much better pacing than the first book.
Revisado: 12-03-22
Much better pacing than the first book. The surges are pretty hokey though. The first ones revealed are the best. Unfortunately death ia of no consequence in this world either. By the end of the story two characters have been resurected.

Historia
William Gibson is known primarily as a novelist, with his work ranging from his groundbreaking first novel, Neuromancer, to his more recent contemporary best sellers Pattern Recognition, Spook Country, and Zero History. During those nearly 30 years, though, Gibson has been sought out by widely varying publications for his insights into contemporary culture.

A nice look under the hood of William Gibson's min
Revisado: 10-24-22
I've just finished all of William Gibson's published works as of October 2022. I left this one for last. I especially enjoyed his then contemporary writtings of his impressions of the early Internet, and several major cities including New York, London, Singapore and of course Tokyo and Japan.

Historia
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

The book is a slow roll for the first 25 hours but most everything that isn't set up for future books is explained by the end. Stick with it. It gets better and better. The two narrators are very good too.

Historia
The Difference Engine is an alternate history novel by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling. It is a prime example of the steampunk sub-genre; It posits a Victorian Britain in which great technological and social change has occurred after entrepreneurial inventor Charles Babbage succeeded in his ambition to build a mechanical computer called Engines. The fierce summer heat and pollution have driven the ruling class out of London and the resulting anarchy allows technology-hating Luddites to challenge the intellectual elite.

Wow! What a beautiful world
Revisado: 09-16-22
WOW! Gibson brushes this book off in interviews but it is such a jem! How did two American authors manage to translate American English into such intricate 1850's Queens English? And "the great stink" I had never heard of it before now. What a great backdrop for plotting and conspiracy. This story has the only detailed sex scene in all of Gibson's novels. I'll have to check out Sterling's work soon. This is one of Gibson's best works.

Historia
Verity Jane, gifted app whisperer, takes a job as the beta tester for a new product: a digital assistant, accessed through a pair of ordinary-looking glasses. "Eunice", the disarmingly human AI in the glasses, manifests a face, a fragmentary past, and a canny grasp of combat strategy. Realizing that her cryptic new employers don’t yet know how powerful and valuable Eunice is, Verity instinctively decides that it’s best they don’t.

Easier to follow than the Periphiral but political
Revisado: 07-11-22
This book was easier to follow than the peripheral but the magical capabilities of the AI and tech in general trips my uncanny valley receptors. This book was among Gibsons most rose colored of future worlds but I really don't like where sci fi is going in general. Gibson barely camoflages his feelings about the Trump v. Clinton election and Star Trek Discovery gave Stacy Abrams a role recently. Traditionally Sci Fi makes political stances on issues but stops short of endorsing or condemning politicians. I don't like that that high minded decorum is disappearing. Sci Fi is alienating a lot of people they would otherwise reach. Its going further as well in realms of inclusivity, now making stands with fully gendered and racialized AI. Again these consepts were addressed better in ages past, using the genre to make positions more abstract and palatable to all readers.

Where Flynne and her brother, Burton, live, jobs outside the drug business are rare. Fortunately, Burton has his veteran's benefits, for neural damage he suffered from implants during his time in the USMC's elite Haptic Recon force. Then one night Burton has to go out, but there's a job he's supposed to do - a job Flynne didn't know he had. Beta-testing part of a new game, he tells her.

Confusing at first...
Revisado: 07-08-22
Gibson intentionally drops the reader right in to all his worlds. This one was too sketch and confusing at first then again at the end. I do like how he strives to show how people interact with technology on an everyday level. The concepts here are not new but the way he interplays them with character driven narratives is the draw. This isn't his best work but it is still a great story.

Historia
Neal Stephenson is a blazing new force on the sci-fi scene. With the groundbreaking cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, he has "vaulted onto the literary stage." It weaves virtual reality, Sumerian myth, and just about everything in between with a cool, hip cybersensibility - in short, it is the gigathriller of the information age.

A little harsh, hearing Cyberpunk satirized
Revisado: 06-22-22
I've been taking William Gibson's novels inseries. I took a break for this. It was grating, hearing, in the audiobook, Gibson's genre satirized llike this. Still, the faux historical concepts (I did look them up - no such things as nam shuds) and the expositinal elements were compeling but everything else, although well described, were fantastical elements bolted on to a satriracle storyline. However, the voice actor did a superlative job at delivering the story. Its worth the audiobook just to hear him perform it.

Gibson's weakest story yet.
Revisado: 05-25-22
I've been taking Gibson's novels in order of release. Oddly, I thought Pattern recognition was his best because of the primary heroine and the way he pulled 9/11 together in a way that held meaning in 2022 post pandemic. This one however lacks strong direction or characters and the performance is a baratone bland with poor accents. Gibson continues to attempt and fail at writing latino characters and cultures.

Revisado: 05-13-22
Its 2022, I've been reading or listening to Gibson's books for the past decade, trying to understand the primary author, my fantasy fictional author, who helped create me, and thereby recover something of myself. This, so far, has been his best because it was, at the time, a contemporary story that helped me place myself in a time when nothing else could and after this pandemic, when also nothingnelse has. I very deeply enjoy Gibson's comentary on culture and society, especially this time free of the artifice of the distant tomorrowland that never was. A+

Revisado: 04-24-22
Very thorough but repetitive it reminds me of "Silent Spring" or "How the Other Half Lives" both milestones in social activism in their own right and both very repetitive. But you owe it to yourself, your family and your coubtry to read all of it. If the Trumpies are in a cult and need to be deprogrammed then so do the wokies who believe in violating everyone to force vaccinations.
