The fight scene was not believable. The breaks in time didn't make sense and the fact that a man who isn't drugged couldn't catch her didn't ring true.

I enjoyed learning about Lady Death and the horrible toll of the Eastern front. I've read many books about WWII but this is the first told from the Russian point of view. Since the Cold War, Americans have been indoctrinated to think of Russia as the enemy. It was nice to read a more human story about their struggles during the war.

Too contrived and attempt at tear jerker. The last plot was contrived and annoying.

I'm sure many people thought about who was dying during the pandemic, but we're afraid to voice any opinions. Penny has laid bare the most callous of these thoughts in the Professor Robinson character. I appreciated the complex discussion if freedom of speech. As Americans have lived through so much abhorrent speech and social media companies are having to grapple with the messy line between protecting free speech but putting down hate speech. I also felt the novel makes a nod to the inordinate "Madness of Crowds" we are living through. Between huge numbers of people refusing to get the COVID-19 vaccine (despite the fact the fact they are all alive and well today because they received the polio, mumps, measles, and rubella vaccines when they were children), the people who have a loved one die of COVID and then claim they thought it was a hoax or "it was all political," people taking Ivermectin, a wormer I administer to my horse, but they won't take a vaccine made for humans to save their lives, to the January 6th insurrection at the capital which some GOP members describe as "a tourist visit," to governor's banning businesses from requiring the vaccine or even face masks. I realize there have some some ludicrous thoughts and events in world history. But this is the 21st century, not the Dark Ages. How can people still believe such nonsense? I think the "Madness of Crowds" describes all of this, this sad, sad situation very well. Touche' Louise Penny.

It is hard to believe that this family endured all of this illness, trauma, and hardship and still stayed together. But with incredible determination and perseverance, they did. It is a real testament to what a person and a family can survive. An amazing story.

The mystery was subtle and interesting and very current -Corporate greed and cover ups. It was a bit unbelievable that Stephen survived but I could see how that was important to the ending. I love how Daniel's misunderstanding was handled. Family misunderstanding can fester for years. I liked how it ended.

I sympathize with Astride. It's often hard to know the right thing to say to one's kids. You want them to be happy but it isn't clear how to help.

I thought this must be the author's first novel because the dialogue is so stillted. The author uses "he said/she said" way too much. The reader can tell who is speaking from context. Also, I found the main character, Mackenzie/Mick, very annoying. She is supposedly smart and observant. But I found her frustratingly slow and dense. The narrator added to this impression with her slow monotone.

I like the ending - unexpected. But very keeping with Gamache and Isabelle Lacoste. They aren't power hungry.

Good story. I like the Maisie Dobbs series. There were times when the narrator's voice would suddenly change and it didn't sound like Maisie.
