Historia
Henry V reigned over England for only nine years and four months and died at the age of just thirty-five, but he looms over the landscape of the late Middle Ages and beyond. The victor of Agincourt, he is remembered as the acme of kingship, a model to be closely imitated by his successors. William Shakespeare deployed Henry V as a study in youthful folly redirected to sober statesmanship. For one modern medievalist, Henry was, quite simply, “the greatest man who ever ruled England.”

Marvelous!
Revisado: 01-04-25
I have been fascinated by Henry V since first I learned of him in Year 5. This is an excellent biography of his life. Dan Jones has done it again.
Personally, I have always thought it to be a mistake to judge a medieval man by the standards of our times.
Henry V was a man who exemplified the perfect chivalric knight; a virtuous warrior, an educated and thoughtful leader, a commander whose personal standards allowed no grey areas. Henry V had command of himself; he was dutiful to his father, good to his brothers, and thoughtful of his wife (I love that he purchased two harps so that he and his young wife could play together)
No other king to my knowledge has led such an exemplary life.

Disappointed

Loved the forward where the author explained her own reasons for writing about a blind man.
Did not love the number of overused tropes she used.

Historia
In the world of Warbreaker, each person is born endowed with the power of one Breath―which can be sold and collected by others, then used to Awaken objects and even corpses to do their bidding. A few individuals who die in glory return as gods, with the power of thousands of Breath, but no memory of their mortal lives―and are enthroned in the Court of Gods in Hallandren’s capital. To Vivenna and Siri, princesses of Idris, the abuse of Breath and the claim of the Returned to be gods are repugnant blasphemy.

Historia
Reverend Augustus Shackleford's mission in life (aside from ensuring the collection box was suitably full every Sunday) was to secure advantageous marriages for each of his eight daughters. A tall order, given the fact that in the Reverend's opinion they didn't possess a single ladylike bone in the eight bodies they had between them. Quite where he would find a wealthy titled gentleman bottle headed enough to take any of them on remained a mystery and indeed was likely to test even his legendary resourcefulness.

Horrible, Ridiculous Narration by Male Narrator
Revisado: 07-01-24
I’m sure this could have been a good listen. The title details were promising, but the male narrator of so many of the voices was so grating I couldn’t make it through chapter one. I’d rather read the book.

Not Georgette Heyer’s typical quality.
Revisado: 04-30-24
I love Heyer’s novels, but The Talisman Ring is the first of her novels I felt had silly under developed characters (particularly the two female roles) and an underwhelming plot. I hope this is the only one like this.

I had no idea a vampire novel could be so philosophical and profound. I had heard this was the best ‘vampire’ novel ever written, and I have to agree with the sentiment.

Historia
Sixteen hundred years ago Britain left the Roman Empire and swiftly fell into ruin. Grand cities and luxurious villas were deserted and left to crumble, and civil society collapsed into chaos. Into this violent and unstable world came foreign invaders from across the sea, and established themselves as its new masters. The Anglo-Saxons traces the turbulent history of these people across the next six centuries. It explains how their earliest rulers fought relentlessly against each other for glory and supremacy, and then were almost destroyed by the onslaught of the vikings.

A Really Good Read
Revisado: 03-22-24
I have loved the Ian Rutledge and Bess Crawford series, so I assumed I would like The Murder Stone. I’m glad I took the chance. This book felt like a Victorian Gothic, a very different genre for Charles Todd and by no means my favorite genre. However, the story caught me and held me. I’m still hoping to read more Ian Rutledge and Bess Crawford mysteries, neither series feels finished.

I love Dorothy Dunnett. I have read and reread the Lymond Chronicles and House of Niccolo many times. It was a new experience to listen. They did a great job. This is for me the most difficult book in the House of Niccolo series.
