Historia
Raised in the wilderness by her late great-uncle, Vida is a young woman with an almost preternatural affinity for nature, especially for the wolves that also call the forested mountains home. Formed by hard experience, by love and loss, and by the prophecies of a fortuneteller, Vida just wants peace. If only nearby Kettleton County didn’t cast such a dark shadow.

not a horror novel
Revisado: 03-13-25
much like the lasting Koons book I listen to that was instantly read by the same person, this book is much more Thriller than horror. it was very good but I just do not see how it was a horrible. very good storytelling and a good ending, but without any real horror and just a bit of dread.

Historia
Over two grim nights in Los Angeles, the young followers of Charles Manson murdered seven people, including the actress Sharon Tate, then eight months pregnant. With no mercy and seemingly no motive, the Manson Family followed their leader's every order. Twenty years ago, when journalist Tom O'Neill was reporting a magazine piece about the murders, he worried there was nothing new to say. Then he unearthed shocking evidence of a cover-up behind the "official" story, including police carelessness, legal misconduct, and potential surveillance by intelligence agents.

All it takes for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing.
Revisado: 11-29-24
This was the longest slog of a book. More than you would ever want to know about Charles manson bungled Police investigations, the fact that Charles Manson was let go Time After Time After Time to commit rape murder and absolute chaos in California, and yet with no reasoning behind it. The Sheriff's Office had him caught, had him in custody, SO many times before the Sharon Tate murders. And yet, every time they let him go. And the reasons are still unknown.
The man who penned Helter Skelter was a monster. He was a woman beater, blow hard of the highest order and a bully who threatened everyone around him in order to protect his secrets and get his way. Helter Skelter should be taken with a grain of salt because of all of this because the man who wrote it was simply evil to the core.
Polanski was a predator and a rapist long before Tate was ever murdered. He raped and exploited her and filmed a lot of it. It seems that the few people who were decent in this novel kept their mouths shut while the rest of the people just rained Terror on everyone around them for decades. because they were allowed to. because good people did nothing.

Historia
In this deeply scary and intensely unnerving debut novel, Jake and a woman known only as "The Girlfriend" are on a drive to visit his parents at their secluded farm. But when Jake leaves "The Girlfriend" stranded at an abandoned high school, what follows is a twisted unraveling of the darkest unease, an exploration into psychological frailty, and an ending as suspenseful as The Usual Suspects and as haunting as Misery.

extremely cerebral and existential horror. it is expertly narrated by voice actor that sounds a lot like the actress from the movie.
if you understand the novel, the ending will be crushing.

Historia
At the dawn of the 20th century, a great confidence suffused America. Isaac Cline was one of the era's new men, a scientist who believed he knew all there was to know about the motion of clouds and the behavior of storms. The idea that a hurricane could damage the city of Galveston, Texas, where he was based, was to him preposterous, "an absurd delusion." It was 1900, a year when America felt bigger and stronger than ever before. Nothing in nature could hobble the gleaming city of Galveston, then a magical place that seemed destined to become the New York of the Gulf.

Every day without fail, Travis Devine puts on a cheap suit, grabs his faux-leather briefcase, and boards the 6:20 commuter train to Manhattan, where he works as an entry-level analyst at the city’s most prestigious investment firm. In the mornings, he gazes out the train window at the lavish homes of the uberwealthy, dreaming about joining their ranks. In the evenings, he listens to the fiscal news on his phone, already preparing for the next grueling day in the cutthroat realm of finance. Then one morning Devine’s tedious routine is shattered by an anonymous email: She is dead.

In retreat from a devastating loss and crushing injustice, Katie lives alone in a fortresslike stone house on Jacob’s Ladder island. Once a rising star in the art world, she finds refuge in her painting. The neighboring island of Ringrock houses a secret: a government research facility. And now two agents have arrived on Jacob’s Ladder in search of someone—or something—they refuse to identify. Historia
Somewhere in North Dakota, there is a town called Owl that isn't there. Disco is over, but punk never happened. They don't have cable. They don't really have pop culture, unless you count grain prices and alcoholism. People work hard and then they die. They hate the government and impregnate teenage girls. But that's not nearly as awful as it sounds; in fact, sometimes it's perfect.

ANIMAL TORTURE/ DEATH
Revisado: 06-18-24
Uncle Fred probably five or six other novels by this man. all of his music novels are really great. I never heard this one and it's been out for a while so I thought I would check it out. however the explicit description of a cat being tortured to death for absolutely no reason at all right in the middle of the book ruined everything for me. if you are an animal lover do not read this book
