Historia
‘Women can be heroes, too’. When twenty-year-old nursing student, Frances “Frankie” McGrath, hears these unexpected words, it is a revelation. Raised on California’s idyllic Coronado Island and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing, being a good girl. But in 1965 the world is changing, and she suddenly imagines a different path for her life. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she impulsively joins the Army Nurses Corps and follows his path.

FANTASTIC! One of the best ! Loved it!
Revisado: 09-09-24
An extremely powerful story of Frankie, a young lady of privilege who naively decides to serve in the Vietnam War as a nurse to become a War Hero (in her dads eyes'). Her quick training before leaving did not prepare her for what she endures during war, neither did her frivolous upbringing. But it's when she returns home and has to adjust to a world transformed, to herself changed that this book really caught me. I found myself researching the web to learn more about Vietnam war and was truly impressed with the deep research done by Kristin Hannah and by how profoundly she describes the mental suffering of those who face such a traumatic experience. ( check this when you hit part 2 of this book https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guONM5ybm6E) I just loved this book and could not stop reading till was over. A must read. Now!

Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town where she grew up—she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. And when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life seems too good to be true.

Abuse from different perspectives
Revisado: 09-03-24
Extremely interesting to see abuse from both sides, the kid of an abusive parent and the wife of one. Authors note at the end is very good.
But a bit too sugary and too fairy tale for my taste.
Why does abuse has to come wrapped in such a fairy tale Mr Perfect story? To me this was not necessary. But still a very clever book!

Historia
If it weren’t for Emma Johnson, Caryn Johnson would have never become Whoopi Goldberg. Emma gave her children the loving care and wisdom they needed to succeed in life, always encouraging them to be true to themselves. When Whoopi lost her mother in 2010—and then her older brother, Clyde, five years later—she felt deeply alone; the only people who truly knew her were gone. Emma raised her children not just to survive, but to thrive. In this intimate and heartfelt memoir, Whoopi shares many of the deeply personal stories of their lives together for the first time.

Soo touching to come to know Whoopi’ story and learn with her mother’ s wisdom. So happy that Whoppi decided to share so openly her life- the good and bad- and to give us loads of advice on how to appreciate life and loved ones. Go for it!

Historia
Behind the tall, foreboding gates of a commune in Brazil, Daniella Mestyanek Young was raised in the religious cult The Children of God, also known as The Family, as the daughter of high-ranking members. Her great-grandmother donated land for one of The Family’s first communes in Texas. Her mother, at thirteen, was forced to marry the leader and served as his secretary for many years. Beholden to The Family’s strict rules, Daniella suffers physical, emotional, and sexual abuse—masked as godly discipline and divine love—and is forbidden from getting a traditional education.

What a mindblowing story!
Revisado: 01-10-24
Very well narrated, Daniella does an amazing job recounting her painful experience growing up in The Children’s of God. After leaving she ends up joining another cult- the army.
The book is a wakeup call to cult mentality, gender inequality, abuse. Amust read

What a waste of time!!
Revisado: 11-03-23
Finding the right words to say how disappointing this book was is hard. Full of wishy washy sentimental mysticism the book quotes things like “love has no labels”, “division only leads to division” and bla bla while depicting women as either prostitutes, uneducated housewives and brothel owners. Even if intention was to portrait women that were victims of patriarchal dominance the author ends up by reinforcing gender inequality mixing sacred words and pretty sentences with ridiculous passages such as “I dusted and cleaned my husband books but I was to stay away- for I’m not worthy or capable of reading them. .. or “only some girls need education”. The book tries to make sufism the new sexy, and falls miserably. The story line goes like a soup opera that moves incredibly slowly, full of cliches.. What a waste of time.

I absolutely strongly suggest this book for everyone.
This is the second book by Chimamanda I read.
Her ability to tell a story, narrate historic events and undress the human soul all together is profoundly intense.
Narrator did an amazing job!

I was expecting to listen to the story of Marie Curie, of her achievements, etc since she is one of the most distinguished woman in science.
But this book is mostly about her romance w Pierre Curie. Its ok..
But there is so much more to talk about her..
