Science starts to get interesting when things don't make sense. Science's best-kept secret is that there are experimental results and reliable data that the most brilliant scientists can neither explain nor dismiss. If history is any precedent, we should look to today's inexplicable results to forecast the future of science. Michael Brooks heads to the scientific frontier to meet 13 modern-day anomalies and discover tomorrow's breakthroughs.

Absolutely fascinating

This has been one of my favorite listens. I have listened to every chapter multiple times and get something new out of each listening. It is content dense, but so interesting.

A fascinating account of an Army captain's unusual path through some of the most legendary seats of learning straight into a brutal fight with Al Qaeda in Afghanistan, The Unforgiving Minute is, above all, an unforgettable portrait of a young soldier grappling with the weight of his hard-earned knowledge while coming to grips with becoming a man.

Highly recommended
Revisado: 02-15-10
First off, the author makes me feel like a serious underachiever. Secondly, he gives very good descriptions of life at West Point, Ranger training, Airborne training, being a Rhodes Scholar, and life as a young officer at war time.
One more good book to add to your military history books.

When Donovan Campbell's platoon deployed to Ramadi in the spring of 2004, they believed they'd be spending most of their time building schools, training police, and making friends with the citizens. But shortly after arriving, when Campbell awoke to the chilling cry of "Jihad, Jihad, Jihad!" echoing from minaret to minaret across the city, he knew they had an altogether different situation on their hands.

Well worth the listen
Revisado: 02-04-10
If you are not crying by the end of this book, you are not human. If you do not have a deeper respect for the people that volunteer for the Armed Services, you have no soul. This book was well-written and well-read. A good description of the day-to-day activities of marines serving in Iraq. The lieutenant who wrote this book did what all good officers do, he gave full credit to his men for what went well, and took full credit for what went wrong.

Historia
When Elspeth Noblin dies of cancer, she leaves her London apartment to her twin nieces, Julia and Valentina. These two American girls never met their English aunt; they only knew that their mother, too, was a twin, and Elspeth her sister. Julia and Valentina are semi-normal American teenagers - with seemingly little interest in college, finding jobs, or anything outside their cozy home in the suburbs of Chicago, and with an abnormally intense attachment to one another.

a disappointment
Revisado: 01-21-10
I got this book because I really enjoyed the Time Travelers Wife. This book was a disappointment. A lot goes on in the book that really makes no sense. Although I highly recommend the Time Travelers Wife, I cannot in good conscience recommend this book.

Historia
Tender Branson, the last surviving member of the so-called Creedish Death Cult, is dictating his life story into the flight recorder of Flight 2039, cruising on autopilot at 39,000 feet somewhere over the Pacific Ocean. He is all alone in the airplane, which will crash shortly into the vast Australian outback. But before it does, he will unfold the tale of his journey from an obedient Creedish child and humble domestic servant to an ultra-buffed, steroid-and-collagen-packed media messiah.

Not your typical book, but very entertaining. I found myself listening to it whenever I could. Full of interesting, but logical twists and turns. A worthy listen.

Historia
David Rakoff's best-selling collection of autobiographical essays, Fraud, established him as one of today's funniest and most insightful writers. Now, in Don't Get Too Comfortable, Rakoff moves from the personal to the public, journeying into the land of unchecked plenty that is contemporary America. Rarely have greed, vanity, selfishness, and vapidity been so mercilessly and wittily skewered.

How many actually listened/read the book?
Revisado: 11-03-05
One reviewer writes "Liberal, gay", as if this is enough to tell one all one needs to know about why the book is bad. Personally, I find liberals a much more decent and pleasant lot than conservatives. I do not care one wit about a person's sexual orientation, as long as they understand the word "no". The author is writing about the decadence of America. And it is true. Our society has gotten to the point where we have to create stress and difficulties for entertainment (Survivor, the Apprentice, the list goes on), and we have a great proportion of our society overweight. We drive gas guzzlers and state that it is our right.
Is it wrong to fault us for this? I think not. If you spend any time in other countries, you quickly realize how spoiled American's are, and how we feel it is our right, not a privilege.
This book is not for all, and neither are Ann Coulter's books. Be forewarned.

This modern classic and New York Times best seller, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award, has been called the greatest war book ever written. Walking the hallucinatory line between reality and fiction, author Tim O'Brien captures the complex dynamics of the Vietnam War.

Listen for 30 minutes, and then just try to stop
Revisado: 06-29-05
This audiobook is so well written and so well read, that if you listen for 30 minutes, you'll wish you could just spend the rest of your day listening to it. Blood and guts? Definitely, as it IS about the Vietnam war. But the storytelling is so good that it will draw you in and you will just want to hear more.
To be honest, I have not yet finished it, so I cannot give you a complete plot line. But I am planning on putting my youngest to bed, sitting on the couch, and letting the storytelling take me away...

Surprising how much I enjoyed this book
Revisado: 06-28-05
This book was so enjoyable that I was sad when it ended. The narrators voice was perfect. The story was engaging. All during the story, despite the fact that I knew how it ended (the story let's you know the end at the beginning), I found myself constantly worrying about the main character. Amazing, so well written. Religious people will feel that it shows the power of God, non-religious people will feel that it shows the power of self-determination. To realize that it was a work of fiction says so much for the writers abilities.
