Great Podcast!
Revisado: 09-10-23
I've just started listening to Brian Keating's podcasts and I know I'm going to binge them. So entertaining, and so thought provoking, and so clear. I hesitated to listen to the September 6 with Steven Koonin since I thought, no way am I going to spend time with a climate change denier. I'm glad I trusted Brian though and gave him a chance. The podcast may not have changed my mind but the time spent hearing the science, the statistical model, and Brian's careful and respectful presentation was a total pleasure. Very highly recommended!

Historia
Thousands of years ago Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius wrote these meditations as a guide for his own self-improvement, and they're still relevant today. Bedtime stories are narrated by the world’s most celebrated voices and written with no beginning, middle, or end so you don’t stay up to hear what happens next. They're interesting enough to give your mind something to focus on, but delivered in a way that encourages sleep.

Historia
In the middle of the night, a woman wakes to find her beloved city engulfed in flames. Ten seemingly endless years of conflict between the Greeks and the Trojans are over. Troy has fallen. From the Trojan women whose fates now lie in the hands of the Greeks, to the Amazon princess who fought Achilles on their behalf, to Penelope awaiting the return of Odysseus, to the three goddesses whose feud started it all, these are the stories of the women whose lives, loves, and rivalries were forever altered by this long and tragic war.

Exceptional
Revisado: 11-03-21
The story and narration are just stunning. I'm familiar with the mythology, most of it very depressing for the female characters, and the storyline does not vary. If you're prepared for that, you'll be blown away by what the author does with it. The writing is beautiful. The deep dives into the characters and the details about the situations are powerful and overwhelming and haunting.. Highly recommended.

When he opened the FBI investigation into Russia’s election interference, Peter Strzok had already spent more than two decades defending the United States against foreign threats. His career in counterintelligence ended shortly thereafter, when the Trump administration used his private expression of political opinions to force him out of the Bureau in August 2018. But by that time, Strzok had seen more than enough to convince him that the commander in chief had fallen under the sway of America’s adversary in the Kremlin.

Historia
It has been 13 years since the Fourth Crusade captured Constantinople. Father Michael has spent those years exterminating the supernatural creatures that once infested the city. Shortly after returning home to Provence, he stumbles upon a nest of vampires, creatures his order believed they had driven from Europe. Alone and cut off from his brother hunters, he turns to Enik, an aging knight tormented by guilt over his actions in the Crusade.

Absolutely Loved This
Revisado: 03-26-21
I've read-listened to the other works by this extremely talented author and narrative, and all of them are unique and fascinating. He is one of the authors I reread and discover turns of phrases I didn't fully appreciate the first time around. Jerry's narrative performance is as compelling as his writing. Bottom-line - his work is wonderful. Give yourself an enormous present and go find and listen to more.

Historia
Tembreabrezi is like Eden - a beginning place. There, Hugh and Irena assume they have merely discovered an escape from the dull monotony, even the terrors of their regular lives. But Tembreabrezi has a secret, a dark fear that is threatening the very life-blood of the kingdom. Hugh and Irena were led there for a purpose, selected for an impossibly hopeless mission. If they accept the challenge, they may lose everything - their new-found paradise, and possibly their lives.

Really needed an editor and some clear point
Revisado: 03-09-21
When I read this in 1979 I loved it (the magic I guess). I just reread it through audible and now have a completely different opinion. It's so seriously flawed that I can't understand why she wrote it except to publish something for some reason. The characters stumble on a magic town but have no curiosity about it. They have serious flaws and engage in unbelievable behavior. REALLY unbelievable behavior. Laughable and ridiculous. At least half the book is spent describing scenery. The big moment is rapidly discarded for more descriptions of scenery. Maybe she could have written it as a short story, limited the scenery to a few shrubs and some trees and included it in one of her collections. Maybe. I'm still a huge fan. Her prose and creativity are wonderful even when they're buried under the scenery. The narration was wonderful! Three stars because of the quality of the narration. Two stars because her prose is beautiful.

When celebrated writer Joan Didion’s life was altered forever, she wrote a new chapter. In this adaptation of her iconic memoir, Didion transforms the story of the shattering loss of her husband and their daughter into a one-woman play performed by Tony Award winner Vanessa Redgrave, who originated the role on Broadway in 2007.

Beautifully Performed, Very Sad
Revisado: 10-29-20
One of those pieces I will never reread, not because it is badly written - it's definitely not - but the sorrow and desperate denial are so hard to bear. I'd suggest reading this in a time of safe reflection or something, not when you are overwhelmed with anxiety and fear of your own. Vanessa Redgrave is amazing. I can't imagine anyone else doing what she does with this.

Language defines us as a species, placing humans head and shoulders above even the most proficient animal communicators. But it also beguiles us with its endless mysteries, allowing us to ponder why different languages emerged, why there isn't simply a single language, how languages change over time and whether that's good or bad, and how languages die out and become extinct.

Science fiction allows us to go places we can only dream of seeing - other worlds, distant stars, entirely different galaxies. While not every story is concerned with the hard science behind space travel and other futuristic ventures, fiction can give us amazing insight into what we could be capable of and what we dream of doing. In these 10 lectures, Professor Erin Macdonald interweaves real science and the achievements of the imagination to reveal the truth that underlies our favorite stories and sheds light on what the future may hold.

This was really a pleasure to listen to. A thorough, clear, and entertaining trip past all my favorite sci-fi books and shows with clever ways to explain difficult, complex physics. Erin McDonald is a wonderful narrator too. I highly recommend the course.

Story is good, not her best. Performance is great!
Revisado: 05-15-20
I read this book many years ago and remembered that I didn't like it as much as others written by LeGuin. I'm still of the same opinion. Her prose is wonderful, her world and ideas fascinating, but the story is repetitive. She sets up and hammers down almost identical events until the situation in the book becomes unbelievable. I'd recommend listening to her other works instead. That said, George Guidall's performance was outstanding. I'll be looking for other works he narrates.
