Historia
Last summer, The New Yorker published chef Anthony Bourdain's shocking, "Don't Eat Before Reading This." Now, the author uses the same "take-no-prisoners" attitude in his deliciously funny and shockingly delectable audiobook, sure to delight gourmands and philistines alike.

The agony and the ecstasy
Revisado: 05-30-22
The performance is outstanding. The story is compelling: Once started, I looked forward to listening to most chapters. A smaller number were harder, more trying listens; usually when Tony was detailing the underbelly of the profession and the lives of some of his — according to Tony — unsavory fellow travelers. I also sought signs of the tragic loss yet to come of this gifted, brilliant man and wondered at times if he had uttered dark sentiments that might have deepened and expanded over the next 20 years. But in truth had I not known of his death in 2018 I would have concluded: here is an artist following his calling, with heart and soul, muscle and sinew, who loves his work and how food if well respected and prepared would continue to sustain him.

Historia
Shimon Peres was in his early 20s when he first met David Ben-Gurion. Although the state that Ben-Gurion would lead through war and peace had not yet declared its precarious independence, the "Old Man", as he was called even then, was already a mythic figure. Peres, who came of age in the cabinets of Ben-Gurion, is uniquely placed to evoke this figure of stirring contradictions - a prophetic visionary and a canny pragmatist who early grasped the necessity of compromise for national survival.

Fascinating and monumental leader
Revisado: 04-28-22
PM Peres presents the complex history of the founding of the state of Israel very well. Because the history of the fruition of the state has a multitude of personalities, organizations, governments I would have hoped for more clarity; periodically taking a step back from the details and “painting”with broad strokes. The “notes” and interviews with David Landau try to accomplish this; I found these approaches partially successful. I enjoyed Shimon’s reflections on the philosophy of BG vs other Israeli leaders; and his overview/summation of key events in the life of the state and from the perspective of BG. Mr. Prichard has a challenge; straight narrative work; absent opportunities to take on accents, portraying interesting characteristics, etc. so the narration tends to come across in monotone. As one interested in Israel’s history and it’s founding father I am glad I listened and learned a lot from PM Peres.

Historia
A small southern town in the 1960s. A musician found dead on the highway. It’s no surprise when white detectives arrest a black man for the murder. What is a surprise is that the black man - Virgil Tibbs - is not the killer but a skilled homicide detective, passing through racially tense Wells, South Carolina, on his way back to California. Even more surprising, Wells’s new police chief recruits Tibbs to help with the investigation.

Powerful story beautifully crafted and narrated
Revisado: 04-24-22
I have watched Rod Steiger and Sidney Poitier in their incomparably brilliant performances in the 1967 movie that I love and return to often. Now I have discovered the novel that inspired this art for the screen; and it is a carefully crafted and elegantly written story that illuminates the south still locked in the prison of crippling Jim Crow culture. The pain of this era is somewhat softened by white men forced to acknowledge their bigotry although the catalyst for the revelatory soul searching is a human being of exceptional integrity sensitivity courage and intelligence. As Bill Gillespie expressed: “A credit to the human race.” Just as I watch the movie a few times each year, I shall accord this Audible performance the same devotion.

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

I loved this book. Wonderfully detailed. Eye witness accounts painstakingly collected and sewn together seamlessly. Writing is majestic. Simon Preeble is fantastic. His sound portraits are compelling authentic masterful. I think Sir Ernest would approve.
