Historia
While St. Francis of Assisi is one of the most beloved saints in history, the relevancy of St. Francis for our times in light of the election of Pope Francis has yet to be explored. This book is written with the intention of filling that gap. While it is biographical in nature, it also freely explores themes that relate to St. Francis but are not a part of his life.

Dreadful
Revisado: 01-24-18
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
A super Catholic rant. So boxed in to orthodox theology it imprisons Francis's true spirit.
Would you ever listen to anything by Wyatt North again?
No
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of David Glass?
Steve Wes
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Saint Francis of Assisi: A Life Inspired?
All of it
Any additional comments?
A theological rant unworthy of Francis

Historia
Lust for Life is Irving Stone's biographical novel about the life of the Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh. Largely based on the letters Van Gogh wrote to his brother, Theo, the novel details the artist's difficult life, as well as describing the origins of many of his famous paintings, such as The Potato Eaters, Sunflowers, and others.

What made the experience of listening to Lust for Life the most enjoyable?
The reading was perhaps the best I've ever heard
Who was your favorite character and why?
Vincent of course
Have you listened to any of Steve West’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Not sure. But they definitely don't get much better
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
They did make a film. A lousy one.
Any additional comments?
it just doesn't get any better than this. Irving Stone is a genius equal to the task as is Steve West. Bravo !!!

Historia
The Life of Thomas More went straight to #1 on the London Times best seller list when published in the United Kingdom. It remained in that position for over a month, garnering the kind of praise that is rarely given. Thomas More was not only a great man of the church, he was also arguably the most brilliant lawyer the English-speaking world has ever known.

THE LIFE OF THOMAS MORE
Revisado: 12-06-16
Would you try another book from Peter Ackroyd and/or Frederick Davidson?
YES. IF IT WASN'T NARRATED BY DAVIDSON -- BEYOND DREADFUL
ACKROYD IS A BRILLIANT WRITER HOWEVER BUT HIS PROSE IS COMPLETELY TRASHED BY THIS READING.
What didn’t you like about Frederick Davidson’s performance?
WAY TO ARCH AND AFFECTED -- A COMPLETE TURN-OFF.
Could you see The Life of Thomas More being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
WELL PAUL SCHOFIELD ALREADY DID A BRILLIANT JOB. BUT I'D LOVE TO SEE ANOTHER FILM.
ANTHONY HOPKINS WOULD BE BRILLIANT

Historia
The profoundly inspiring and fully documented saga of Joan of Arc, the young peasant girl whose "voices" moved her to rally the French nation and a reluctant king against British invaders in 1428, has fascinated artistic figures as diverse as William Shakespeare, Mark Twain, Voltaire, George Bernard Shaw, Bertolt Brecht, Carl Dreyer, and Robert Bresson. Was she a divinely inspired saint? A schizophrenic? A demonically possessed heretic, as her persecutors and captors tried to prove?

JOAN OF ARC: A LIFE TRANSFIGURED
Revisado: 12-06-16
What disappointed you about Joan of Arc?
A huge mistake in packing so much of Joan's testimony into the narrative. It breaks up the story needlessly. It's nearly as irritating as Harrison's inability to pare down the historical backdrop. She keeps putting the brakes on the story to detail insignificance, show off all the research she's done.
Would you ever listen to anything by Kathryn Harrison again?
I loved her bio of St. Theresa -- so yes.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Pedantic as the rest of it. I felt like I was in a high school class.
What character would you cut from Joan of Arc?
The clerical inquisitors. Perhaps not cut but reserve all that burdensome back and forth until later
Any additional comments?
The book is so turgid I was unable to finish it.

Historia
At age 24 Winston Churchill was utterly convinced it was his destiny to become prime minister of England one day, despite the fact he had just lost his first election campaign for Parliament. He believed that to achieve his goal, he had to do something spectacular on the battlefield. Despite deliberately putting himself in extreme danger as a British army officer in colonial wars in India and Sudan and as a journalist covering a Cuban uprising against the Spanish, glory and fame had eluded him.

HERO OF THE EMPIRE
Revisado: 12-06-16
What did you love best about Hero of the Empire?
The story was riveting Millard weaves just enough back story and historical gems to keep it moving.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Hero of the Empire?
Churchill's lucking out after the escape and being taken in by a fellow Brit who helps him complete the escape
Have you listened to any of Simon Vance’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No -- but he's terrific. Perhaps the best narrator of any book of your's, I've listened to.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Cried when it was over. Wanted more
Any additional comments?
Simon Vance gets a standing ovation along with Millard.

THE WAY OF ST. JOHN
Revisado: 10-28-16
What would have made The Way of Saint John of the Cross better?
A DIFFERENT LESS PEDANTIC NARRATOR.
NARRATION IS A TRUE GIFT AND IT'S RARE THAT WRITER'S POSSESS IT.
Would you ever listen to anything by Susan Muto again?
NO
How did the narrator detract from the book?
BEYOND BORING, BEYOND DIDACTIC, BEYOND MY ABILITY TO LISTEN
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
YES. THE ORIGINAL ST. JOHN WRITINGS
Any additional comments?
MICHAEL KRAMER WHO NARRATES "THE DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL" IS A TERRIFIC NARRATOR AND WOULD HAVE SERVED THIS BOOK WELL.

Historia
In May 1996, three expeditions attempted to climb Mount Everest on the Southeast Ridge route pioneered by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953. Crowded conditions slowed their progress. Late in the day twenty-three men and women—including expedition leaders Scott Fischer and Rob Hall—were caught in a ferocious blizzard.

The Climb
Revisado: 10-03-16
What disappointed you about The Climb?
The narration was turgid and ponderous
What was most disappointing about Anatoli Boukreev’s story?
Same with the story. No sense of the remarkable battle he went through with the elements. The entire narritive is bogged down by incidentals and boring detail.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Richard Davidson?
Anyone !
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Yes. But only because I'm a climber and love the terrain.
