Historia
Over her decades as a clinical psychologist, Dr. Mona Delahooke has routinely counseled distraught parents who struggle to manage their children’s challenging, sometimes oppositional behaviors. These families are understandably focused on correcting or improving a child’s lack of compliance, emotional outbursts, tantrums, and other “out of control” behavior. But, as she has shared with these families, a perspective shift is needed. Behavior, no matter how challenging, is not the problem but a symptom; a clue about what is happening in a child’s unique physiologic makeup.

Explains the reasons for positive parenting
Revisado: 10-21-22
I’ve read probably a dozen books on positive parenting. They’ve all had pros and cons, and have led me to parent our fiery child in a more gentle and loving approach than I was raised in. But nothing really stuck. This book, however, seems to resonate the best with the strategies we need for our extremely smart, active, and strong-willed child. I understand now after reading this book why the strategies I was trying to help our child learn to manage her own emotions haven’t been working. I know now that I need to ensure that her body is regulated and work from a body up approach before trying to help her problem-solve or manage her emotions. This book also takes into account the status of a parents, body, which is something that I found lacking in any other parenting books. I’m excited to see where this will take us and our child.
As a classroom teacher, I would love to see the author write a book based in using these strategies in the classroom. There seems to not be time to implement most of these strategies on a daily basis with many children, so I would like to see what her recommendations are for that.

Good strategy with one thing missing
Revisado: 09-28-22
I enjoyed listening to this book. The classroom management plan he lays out is doable and the techniques for teachers to control their own selves seem important but not often thought of.
My only question after reading is how to handle students who become aggressive, continue the misbehavior in timeout or push back really badly when you ask them to do timeout.
Overall a good book though.

Pretty adult
Revisado: 04-20-22
This was my first Murakami novel, so I don’t know if the others are like this, but there was a lot of very descriptive sex. It was a beautiful memoir of love and loss in many places, so I didn’t dislike it. It took at least 2 chapters to get used to the narrator’s voice. But overall it was good. Just don’t listen to it around your kids.

Use your head. That’s what we tell ourselves when facing a tricky problem or a difficult project. But a growing body of research indicates that we’ve got it exactly backwards. What we need to do, says acclaimed science writer Annie Murphy Paul, is think outside the brain. A host of “extra-neural” resources - the feelings and movements of our bodies, the physical spaces in which we learn and work, and the minds of those around us - can help us focus more intently, comprehend more deeply, and create more imaginatively.

Every teacher and boss should read this
Revisado: 03-25-22
I was an excellent student. I got straight a’s, took AP classes and worked my self half to death, glued to and regularly falling asleep at the desk in my room. When I got out of college, I realized that I didn’t know how to live life in the real world, having no knowledge of what life outside the classroom was really like- how to focus on actual interesting things, how to collaborate, how to motivate myself when I won’t get a grade on my achievements etc. I also miserably failed at my first year as a teacher in a poor, rural, school district, teaching kids that I thought could only be motivated to learn like I had learned. I gave up classroom teaching after that year, and have been searching for answers to why it was so hard and how I can be better when I ever do get back in the classroom.
This book presents many of the answers I needed. I’ve read dozens of other books on parenting, relationships, life and body science, and they have (mostly) all melded with the science and information presented in this book, of thinking differently about thinking, and how it will help you think more clearly. But this book distills the information in ways that are easy to remember. I can now list 10 or more ways I would drastically change the structure of my own classroom to help students get the most out of their time, build relationships, and build skills to advance in the real world. I love that the book explores the concept of intelligence not being something fixed that we are born with, but something that can be taught and molded and learned through the use of our environments, bodies, and relationships. The information is applicable to anyone who will ever work alone, and anyone who will ever work with another. It is well worth the hours of listening.

Fun, fantastical and gripping
Revisado: 03-03-22
This was a wonderful book for anyone who enjoys fantasy and mythology and old stories. I could never guess what was going to happen next, and loved hearing all of the character’s storylines merging. The narrator does an excellent job using different voices for each character. But be warned- the story changes viewpoints rather quickly at times. Excellent

I loved learning about the Taynixes and all of the relationships surrounding them. And the narrators’ voice for them cracks me up every time. The character relationships are always fun and touching, and I can’t wait for the next novella.

Historia
Based on the latest research on brain development and extensive clinical experience with parents, Dr. Laura Markham's approach is as simple as it is effective. Her message: Fostering emotional connection with your child creates real and lasting change. When you have that vital connection, you don't need to threaten, nag, plead, bribe - or even punish. This remarkable guide will help parents better understand their own emotions - and get them in check - so they can parent with healthy limits, empathy, and clear communication.

Very good summary of positive parenting
Revisado: 09-21-21
Overall I really enjoyed this book. I’ve read probably 10 books about positive (punishment-and-reward-free) parenting and this one is in the top 3 or 4. (2 other great ones are “Hunt, Gather, Parent” and “How to talk so little kids will listen”.)
Cons: Some parts of the narration were too sing-songy for my taste. Even though I am working hard to be more calm with my toddler, the voice in which some of these parts were presented seemed unrealistically sweet and musical. I do think it’s possible to be calm and coach rather than control, as the book suggests in many places. I just can’t bring myself to use a baby voice to do it.
Nonetheless, I feel that I hit a significant turning point with our 3-year old and bedtime after reading the quality time suggestions in this book. Once I started showering her in tickles and kisses at bedtime (which she likes- obviously don’t do that if your kid doesn’t like it), she’s finally stopped coming out of her room just for the sake of it. Many points in this book have been presented in a new light that helped me understand their value and implement them into our life.
Overall, very good.

Darker, but still very good
Revisado: 08-13-21
Iron Gold felt a lot darker than the original trilogy of Red rising books. It was more political, and thus a bit more confusing. That being said, I didn’t mind the 4 narrators because I felt like it helped me keep track of who was speaking more easily. I thought they all performed well - but, I have listened to several “Stormlight archive” books by Brandon Sanderson, and those are all narrated by a woman and man narrator. So this really didn’t feel much different. It was well-written and gripping throughout.
