When Harry Met Sally for gamer millennials
Revisado: 06-28-23
When Harry Met Sally for gamer millennials, in the best way possible. Some of the dialogue was a bit grating but overall a good read.

Fantastic Characters, Story, and Performance
Revisado: 08-17-22
I absolutely LOVED this book. Maberry's writing is phenomenal. World building and characters established here in book 1. Ray Porter's performance was also noteworthy.

A shadow has fallen over the Tressian Republic. Ruling families - once protectors of justice and democracy - now plot against one another with sharp words and sharper knives. Blinded by ambition, they remain heedless of the threat posed by the invading armies of the Hadari Empire. Yet as Tressia falls, heroes rise. Very Similar to ASOIAF, More Magic
Revisado: 03-02-20
Legacy of Ash is absolutely brilliant, and there are undeniable comparisons to be made with ASOIAF, both in the characters, themselves, and the overarching story.
Yet somehow, it ends up being somewhat different than Game of Thrones. It's a bit heavier handed on the magic (which I personally enjoyed), and the story remains hard to put down, despite being one of the heftier reads.
With interesting twists and turns, brilliant characters, and a well-created world, Legacy of Ash is one of the more memorable fantasy epics in recent memory.

Bland
Revisado: 02-06-20
The narrator was the highlight of this audiobook, as the story was middling, at best. Characters were well-developed, but the overall story felt a bit bland and uninspired. After listening, I feel like it just sort of exists without any reason.

Historia
"You can be beautiful, even more beautiful than before." This is the seductive promise of Dr. Nzinga’s clinic, where anyone can get their lips thinned, their skin bleached, and their nose narrowed. A complete demelanization will liberate you from the confines of being born in a Black body - if you can afford it. In this near-future Southern city plagued by fenced-in ghettos and police violence, more and more residents are turning to this experimental medical procedure. Like any father, our narrator just wants the best for his son, Nigel, a biracial boy.

I absolutely loved both the story and Suzy Jackson's narration of it. Great new characters with a continuation of the story that doesn't just feel like more of the same. Can't wait for the next book!

It got cringy
Revisado: 12-13-19
As the series progressed, things went slightly downhill for Nora Roberts' post-apoc trilogy. It was still a "good" story through Book 2, but Book 3 here took a sharper turn downward to the point where it was tough to finish.
While the overall story of the One is interesting, Book 3 takes an odd turn to focus on her relationships. That's not a problem on its own, really, but when her relationships are told through cringy dialogue, and entirely cliche interactions, as well as awkward-sounding magic chants, it made the book incredibly tough to finish. The dialogue was jarring enough to remove me from the overall story, and what started as an interestingly-designed world became more of a love story of two, not the powers of The One.
