Historia
Thirty-two-year-old Jess Abbot has lost everything: her job, her apartment, and - most heart-wrenching - her eight-year-old son, Chance, to a tragic accident. Haunted by memories and grief, Jess packs what’s left and heads for the small mountain town of Pine Lake, where she takes a position as caregiver to an eccentric old woman. A rumored clairvoyant, Lucy is strange but welcoming and immediately intuits Jess as a “loose end” in need of closure. But Jess isn’t the only guest in Lucy’s large Victorian home.

Sometimes exasperating
Revisado: 07-21-20
I liked the story overall but at times I was really frustrated and exasperated at Lucy's vagueness. She said "Ask a question." and then "Now THAT's the right question!" but she never directly answered the question, or indeed, any question. Jess got kind of exasperating too because all she wanted to do was turn Star over to authorities because "somebody must be missing her," even tho Star said her mother and father were dead. Then Jess thought the authorities could find Star the loving home she deserved with a loving mother and father. I doubt a loving home is suddenly going to turn up when Star's foster home experiences had been so dismal. By the llast part of the book, I just wanted everybody to figure it all out already and get on with it.

Historia
Josie Bianci was killed years ago on a train during a terrorist attack. Gone forever. It’s what her sister, Kit, an ER doctor in Santa Cruz, has always believed. Yet all it takes is a few heart-wrenching seconds to upend Kit’s world. Live coverage of a club fire in Auckland has captured the image of a woman stumbling through the smoke and debris. Her resemblance to Josie is unbelievable. And unmistakable. With it comes a flood of emotions - grief, loss, and anger - that Kit finally has a chance to put to rest: by finding the sister who’s been living a lie.

Just OK
Revisado: 01-11-20
Didnt really care for the performers. Josie had a very strange accent. Is became Uz, kidding became kudding. Very distracting. Kind of repetitious when everybody was dwelling on their past miseries over and over. The ending was pretty melodramatic too. I listened to the whole thing but didnt love it.

Revisado: 09-15-19
This was a great book! I don't often say that about any book but this one was truly original. Using the AI version of Abby as narrator was a phenomenal angle and the ending was a total surprise.
I always enjoy Saskia Maarleveld as a narrator too. I've listened to many books just because she was the reader. Highly recommend.

Alexandra Hunter is pretty much alone in the world - except for her matchmaking boss and contrary friend, Mary. After a "Date with the Living Dead" and a brush with executive espionage, she's focused on climbing the corporate ladder. Romance just isn't worth the effort. Then enigmatic playboy Scott Falconer comes along in cowboy boots and a tuxedo to cut the rungs out from under her.

Very slow paced!
Revisado: 04-02-19
Other reviewers have touched on some of the many issues with this book. Some of my pet peeves with it have already been mentioned - excruciatingly slow paced, extremely annoying characters in the 2050's, hours of repetition and people chasing other people, unable to find them. It's too bad the author couldn't have envisioned some sort of personal communication device that each character carried, like our cell phones. It would have easily cut off about 3 hours of the book, waiting for phone calls, full phone lines so they couldn't get through, not knowing where people were - some they never did find!
My biggest issue happens at the outset. These people of 2050 had the ability to go back in time but they were totally irresponsible about it. They send a woman back to the middle ages (in the middle of winter and a mini ice age) and then EVERY SINGLE PERSON who knows how to get her back goes on Christmas vacation and is somewhere they can't be found or reached. Don't you think they would leave a tech or two at the college to handle emergencies and monitor the device that sent her back? Everybody just walked away and went on vacation?
Then there is the virus that Kivren gets the day she goes back. She is so near death she receives the last rights but then 3-4 days later she is fully recovered and acting as nursemaid to the 2 little girls. Her miraculous recovery took place despite having no access to anything remotely resembling modern medicine and living in a freezing cold manor. All the while in the present day, the only man apparently who can run the time travel equipment is near death from the same virus for weeks, despite modern day medicines and others are dropping like flies, dying of it. How did Kivren recover so quickly?
The reason I gave it even 3 stars was for the historical detail. The parts of the story in the past were better and When they finally got to the black death, it got interesting. The modern day parts were so irritating I skipped through some of it, which I rarely do. I did finish it, which I guess merits 3 stars. The performance was good anyway.
Just beware, this book may irritate the life out of you!

Totally Depressing had to return
Revisado: 03-18-19
I love the WWII genre and I know this story did happen to people in the aftermath of the war but to me it was so totally depressing I couldn't get past the first few chapters. The narrator was good when the characters were speaking, but the narrative part was overly dramatic.
I really like this author and have enjoyed her other books. This one was just too depressing for me.

Historia
It’s always been easier for Cara Hargraves to bury herself in the past than confront the present, which is why working with a gruff but brilliant antiques dealer is perfect. While clearing out an estate, she pries open an old tin that holds the relics of a lost relationship: among the treasures, a World War II-era diary and a photograph of a young woman in uniform. Eager to find the author of the hauntingly beautiful, unfinished diary, Cara digs into this soldier’s life, but soon realizes she may not have been ready for the stark reality of wartime London she finds....

Good Story
Revisado: 03-16-19
I love World War II fiction and this one didnt disappoint. The present day romance and the mystery of Louise's diary was interwoven with Louise's story of being an Ack Ack bomber spotter in London. Louise discovered her strengths thro her work. it was a good slice of British history and women's contributions to it.

Could have done without the commentary
Revisado: 12-17-18
The story itself and the narrator were good, although Elizabeth and 7 year old Maria sounded like old ladies having a man try and narrate them. I could tell from some of the rather preachy passages that the author was trying to relate what happened in Nazi Germany to America today. I could have overlooked it and still enjoyed the story but, no, at the end she had to plainly spell it out for us. If I'd wanted politics I'd have chosen a political book. Her commentary at the end ruined a fairly decent book for me.
