Story about divorce

I am quite perturbed that this book was described as a heartwarming Christmas story about a boy and his toy pig. It may be that as well, but the overarching theme is divorce from a child’s perspective. I started listening to this with my 5-year-old son who has no notion of the concept that “Mommy doesn’t love Daddy anymore” or playing games with Mommy’s new boyfriend and wishing it was his Dad instead. It’s a nice story for kids who need a story to parallel their own circumstances, but it should be clearly stated in the description.

British accent that an American can understand!

The narrator’s performance is absolutely stellar! As an American, I most often find it difficult to listen to audiobooks with British narrators. However, Russel Tovey’s voice is so clear that it is easy to understand. Aside from clarity, he made the text really come alive truly acted out scenes. To be honest, the book seemed to drag on at certain points, particularly in the middle when the author describes the many, many items that Dorian collects from around the world. It was about an hour and a half of these descriptions. Good thing I was listening while on a long walk or I may not have been able to endure it. In any case, the story itself was interesting and thought-provoking. I enjoyed the ending very much. I had read a description of the book as being a “philosophical novel.” I would say it is no more philosophical than any other high quality work of literature, but there were very many one-liners that could be quoted. “She behaves as if she is beautiful. All American women do. It is the secret of their charm.” That is one of my favorites.

I love this set of stories! And the narrator has a very pleasant and clear voice.
