I know it's not for everyone, as evidenced by the mixed reviews, but I would urge everyone to give it a chance and come to your own conclusion. It has so much depth and meaning to it, and great moments of interpersonal struggles, some may enjoy uncovering patterns and meaning where others get bogged down. There're a lot of difference in personal preference in the reviews, but overall I think the author did a lot right, even if there were several critiques I would agree with.

I mightve been able to get through it since the story seemed somewhat ok, but together with the squeaky adolescent sounding narrator, it has a decidedly YA feel to it. I just can't do young adult novels. It has decent world building, but without giving me a reason to care about the character and without building an intriguing mystery or plot within the first few chapters, I just couldnt bring myself to complete it.

I REALLY love this book. It has a similar message that I've read in other books that discuss systemic racism within the criminal justice system, but rather than discussing statistics/history, it gives us the same understanding by way of an incredibly compelling story of the author’s life, the lives of her clients, and her efforts to reduce their extreme sentences. Not only did I gain a greater appreciation of the human lives behind the statistics, but the author gives us her perspective as an attorney, giving us detail that helps us understand what the exact challenges are in the legal system and makes the issues easy to understand. She accomplishes this while making the story so riveting, that I lost hours of sleep because I didn’t want to stop listening!

So there's absolutely no indication of it in the details, but this is both volume 1 and volume 2 so don't make the same mistake I did and buy volume 2 separately, because, unfortunately, volume 2 is only volume 2 lol. Seriously, go to the details page of Volume 2 and review the stories and you will see that those are the stories that are played during "Chapter 2" in this Audiobook and all of the Volume 1 stories listed in the details here are played in Chapter 1.

Both my kids and I were very engaged throughout the story and loved it. I especially liked how the narration kept pace with the music.

My kid (4) is and was excited about the idea of the book since he loves Ninjago, but he doesn’t get much out of it. It’s like listening to the audio from a tv show rather than an actual book and especially since it starts out with a lot of action, it’s a bit hard to follow. My 6 year doesn’t pay attention to it either, and he does normally have the attention span for longer books when they are at his level and in a more typical book format.

I am so happy that my recently turned 6 boy actually listened to a book longer than 10 minutes! He was enraptured by it! I enjoyed listening to the story with him, but not so much the narration. Her portrayal of Benny was weirdly gravelly and screechy and just in general her loud sharp voice gave me a bit of a headache if I didn’t keep the sound down ( I had to fight with the kids over that... ). But still, I would recommend it for young children, they certainly didn’t mind the narration and thankfully some of the other books in the series have a different narrator, so I will definitely be buying more.

I can't believe I had never heard of James Baldwin prior to picking up this book for my work's Black History Month challenge. His writing is beautiful and embodies a clarity, wisdom and sensitivity that I found absolutely admirable. The book begins with a letter to his nephew, which gives the reader a glimpse into the effects of slavery and discrimination 100 years after emancipation by describing the innermost feelings, thoughts, and fears that black people were experiencing and provides words of encouragement to his nephew. The main part of the novel is called “Down At The Cross” and describes the forces that led to the popularity of the Nation of Islam, which he doesn’t agree with, but understands the motivations. I didn't know anything about the Nation of Islam prior to this book, and I think this was a great introduction to it, for him to describe its ideology with sensitivity and understanding, while refusing to agree with its condemnation of another race. There are a lot of other points he makes in the book, certainly different people will have different points that particularly resonate and inform them. It is a very thought-provoking read that I highly recommend.

A couple of my favorite quotes:

In letter to nephew “…please remember that what they believe as well as what they do and cause you to endure does not testify to your inferiority, but to their inhumanity.”

“Color is not a human or personal reality. It is a political reality.”

I bought this on a whim and was surprised when it ended up being my 5 year old boy’s favorite audiobook!
