, the theory behind the story telling and details to have in a story were well thought out, sensible and common sense. But, I got bored by the robotic narration and the lack of stories and examples that are required if you are to grasp theories in an audiobook. After finishing the book, it is difficult for me to find any take-away points or theories that are really memorable.
Unbelievably ironic that a book to help you communicate with stories instead of lists uses far more lists than stories.

Covers a very wide range of negotiation theories and principles.
It is very well presented. Professor Seth Freeman does a good job of keeping the listener engaged in each lecture which lasts approx 30 mins.
This course is suitable for absolutely everyone as it covers general negotiating principles suitable for everything we deal with in life;- family/relationship issues, salary, contracts at work etc..
There are some similarities with this course and the Great Course The Art of Conflict Management by Professor Michael Dues. I'd recommend them both :-)

A Great Source of Information
Revisado: 01-18-16
A great lecturer. He was one of my favorites in The Great Course - Critical Business Skills for Success. He combines theory with case studies and examples to make it easy to understand and enjoyable to listen to. Nearly every lecture also provides references to other studies or books that can be useful for those who want to dig even deeper into details.
Each lecture is about 30 min, which is perfect if you want to start/stop and take one lecture per day.
Each lecture also has a little summary with take-away points at the end.
Fantastic value for one credit

Revisado: 01-08-16
Where does Critical Business Skills for Success rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Right up there at the top
What other book might you compare Critical Business Skills for Success to and why?
The Personal MBA Josh Kaufman. Gives lots of information over a wide range of business topics with some references of where to get more detailed information if interested in getting more details on particular skills
What about the narrators’s performance did you like?
Some lecturers were even better than others, but general standard was very high.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, it is far too long for that.It is probably up to personal preferences, but I guess the best approach is to take one lecture per day, skim read the pdf in advance, then listen to the audio for that lecture.Personally. I just listened and apart from the financial accounting sections that contained lots of figures and formulas, I felt that I learned lots just by listening.
Any additional comments?
Thanks audible. All of this great knowledge for one credit. What a bargain.

Eye Opener
Revisado: 01-08-16
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Definitely. It will most likely change their diet, lifestyle, quality of life and help them live healthier for longer
What was one of the most memorable moments of Grain Brain?
Difficult to pick out one memorable moment. There were many eye opening moments.
Which character – as performed by Peter Ganim – was your favorite?
This was not a character book. In general, the narration was easy to listen to and understand.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Too long for that, but I found myself looking forward to finishing work so that I could get some free time to get back to this book.
Any additional comments?
Some technical medical information but it was well explained, and relatively easy to understand. My health and energy levels have changed for the better after this book.
One big thing I now do after reading this book is look at food and ask myself the question...
Is this something natural that our cavemen ancestors would have eaten?
But, having said that, this is NOT a paleo diet book, it is so much more.

Historia
The future of our society depends on our gifted children - the population in which we’ll find our next Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, or Virginia Woolf. Yet the gifts and talents of some of our most brilliant kids may never be recognized because these children fall into a group known as twice exceptional, or "2e". Twice exceptional kids are both gifted and diagnosed with a disability - often ADHD or an Autism Spectrum Disorder - leading teachers and parents to overlook the child’s talents and focus solely on his weaknesses. Too often, these children get lost in a cycle of chasing diagnostic labels and are never given the tools to fully realize their potential.

Boring
Revisado: 12-14-15
This was one of very few instances where I didn,t finish a book. I stuck it out for a long time but still didn't get past the complaints about present day diagnosis and medication to get to any tips and useful information on how to actually be a better parent for your autistic child.
Narration was terrible, and I'm sure that ruined my experience. Vanessa should be reading sleazy sexual material instead of books on parenting.
This book has credited "with Temple Grandin". I found her books Thinking in Pictures and The Way I See It to be vastly more helpful and practical for an every day parent.

I really enjoyed this book.
Each chapter describes an experiment that documents "predictably irrational" human behaviour. When each piece of research is described, you can "predict" fairly accurately the findings before you are given the results, but none the less, the results are fascinating.
What I also liked was the authors' attempt to explain the reasoning behind the behaviour and try to give us some tips and tools to avoid behaving "irrationally".
I also enjoyed the narration. A nice posh easy to understand voice that captured the moments of irony and sarcasm perfectly.
