Superb storytelling; superb history
Revisado: 04-23-25
I am a professional historian who often speaks about Nellie Bly. This podcast is absolutely sparkling. The drama, wonder, and excitement of the race comes through the fabulous production.
But it isn’t just the story of the race. It’s the story of two real women, very different from one another and yet so vibrant. The podcast blends their story together chronologically in a way that adds to our understanding. Also to be praised is the fascinating introductions to each chapter that talk about the lives of women or a historical parallel.
As one who has studied this race, professionally, I am recommending this podcast to everyone who would love to know more. Bravo to the sensational, creator.

Delightful book – cleverly plotted, and well written
Revisado: 09-28-24
If you’ve read the basic information, you know something of the plot of the book. What you don’t know is how gracefully and cleverly the author makes it work. Beautiful narration, great structure, lovely characters.

Outstanding introduction to Lincoln
Revisado: 09-09-24
Dr. McPherson is one of the great names in the history of Lincoln scholarship. This superb, very short book does a masterful job of introducing the life of Abraham Lincoln to its audience.
McPherson masterfully pics the moments, interactions, and decisions of Lincoln that carry the reader along to a much better understanding of him.
Even for those of us who have read extensively on Lincoln, this is a terrific work. Excellent narration as well.

Historia
Michael Nesmith's eclectic, electric life spans his star-making role on The Monkees, his invention of the music video, and his critical contributions to movies, comedy, and the world of virtual reality. Above all, his is a seeker's story, a pilgrimage in search of a set of principles to live by. That search took Nesmith from a childhood in Dallas, where his single mother, Bette, invented Liquid Paper, to the set of The Monkees in Los Angeles, to the heart of swinging London with John Lennon and Jimi Hendrix, and to an unexpected oasis of brilliance in the Santa Fe desert.

Thoughtful, unexpected, fascinating
Revisado: 08-30-24
If you want to read about the formation and experience of the Monkees, this is the wrong book for you!
Michael Nesmith is a fascinating man who lived an unexpected life. A patent told her. A man of great contradiction, self reflection, with an inquiring Spirit and an endless appetite for growth.
There is very little about Mickey, Davey, and Peter. There’s no mention of his subsequent tours with them. Instead, Michael Nesmith narrates his life story that includes an accomplished, but somehow inexplicable mother, friendships with amazing creators, his work on developing virtual reality, music, videos, and so much more.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book. One of the most delightful parts of the book experience was Michael Nesmith reading. His voice is engaging, aging, and constantly draws you in.

Great for West Wing Fans
Revisado: 08-24-24
As a historian and a total West Wing buff, I enjoyed the book tremendously. However, some of the editing decisions were really questionable.
To that jump out at me are neglecting to mention a major character and actress from season one (Mandy/Moira Kelly) and, not examining one of the most influential and consequential episodes, where the West Wing addressed 911 through a fiction bombing story.
The latter was one of the first instances were a fictional TV show addressed 911 and the consequences. People were talking about it for years afterward.

Beautiful story, unforgettable characters!
Revisado: 06-06-24
Although The Irish Goodbye looks like a standard modern romance, it’s that and so much more! The setting, the Irish island of Inishmore, is as much a character as the fabulous Cordelia and Niall.
Beyond the cute, wonderfully funny, and definitely spicy narrative, there’s a depth to the stories that is unique for books of this type. It’s not just about the meet cute and happily ever after. It’s about unforgettable characters coming together amidst challenging back stories.
This has become one of my new favorite books. I’m recommending it to everyone! As a bonus, the two narrators do a superb job, which only adds to the enjoyment of The Irish Goodbye.

A mixed bag
Revisado: 03-02-24
The inconsistent historical timeline makes this otherwise very interesting and sad exposé difficult. The reporter twice mentions Ashley having a daughter, but otherwise, this important part of her life doesn’t seem to exist.
Her questions posed to interview subjects often missed the mark or failed to provide an adequate follow up.
Clearly, Vince McMahon is a horrible human being, and the WWE is a horrible organization. Better writing, and production would have made this book worthy of Ashley.

Good history with a conservative slant
Revisado: 11-17-23
As an overview to each of the presidents, this is a good starter. However, particularly in the mid to late 20th century articles, it takes decidedly conservative view of the presidents and some of the conclusions, regarding Reagan and Nixon, especially, are pretty speculative and dubious. The laudatory analysis of George HW Bush was a head scratcher to anyone who remembered his presidency.
