So Many Commercials
Revisado: 02-15-25
I just stopped it with three minutes left. I can’t handle anymore commercials. It seemed like it was 50/50 podcast:commercials though I’m sure that’s probably a bit of an exaggeration—but it felt like it.
If the commercials weren’t bad enough, the one podcaster is cast as the moron and asks the most idiotic questions (think 4th grade questions) and the other podcaster is cast as the know-it-all, but she only knows what she has read. She seems incapable of analyzing or producing any original thought or theories. I’m an avid audiobook listener, but I’m new to podcasts. I’m hoping that this isn’t what they are all like. Hopefully, there’s one good true crime series.

Male Narrator is Pompous and Boisterous
Revisado: 01-23-25
He is so loud. He’s the guy at the party that demands all of the attention. He comes across as very full of himself. In addition to his demonstrative demeanor, he throws around psychiatric diagnoses like marshmallows in lucky charms—incorrectly I will add. Furthermore, I really question a lot of their supposition in regard to motivations of suspects in this series. I know that I probably sound pompous right now myself, these are FBI profilers (still, I’m a licensed professional that specializes in diagnostics and assessment). Now the woman, she’s a lot easier to listen to, and I feel like her assessment skills are better, though she often has to fight to get a word in, she has disagreed with/corrected him at times. I don’t know what either of their background is (educationally speaking), but we shouldn’t throw around diagnoses, especially when representing yourself as a professional, or as an authority on the subject matter. It’s interesting material (I love analyzing the human mind), but I could do without his theatrics.

Audio Malfunctions

It was an interesting story. It definitely kept my attention more than most. The narrators were very good but the audio would skip/repeat in spots, sometimes large chunks.

Just Annoying
Revisado: 11-29-24
It was so long! And it was stereotypical high school girls (narrator was zero help) that yapped every single thought the character had. I’ve been listening for hours and what could’ve been said in 45 minutes has taken hours. I just looked to see how much time was and it was 7 hours and something. Ummm no. I used to force myself to finish books, but I’ve learned my lesson.
Me now going to look to see how old this author is, because he spends a lot of time writing about high school girls. -.-

It was A Very Solid Listen
Revisado: 10-05-24
It was really good. I like Robert Dugoni. Performance received 4 stars because of the poor rendition of an English accent. This was only a small portion of the book, so not a deal breaker. It had good charter development and a multifaceted storyline. I’d recommend it.

THESE ARE NOT IN ORDER!!
Revisado: 07-22-24
I was really excited to get 3 books for the price of one, but after listening to the first book (Echo Park), I began listening to The Narrows. I quickly realized that things were disjointed. It seemed like Echo Park would come after The Narrows. According to Google (the Sensei of all things)… the books are out of order and it’s missing 1!
This trilogy goes: The Narrows— book 2, The Closers (NOT INCLUDED), Echo Park— book 1, then The Overlook—book 3. FYI: These aren’t referencing the totality of the Bosch series only this trilogy… in all, they all are appropriately in the middle).
Why would you do this to the reader? I understand they can be stand alone books, but series are better in order. Then you don’t include a middle one in your trilogy?
Lastly, the audio skips like a scratched cd. It did it maybe a dozen or so times in Echo Park (not yet in The Narrows). It recovers itself, but that was the reason for Performance only getting 4 stars. The narrator is great. I also didn’t care for the theme music between scenes.

The Audio is Dreaaaadful!
Revisado: 06-21-24
I was really excited to try a book by this author. I’ve always heard great things. All the characters are extremely shallow. The narrator portrays one as a California surfer dude, the computer sounds like Rosie from the Jetson’s or the computer from the original Star Trek, and, we’ve got a whiny bimbo. They’re exponentially overdone and exaggerated. The voices deplete the quality of the characters. Then, these women have no minds for themselves and even less ability to turn away an erect penis— consequences be damned. I have 4 hours left and hate it so much I don’t think I can finish it.

Now Let Us Pray
Revisado: 02-10-24
The dedication of the book should clue you in. I go through several audiobooks a week and just tried to let this one play out as I did housework or built furniture, but it was OVER THE TOP. I feel like people should be warned or market this in the religious books section. It might be a mystery, but with 7+ hours left I just can’t stomach anymore. I’m not criticizing the author—really, I just feel like you need to be fair to your audience. Market the book as a Christian novel and you’ll get tons of buyers that love your book, but I feel like they were hoping to snag mystery thrill seekers as a way to proselytize. The clearly had religious themes that were forced down your throat. People that don’t ascribe to the author’s beliefs are likely to be put off by the bigoted views portrayed in this book.

Emma Frederick bolts upright in bed, pulse racing. It must be a bad dream. Except it’s not. Crrrrrreeeeeeeeaaaaaaakkkkkkk. The sound of the loose step sends her body into overdrive, and she rushes for the secret room behind the wall. The screech of old hinges echoes through the house as he enters her bedroom. He starts whistling. Three blind mice. Three blind mice. She slaps a hand over her mouth, stifling her scream. He’s coming for her, but that can’t be. She killed him last month.

A little far fetched
Revisado: 01-22-23
Overall it’s not bad. Main character is likable. Since the setting is New Orleans, I wish the narration was authentic. The narrator does a good job, but in no way reflects the “Nawlins” drawl. I also subtracted a star for the easy way out ending, I was hoping for something better, but at least there was a little (though unpredictable) twist.

BRAVO!! True Suspense Novel
Revisado: 01-21-23
This is the first true suspense novel I’ve gone through in probably the last 100 in the same genre. It was wonderful to go through the book without the foregone knowledge of who the suspect was. It mirrored a true police investigation where different suspects are thoroughly pursued and the reader can easily imagine each being guilty of the crime. Each character had a good mixture of strengths and flaws which only lent to their credibility and authenticity. Equally enjoyable was the inclusion of both male and female main characters that weren’t the stereotypical cop and FBI agent that are characters in a “suspense” novel as a mere guise for a romance book.
I subtracted one star (begrudgingly) from the narrator, as I would’ve preferred a Swedish accent throughout the book rather than in just the pronunciation of names and places (but their pronunciation was authentic).
The three best suspense novels I’ve read in a long time have been from Swede authors… I think they are on to something.
