Mixed bag, in a good way

I like the variety of characters and species. They are definitely flawed people, but trying. The emotional angst is a bit too much for my taste, but it’s nice to have characters that seem like they will never be OP. There is a sense of reality that is achieved.

Solid, but not for me.

This is definitely for a younger audience. I enjoyed the story for what is was; but I have no desire to continue on.

A solid entry

A delightful romp with Penric and Desdemona, told by a master writer and narrator.

Other people have mentioned that this book feels like an ending. The book doesn’t have that vibe at all, more that some plot threads were picked back up and left in less tenuous spot.

Bujold repeatedly brings up the time Penric burned a warf and boats. This tale is much less nail biting. Penric feels more middle aged now, and goes on a more sedate adventure.

I hope we get to see Penric at his last, when Des goes to her next adventure. This was a nice benchmark in their lives.

A high caliber disappointment

After the initial set-up, the plot became more predictable than a Scooby-do episode. The writing and narration were excellent, like past stories. Penric and Desdemona were still engaging.

Solid Entry

It isn’t a new story. Now was there anything unique or new added to the tale or to the main characters. Nevertheless, it was well written and I enjoyed the listen. I will likely re-listen to it someday down the road.

Writing as solid and engrossing as is expected from Bujold. When you get to the end you realize that all that happened was SPOILER



Ekaterine finds some people living in the radioactive woods. With lots of details.

Some good thoughts but incomplete

The interesting ideas are about how how God works in the world with imperfect people and also with Saul-like people. It explores the implications of this fact and how it is difficult to differentiate between the two types, (middle part of the book). These interesting thoughts are surrounded by whimsy and speculation (but it is a tale).

The David v Absalom talks about how David fled, but totally ignores the fact that David raises an army and fought Absalom. Book explored complex ideas about Gods will with man and explores some knots, but skips the parts where men act. Makes you think yes, but somewhat unsatisfying.

Narrator is good.
