As always, the inconsistencies drive me bananas. In the first book of the collection, Ms Kappes rewrote another character’s history, now making Hank a former FBI agent. It would be so easy to keep track of details like that, but the author doesn’t bother.

And yet, I return to the series because I like the characters. I tried some of her other works, but found them wanting. These are nice to listen to while I do other things because a good portion of them consists of repetition (which is why I notice the inconsistencies). You don’t have to pay close attention. Sometimes she even surprises you with the perp (but not often).

Fun and brainless

These are easy to listen to as background noise; at least a quarter is repetition from previous books, often vastly inconsistent from one book to the next, another quarter cut and paste actions, descriptions, and dialogue. The rest is predictable conflict and hijinks. Spoiler: Mae is dumb as a post while believing she’s intelligent; and although she thinks she solves murders, she NEVER solves them. She gets stuck in a theory of the case and is then proven wrong at peril to her life, fortunately saved at the last minute by Hank.

Fun but inconsistent

The author (if it’s not AI written, a distinct possibility) doesn’t seem to keep notes about characters or actions to maintain continuity from book to book. In the Christmas book, Dawn is a pastry chef; in the following book she’s learning to bake from Mary Elizabeth. That’s just one. An exhaustive list would be tedious to post much less read.

The stories are fun and sweet but predictable.

Stilted

It feels like a schlocky 1940s movie. The dialogue is stilted. I guess I was not expecting a bad romance novel.

Superb

A fan of the Harry Hole series, I already knew that Jo Nesbø was talented. This collection of short works, however, casts the depth and breadth of said talent in bas relief. Unbound by the confines of Hole’s world, Nesbø incorporates speculative fiction to explore the nature of the soul, of society, and if human resilience. If you’re expecting Harry Hole vignettes, don’t bother with this collection. But if you want to be taken out of yourself and dazzled, this collection is for you.

Cruddy narrator

Fun story, well-written

Interlacing the experiences of a motley crew of characters and giving us insight into their perceptions without overt judgment, this tale yanks the reader on like an accomplice in the shotgun seat with a joyriding teen: maddening yet jolly good fun.
