How Could a Woman Write This?
Revisado: 07-30-24
If you want a book with a weak main character who continually makes stupid decisions, acquiesces to whatever her husband decides, and then solves it all by bearing his child after burying him (not a spoiler - she buries him in the opening chapter), then this is the book for you.
It is touted as a page-turner and thrilling mystery. It takes 4 hours of listening to get to the mystery, and then many more hours listening to the main character belabor what to do.
Save yourself the hours and listen to something that is written better.

Historia
Lydia Quixano Pérez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable. When Lydia’s husband’s tell-all profile of Javier, the jefe of the newest drug cartel that has gruesomely taken over the city, is published, none of their lives will ever be the same.

Such an important read!
Revisado: 05-15-24
Amazing character development makes you feel you know these people - I rooted for them, I wept for them, I was furious on their behalf. Even the minor characters are so human I couldn’t help but become curious about what would happen.
As a white American, I knew the journey of migrant was challenging and long. But this shows just how arduous and heart-wrenching it is, and how much strength and determination it takes to get to El Norte.
This is a novel that will stay with you long after you finish it, and I actually find myself missing Lydia, Luca, Soledad, Rebeca, and wishing I could meet them to say, “Welcome. I’m so glad you’re here.”

The Real Deal
Revisado: 05-04-24
As a rural NH teacher of 30 years, I can say this is the truth of life for young people whose families have worked and owned the land for hundreds of years, and are now struggling to make ends meet. Ian’s voice is authentic, honest, and beautiful in his musings on life, what matters, and the many things that shouldn’t matter. Beautifully written, each character is developed well, the whole story is based in the stark reality of what growing up as “rural poor” means in America today.
You will laugh, you’ll likely cry, and you will shake your head at the wisdom on these pages. But you definitely won’t be disappointed.

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

The narration is a train wreck
Revisado: 04-15-24
This was originally an abridged version with many awesome voice actors. Then Audible turned it into a full length version and got a new narrator to “read in” the rest of the novel.
The result is a clusterf**k with three caharcters’ voices changing sometimes mid-scene. Very confusing and jarring to listen to!
Thankfully, the story is incredible, which makes it just bearable to deal with the voice changes.
Audible, do better!

Historia
In a small town, everyone thinks they know you: Charlie is a hardcore rocker who’s not as tough as he looks. Hammer is a footy jock with big AFL dreams and an even bigger ego. Zeke is a shy over-achiever, never macho enough for his family. But all three boys hide who they really are. When the truth is revealed, will it set them free or blow them apart?

So Authentic and Real
Revisado: 03-09-24
Holden Sheppard captures the unique voice of each boy in a nuanced and expert way. You see their flaws, dreams, fears, and humanity in stark relief as the story unfolds.
Each boy shows a different way of dealing (or trying not to deal) with being gay in a small- town society that still hasn’t fully embraced the fact that gay people deserve support, love, and compassion like any other human.
At times, I belly-laughed, at times I wept, but I couldn’t stop reading.
If you are LGBTQ+, if you know someone who is and you want to be a better ally, or if you just want to UNDERSTAND, read this novel. Beautiful, tragic, uplifting - all within the skilled writing.

Historia
Paul Bäumer is just 19 years old when he and his classmates enlist. They are Germany’s Iron Youth who enter the war with high ideals and leave it disillusioned or dead. As Paul struggles with the realities of the man he has become, and the world to which he must return, he is led like a ghost of his former self into the war’s final hours. All Quiet is one of the greatest war novels of all time, an eloquent expression of the futility, hopelessness and irreparable losses of war.

Historia
One of the 20th century's enduring works, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a widely beloved and acclaimed novel known throughout the world and the ultimate achievement in a Nobel Prize-winning career. The novel tells the story of the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendía family. Rich and brilliant, it is a chronicle of life, death, and the tragicomedy of humankind. In the beautiful, ridiculous, and tawdry story of the Buendía family, one sees all of humanity, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo, one sees all of Latin America.

Confusing af
Revisado: 02-10-24
I’m a high school English teacher and an avid reader, but I found 100 Years to be incredibly confusing to follow.
Too many characters have the same name, or very similar. And the narrative skips around from the present to the past to predictions of the future. The story is also mostly told through the memories of its characters - meaning what they remember might not be what really happened.
I know this is supposed to be kind of a mystical parable, but I found it exhausting to try to follow. I had to keep going back and re-listening to understand what was happening.
Reading is a pastime to enjoy. This novel was just too much work.

Wonderful character development
Revisado: 09-16-23
This is an amazing story, and it’s a beautiful sequel to clan of the cave bears. Ayla is a powerful young woman, so it’s easy to become invested in the tale the author weaves. There are several very sexually explicit scenes, but I believe they are tastefully described, and add a lot to the story. It is best to read the first book of the series before this, though this can be a standalone book, too.

Historia
Toby Maytree first sees Lou Bigelow on her bicycle in postwar Provincetown, Massachusetts. Her laughter and loveliness catch his breath. Maytree is a Provincetown native, an educated poet of thirty. As he courts Lou, just out of college, her stillness draws him. In spare, elegant prose, Dillard traces the Maytrees' decades of loving and longing as they live cheaply among the nonconformist artists and writers that the bare tip of Cape Cod attracts.

Lovely, but Not a page turner.
Revisado: 06-12-23
I kept waiting for something to happen in this story. An hour into it, I realized it isn’t that kind of story. It’s just the characters living their lives. The descriptions of life at the tip of Cape Cod are beautiful, and I found myself liking the characters as one likes broken in shoes - familiar and comfortable. If you want an exciting tale, look elsewhere. But if you want to reflect on a lifetime of love, caring, and companionship, this is for you.

Read by the author!
Revisado: 03-30-22
The characters are well developed, the story is oddly believable, and it is very unique. I thoroughly enjoyed it and didn’t want it to end! There is room for a sequel, but perhaps that’s just wishful thinking on my part. This would be worth reading in print, but I think it’s even better to have the author read it to me the way he wanted it to sound.
